Consequences of a ligament injury on neuromuscular function and relevance to rehabilitation - using the anterior cruciate ligament-injured knee as model.

The purpose of this article is to survey current knowledge concerning the consequences of a ligament injury on neuromuscular function and its relevance to rehabilitation, in relation to clinical practice. Although it deals with the ACL-injured knee, these views may also apply to other joints. The effects of a ligament injury on neuromuscular function are first considered - i.e., proprioception, po

Cross-relaxation between macromolecular and solvent spins: the role of long-range dipole couplings.

Nuclear spin relaxation by intermolecular dipole–dipole interactions between macromolecular and solvent nuclear moments forms the basis of a widely used method for investigating macromolecular solvation. In particular, intermolecular cross-relaxation [or nuclear Overhauser effect (NOE)] between protein and water protons has been used to probe the mobility of water molecules interacting with the pr

Identification of an amino acid residue in the PKC C1b domain crucial for its localisation to the Golgi network.

Protein kinase C (PKC) isoforms have been reported to be targeted to the Golgi complex via their C1 domains. We have shown recently that the regulatory domain of PKCtheta induces apoptosis in neuroblastoma cells and that this effect is correlated to Golgi localization via the C1b domain. This study was designed to identify specific residues in the C1 domains that mediate Golgi localization. We dem

Slepian models for chi²-processes with dependent components with application to envelope upcrossings

A Slepian model for the local behaviour near the level upcrossings of a chi²-process with dependent Gaussian components is presented. In case of independent components, this model is shown to take on a rather simple form, thereby simplifying earlier results by Aronowich and Adler. The Slepian model is applied to the envelope of a stationary Gaussian process and used to approximate the probabilit

Null Referential Subjects in Övdalian

In this article, Övdalian null subjects are introduced and analysed. A general background to Övdalian is provided, whereupon the possible null subjects (wįð ('we') and ið ('you')) are presented. Interestingly, these null subjects do not appear in the same syntactic positions; whereas null ið seems to be unrestricted, null wįð may only appear in positions immediately preceding the finite verb. It i

First-Degree AV Block-An Entirely Benign Finding or a Potentially Curable Cause of Cardiac Disease?

First-degree atrioventricular (AV) block is a delay within the AV conduction system and is defined as a prolongation of the PR interval beyond the upper limit of what is considered normal (generally 0.20 s). Up until recently, first-degree AV block was considered an entirely benign condition. In fact, some complain that it is a misnomer since there is only delay and no actual block in the AV condu

An electrophysiologist perspective on risk stratification in heart failure: can better understanding of the condition of the cardiac sympathetic nervous system help?

Heart failure is often complicated by arrhythmias that can adversely affect the quality of life and increase the risk for sudden cardiac death. Current risk stratification strategies for sudden cardiac death in the heart failure patient are not ideal, with much potential for further refinement. Overactivation of the sympathetic nervous system has been shown to be associated with worsening heart fa

Apolipoprotein B, the villain in the drama?

Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) is the major atherogenic lipoprotein and the primary target of lipid-lowering therapy for treating ischemic cardiovascular disease. Apolipoprotein B (apoB), an important structural component of LDL, plays a key role in cholesterol transport and removal in vascular wall. On the other hand, under pathological process, apoB interacts with the arterial wall to initiate th

Are homology models sufficiently good for free-energy simulations?

In this paper, I evaluate the usefulness of protein homology models in rigorous free-energy simulations to determine ligand affinities. Two templates were used to create models of the factor Xa protein and one template was used for dihydrofolate reductase from Plasmodium falciparum. Then, the relative free energies for several pairs of ligands were estimated using thermodynamic integration with th

A new process for well-head gas upgrading

As oil-prices and environmental concerns are increasing, it is of interest to better use the well-head gas. This light fraction co-produced with petroleum is generally flared and in this paper a method for upgrading and returning the co-product to the petroleum stream is suggested. The method is based on a conversion of the gas to synthesis gas and upgrading this synthesis gas into liquid hydrocar

An outbreak of furniture related dermatitis ('sofa dermatitis') in Finland and the UK: history and clinical cases

In February 2007, an epidemic of severe dermatitis from Chinese recliner chairs and sofas started to unfold first in Finland and a few months later in the UK. Some patients reacted in patch tests (PTs) strongly to the material of their furniture, either leather or fabric. There have been hundreds of reports of chair or sofa dermatitis from Finland and the UK, with all cases linked to the same furn

Resistivity monitoring for internal erosion detection at Hallby embankment dam

Internal erosion is one of the major reasons for embankment dam failures. Despite this, the knowledge of the temporal development of internal erosion in full scale structures is limited. Results from a research field monitoring program by daily resistivity measurements in Sweden clearly show long term changes in resistivity in the embankment dam. The results indicate that resistivity monitoring ca
