Rare variants in PPARG with decreased activity in adipocyte differentiation are associated with increased risk of type 2 diabetes

Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARG) is a master transcriptional regulator of adipocyte differentiation and a canonical target of antidiabetic thiazolidinedione medications. In rare families, loss-of-function (LOF) mutations in PPARG are known to cosegregate with lipodystrophy and insulin resistance; in the general population, the common P12A variant is associated with a decrea

Two-dimensional Fano lineshapes : Excited-state absorption contributions

Fano interferences in nanostructures are influenced by dissipation effects as well as many-body interactions. Two-dimensional coherent spectroscopies have just begun to be applied to these systems where the spectroscopic signatures of a discrete-continuum structure are not known. In this article, we calculate the excited-state absorption contribution for different models of higher lying excited st

The cost and burden of cancer in the European Union 1995–2014

Background: There is an intense debate about the cost of cancer and the value of new treatments. However, there is limited data on the cost of cancer in the European Union (EU) and how costs relate to the burden of disease. This paper presents new estimates on the development of the cost of cancer in the EU 1995–2014, with a focus on the major cost components: total health expenditure, cancer drug

EXPANDED CHOREOGRAPHY: Shifting the agency of movement in The Artificial Nature Project and 69 positions

Through two books and a series of video documentations of live performances Mette Ingvartsen makes choreography into a territory of physical, artistic and social experimentation. The Artificial Nature Series focusses on how relations between human and non-human agency can be explored and reconfigured through choreography. By investigating and creating a ‘nonhuman theater’ questions regarding mater

Focusing on self or others has different consequences for psychological well-being : A longitudinal study of the effects of distinct interpersonal goals

A longitudinal study examined the association between interpersonal goals (selfimage and compassionate goals) and depression, anxiety, and stress symptoms. We propose that having self-image goals (trying to create and manage a positive image) may lead to psychological distress, while genuinely taking others' needs into account and caring for their welfare (compassionate goals) may promote psycholo

Recall of Threat and Submissiveness in Childhood and Psychopathology : The Mediator Effect of Self-Criticism

Research has robustly shown that early negative parenting experiences are associated with psychopathology and self-criticism in adulthood. This study investigates recall of personal feelings of perceived threat and subordination in childhood and its relation to psychopathology. In addition, we explore the mediator role of self-criticism in this association. A sample of 193 subjects from the genera

Cerebral glutamine and glutamate levels in relation to compromised energy metabolism : a microdialysis study in subarachnoid hemorrhage patients

Astrocytic glutamate (Glt) uptake keeps brain interstitial Glt levels low. Within the astrocytes Glt is converted to glutamine (Gln), which is released and reconverted to Glt in neurons. The Glt-Gln cycle is energy demanding and impaired energy metabolism has been suggested to cause low interstitial Gln/Glt ratios. Using microdialysis (MD) measurements from visually noninjured cortex in 33 neuroin

Using fluorescence detected two-dimensional spectroscopy to investigate initial exciton delocalization between coupled chromophores

Förster theory describes electronic exciton energy migration in molecular assemblies as an incoherent hopping process between donor and acceptor molecules. The rate is expressed in terms of the overlap integral between donor fluorescence and acceptor absorption spectra. Typical time scales for systems like photosynthetic antennae are on the order of a few picoseconds. Prior to transfer, it is assu

Geophysical investigation of arural water point installation program in Nampula province, Mozambique

There are many projects in Mozambique for poverty reduction. One of these projects is funded by Millennium Challenge Account (MCA) and is aimed to install a total of 600 rural water points in the province of Nampula and Cabo Delgado in crystalline rock zone. Each water point consists of a drilled well, a water pump and a communal washing basin. Vertical Electrical Sounding (VES) was used for asses

Teaching English for young language learners at Grade 5: Teachers' beliefs in two contrasting national approaches compared, and pedagogical implications

The aim of the paper was to investigate EFL (English as a foreign language) primary school teachers’ beliefs regarding their teaching methods used in English at grade 5 in the classroom, which was a part of my PhD research (Son, 2018). Interviews (teachers at Grade 5 observed classes; Responses N=2, Sweden and N=3, Vietnam) and questionnaires to English teachers at grade 5 in Swedish and Vietnames

Crop pests and predators exhibit inconsistent responses to surrounding landscape composition

The idea that noncrop habitat enhances pest control and represents a win–win opportunity to conserve biodiversity and bolster yields has emerged as an agroecological paradigm. However, while noncrop habitat in landscapes surrounding farms sometimes benefits pest predators, natural enemy responses remain heterogeneous across studies and effects on pests are inconclusive. The observed heterogeneity

Ultrafast X-ray spectroscopy for structural dynamics studies in chemistry and biology

Time-resolved x-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) spectroscopy with pico-second temporal resolution is a new method to observe electronic and geometric structures of short-lived reaction intermediates. It combines an intense femto-second laser source synchronized to the x-ray pulses delivered into the microXAS beamline of the Swiss Light Source (SLS). We present key experiments on charge transf

Systolic-diastolic coupling

The normally functioning heart delivers a steady supply of oxygen and nutrients to the body over a broad range of physiological states and loading conditions. Efficient cardiac performance at rest and during exercise is therefore a primary evolutionary directive for survival. The four-chambered heart is primarily a volume pump. It couples systolic and diastolic properties because of simultaneous r

Ouzo polymerization : A bottom-up green synthesis of polymer nanoparticles by free-radical polymerization of monomers spontaneously nucleated by the Ouzo effect; Application to molecular imprinting

HYPOTHESIS: Top-down fabrication of polymer nanoparticles from preformed polymers by spontaneous colloid formation under influence of the Ouzo effect is a widely applied concept whereas bottom-up free-radical polymerization of monomers nucleated under the Ouzo regime have found limited application after a seminal report almost half a century ago. We hypothesized that the approach would be of value

Binocular mirror–symmetric microsaccadic sampling enables Drosophila hyperacute 3D vision

Neural mechanisms behind stereopsis, which requires simultaneous disparity inputs from two eyes, have remained mysterious. Here we show how ultrafast mirror-symmetric photomechanical contractions in the frontal forward-facing left and right eye photoreceptors give Drosophila superresolution three-dimensional (3D) vision. By interlinking multiscale in vivo assays with multiscale simulations, we rev

Care pathways in atopic dermatitis : a retrospective population-based cohort study

Background: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a complex disease with variations in severity and healthcare utilization. Examining patient pathways through analyses of longitudinal patient data provides an opportunity to describe real-world clinical patient care and evaluate healthcare access and treatment. Objective: To describe longitudinal care pathways including health care management, treatment patter

Cost-effectiveness of add-on treatments to metformin in a Swedish setting: liraglutide vs sulphonylurea or sitagplitin.

Abstract Objective: To evaluate long-run cost-effectiveness in a Swedish setting for liraglutide compared with sulphonylureas (glimepiride) or sitagliptin, all as add-on to metformin for patients with type 2 diabetes insufficiently controlled with metformin in monotherapy. Methods: The IHE Cohort Model of Type 2 Diabetes was used to evaluate clinical and economic outcomes from a societal perspecti

Isolation and killing of candidate chronic myeloid leukemia stem cells by antibody targeting of IL-1 receptor accessory protein.

Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) is genetically characterized by the Philadelphia (Ph) chromosome, formed through a reciprocal translocation between chromosomes 9 and 22 and giving rise to the constitutively active tyrosine kinase P210 BCR/ABL1. Therapeutic strategies aiming for a cure of CML will require full eradication of Ph chromosome-positive (Ph(+)) CML stem cells. Here we used gene-expression

Effects of 2,3-butanedione monoxime on activation of contraction and crossbridge kinetics in intact and chemically skinned smooth muscle fibres from guinea pig taenia coli

The effects of 2,3-butanedione monoxime (BDM) were studied in smooth muscle fibres from guinea pig taenia coli. In intact muscle, active force during contractions induced by high-K+ was inhibited by about 10% in 1 mM BDM and by approximately 70% in 10 mM BDM. Intracellular [Ca2+] during contraction, measured with the fura-2 technique, was reduced in the presence of BDM. The reduction in force and
