Pancreatic Trypsin Cleaves Intestinal Alkaline Sphingomyelinase from Mucosa and Enhances the sphingomyelinase Activity.

Sphingomyelin (SM) hydrolysis in the gut has implications in colonic tumorigenesis and cholesterol absorption. It is triggered by intestinal alkaline sphingomyelinase (Alk-SMase) that is present in the intestinal mucosa and content. The mechanism by which the enzyme is released into the lumen is not clear. We studied whether trypsin can dissociate Alk-SMase from the mucosa and affect its activity.

Dye-sensitization of the TiO2 rutile (110) surface by perylene dyes: Quantum-chemical periodic B3LYP computations

The adsorption of perylene derivatives on the rutile TiO2(110) surface was studied by quantum-chemical periodic calculations employing the hybrid HF-DFT functional B3LYP. The perylene molecule, which is a possible constituent of dyes in dye-sensitized solar cells, was functionalized by attachment of phosphonic acid or carboxylic acid groups to permit anchoring to the metal oxide surface. The ancho

Studies on correlation of antimutagenic and antiproliferative activities of Juglans regia L

We investigated the effect of water and acetone extract of Juglans regia L. to evaluate its antimutagenic and antiproliferative activities. The antimutagenic study using TA98 and TA100 tester strains of Salmonella revealed the water and acetone extracts to be more effective than the benzene and chloroform extracts in inhibiting the revertants induced by 2-aminoflourene (2AF) in TA100 tester strain

Experiences of coercion during investigation and treatment.

According to Swedish legislation (LVM) compulsory treatment shall be decided on if someone, due to ongoing abuse of alcohol, drugs or volatile solvents, is in need of care to overcome abuse and if a voluntary intervention is not possible. Very little research has been conducted in Sweden on this particular legislation with regard to the clients' experiences of entire process from assessment to aft

Protein kinase C inhibitors decrease endothelin ET(B) receptor mRNA expression and contraction during organ culture of rat mesenteric artery.

The effect of protein kinase C (PKC) inhibitors on the induction of endothelin ET(B) receptors during organ culture was examined in isolated segments of the rat mesenteric artery. After 24 h of organ culture, the endothelin ET(B) receptor agonist sarafotoxin 6c (S6c) induced a strong contraction compared to fresh segments. The contractile response after 24-h organ culture to S6c was studied in pre

Old people in pain: A comparative study.

To investigate the prevalence of pain in older people (75+), compare those in pain to those without regarding demographics, social network, functional limitations, fatigue, sleeping problems, depressed mood and quality of life (QOL), and identify variables associated with pain, a cross-sectional, prospective survey was conducted in an age-stratified sample of 4,093 people aged 75–105 years old. Th

MTA1, a transcriptional activator of breast cancer amplified sequence 3

Here we define a function of metastasis-associated protein 1 (MTA1), a presumed corepressor of estrogen receptor alpha (ER alpha), as a transcriptional activator of Breast Cancer Amplified Sequence 3 (BCAS3), a gene amplified and overexpressed in breast cancers. We identified BCAS3 as a MTA1 chromatin target in a functional genomic screen. MTA1 stimulation of BCAS3 transcription required ERa and i

Molecular classification of familial non-BRCA1/BRCA2 breast cancer

In the decade since their discovery, the two major breast cancer susceptibility genes BRCA1 and BRCA2, have been shown conclusively to be involved in a significant fraction of families segregating breast and ovarian cancer. However, it has become equally clear that a large proportion of families segregating breast cancer alone are not caused by mutations in BRCA1 or BRCA2. Unfortunately, despite i

Vesicle formation and other structures in aqueous dispersios of monoolein and sodium oleate

The macroscopic appearance and microstructure in the dilute corner of the ternary monoolein (MO)-sodium oleate (NaO)-water ((H2O)-H-2) system have been investigated by visual inspection and by using direct structural imaging with light microscopy and cryogenic transmission electron microscopy. The microstructural transformations that take place between the micellar phase (binary NaO-(H2O)-H-2 axis

Photocurrent Spectra and Fast Kinetic Studies of P3HT/PCBM Mixed with a Dye for Photoconversion in the Near-IR Region

Photoconversion properties are demonstrated for a device based on a small dye molecule, absorbing light in the near-IR region, mixed with two organic charge transport materials and together forming a dye-sensitized organic bulk heterojunction. The organic dye molecule, phthalocyanine (1,4,8,11,15,18,22,25-octabutoxy-29H,31H-phthalocyanine), mixed with a blend of poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) and 1

Role of subintimal angioplasty (SAP) for critical limb ischemia

Ever since Dr. Bolia et al. published their paper of intentional subintimal angioplasty more than 20 years ago it have become a more and more used technique in several centres around the world. Its popularities have gained the last 5 years, following a number of publications from various centres in Europe and the USA. After its initial successes in the femoropopliteal segment, the techniques has b

A Quest for Information-And Data Literacy : Can 6th Graders Make Informed Decisions?

Information- and data literacy, the ability to critically examine and evaluate information and arguments in relation to empirical evidence, is increasingly crucial in a world overflowing with data and information from a multitude of sources. Information- and data literacy in younger students being understudied, we investigate these skills in Swedish 6th graders to learn more about the educational

Harmonic morphisms and minimal conformal foliations on Lie groups

Let $G$ be a Lie group equipped with a left-invariant Riemannian metric. Let $K$ be a semisimple and normal subgroup of $G$ generating a left-invariant conformal foliation $\F$ on $G$. We then show that the foliation $\F$ is Riemannian and minimal. This means that locally the leaves of $\F$ are fibres of a harmonic morphism. We also prove that if the metric restricted to $K$ is biinvariant then $\

Vortex formation time in female athletes

Regular, vigorous physical activity can have a significant impact on cardiac function, leading to cardiac morphological alterations that may be challenging to distinguish from pathological changes. Therefore, new screening methods are needed to accurately differentiate between adaptive changes and pathological alterations in athletes. Vortex formation time (VFT) is an emerging method that shows po

Stairway to heaven via the highway to hell : a qualitative study on patients’ experience of knee joint replacement surgery

Background: Knee replacement (KR) is the most common osteoarthritis (OA) related surgery. Studies suggest that there are major international and national disparities in pre-operative information, support and access to rehabilitation which have a substantial impact on patients’ perceived outcomes of the KR. The aim of this qualitative study was to explore experiences and perceptions of the care pat
