Consistency Issues of Lagrangian Particle Tracking Applied to a Spray Jet in Crossflow

Numerical simulations are performed for multiphase jets in crossflow. The flow solver uses an Eulerian/Lagrangian approach. Turbulence in the gas phase is modeled in the framework of large eddy simulation. The dispersed phase is handled using Lagrangian particle tracking. The model assumptions of solvers for Lagrangian particle tracking are critically assessed for typical flow conditions of spray

Evolutionary relations between subtypes of telomere-associated repeats in Chironomus

Telomere-associated DNA in Chironomus pallidivittatus contains tandemly repeated 340-bp units. We show that they are distributed among several subtypes of which we have characterized two, M1 and D1, with regard to base sequence, homogeneity, and intertelomeric distribution. Each subpopulation is highly homogeneous and the two subtypes have identical consensus sequences throughout 90% of their leng

Usefulness of archival biobank samples for genetic epidemiologic studies

Sweden has a long history of maintaining population-based registries and biobanks. This has resulted in large sample collections with long follow-up and large numbers of prospectively occurring disease endpoints providing an extensive resource for genetic research. However, the largest biobanks contain sample materials that have previously been considered suboptimal for genetic research. We have

Statistical interfaces for production of a permanent magnet based rotor

A production-system simulation model for manufacturing cost of a permanent-magnet based rotor, analyzing the influence of uncertain parameters by utilizing the Monte Carlo method. The uncertain parameters studied include investment and bill of materials costs as well as cycle time. The resulting influence of these uncertainties are presented for each case individually, as well as all possible comb

Fixation of the cemented acetabular component in hip arthroplasty

Den föreliggande avhandlingen omfattar såvälIn total hip arthroplasty cemented fixation of the acetabular component is a generally successful concept, but the rate of aseptic loosening and consequent revision surgery is still too high. One of the crucial factors for longterm implant survival is the initial fixation and stability. This thesis comprises experimental and clinical studies, including radiostereometry (RSA) with up to 5 years fol

European manikin standards and models to calculate thermal insulation

ISO 9920 defines three insulation calculation methods: global, parallel and serial. It considers global method a general one that works in any situation, and parallel and serial could be used in specific cases. EN ISO 15831 is the basic manikin testing standard. It gives only two possibilities: parallel and serial. The specific requirements for equations’ use are not set as in ISO 9920, e.g. unifo

Hand function, Everyday Occupations and Wellbeing in Individuals with Systemic Sclerosis

Systemisk skleros (sklerodermi) är en ovanlig bindvävsjukdom, som karakteriseras av förändring av immunförsvarSystemic sclerosis (scleroderma) is a connective tissue disease which, in various ways, influences an individual’s ability to participate in everyday occupations. The general objective of this work was to elucidate the consequences of scleroderma with respect to hand function, everyday occupations and wellbeing, in order to provide a knowledge base suitable for occupational therapy interventions.

Formation, pattern and physiological effects of short-chain fatty acids - Impact of various indigestible

The short-chain fatty acids (SCFA) formed from colonic fermentation of indigestible carbohydrates have been suggested to exert different physiological effects. In this thesis the fermentability and SCFA produced from various indigestible carbohydrates in the hind-gut were investigated using balance experiments in rats. In the case of propionate, experiments were also performed to evaluate possibl

Springback analysis in Advanced High Strength Steel using a new flexible semi-industrial tool geometry

The automotive industry is using more and more of Advanced High Strength Steel in order to reduce the weight of the car. Since this will generate more springback, it is of vital importance to be able to predict the amount of springback in the parts. Otherwise, many late changes have to be made in order to fit the parts in their position. In order to increase the ability to understand and test the

Staphylococcal enterotoxin H - structure and function of a superantigen

Huden, slemhinnorna och det låga pH-värdet i magsäcken är några av de yttre barriärer som hindrar många skadliga organismer atThe aim of this thesis was to characterise the biological functions of the superantigen staphylococcal enterotoxin H (SEH). Superantigens are highly immunostimulatory proteins, which crosslink T cells and antigen presenting cells (APCs). SEH is included in a family of staphylococcal enterotoxins (SEs) produced by certain strains of Staphylococcus aureus. The three-dimensional fold of SEH was dete
