Introduction
Levi on Money Pumps and Diachronic Dutch-Book Arguments
My focus is on pragmatic arguments for various ‘rationality constraints’ on a decision maker’s state of mind: on his beliefs or preferences. An argument of this kind purports to show that a violator of a given constraint can be exposed to a decision problem in which he will act to his guaranteed disadvantage. Dramatically put, he can be exploited by a clever bookie who doesn’t know more than the a
The Margins of Writing: A Study of Arthur Machen and the Literary Field of the 1890s
The aim of this dissertation is to analyse the early writings of Arthur Machen (1863?1947) by focusing on three aspects of literary production: the field, the author, and the text. In all these aspects position-takings in the field, the construction of an author's identity, and textual production ? Machen's early career is informed by a particular and idiosyncratic notion of aesthetic creation, re

The phenomenology of deep hypnosis: Quiescent and physically active
Abstract in UndeterminedTo study the phenomenology of hypnotic virtuosos, theauthor employed a 2 (hypnosis vs. control) × 3 (quiescent, pedaling astationary bike, having a motor pedal the bike) within-subjects designwith quantitative and qualitative measures. In a “neutral hypnosis”context with the only suggestion being to go as deeply into hypnosisas possible, participants reported alterations in
Synchronous oscillations of length and stiffness during loaded shortening of frog muscle fibres
A study was made of the damped oscillations in fibre length that are observed when isolated muscle fibres from the frog are released during the plateau of an isometric tetanus to shorten against a constant load (force clamp recording) near the isometric level (temperature, 1.0-11.0 C; initial sarcomere length, 2.25 m). 2. The oscillatory length changes of the whole fibre were associated with simil

Early prediction of severity in acute pancreatitis. Is this possible?
One out of ten cases of acute pancreatitis develops into severe acute pancreatitis which is a life threatening disorder with a high mortality rate. The other nine cases are self limiting and need very little therapy. The specificity of good clinical judgement on admission, concerning the prognosis of the attack, is high (high specificity) but misses a lot of severe cases (low sensitivity). The pre
Determinants of force rise time during isometric contraction of frog muscle fibres
Force-velocity (F-V) relationships were determined for single frog muscle fibres during the rise of tetanic contraction. F-V curves obtained using isotonic shortening early in a tetanic contraction were different from those obtained at equivalent times with isovelocity shortening, apparently because changing activation early in the contraction leads, in isovelocity experiments, to changing force a

Inverse spectral problem for quantum graphs
The inverse spectral problem for the Laplace operator on a finite metric graph is investigated. It is shown that this problem has a unique solution for graphs with rationally independent edges and without vertices having valence 2. To prove the result, a trace formula connecting the spectrum of the Laplace operator with the set of periodic orbits for the metric graph is established.
Hydrogenation of Benzene to Cyclohexene on an Unsupported Ruthenium Catalyst: Effects of Poisons
The influence of poisoning of ruthenium catalysing the selective hydrogenation of benzene to cyclohexene has been studied. Both the yield of cyclohexene and the rate of hydrogenation are greatly affected by the degree of poisoning (e.g. FeSO4, FeCl3, TiCl3 and oxygen), and may also be optimised. A reproducible catalyst has been prepared by precipitating the catalyst precursor, as the hydroxide, in
Environmental atmosphere of outdoor residential areas in southern Sweden: A comparison of experts and residents
The purpose of this project was to help bridge the gap between developers and residents by creating a design criteria checklist for outdoor residential areas and to validate the checklist by means of a post-occupancy evaluation (POE) carried out by the residents in six housing areas. Items addressed in the checklist covered general layout, complexity and coherence, identity and affection, construc
Solitary waves for a generalized Camassa-Holm equation
We establish the existence of solitary wave solutions with exponential decay at infinity for a nonlinear dispersive partial differential equation. As a by-product, the existence of smooth solitary waves for the Camassa-Holm equation, modeling water waves and waves in elastic rods, is obtained.
