Extraocular Vision in a Brittle Star Is Mediated by Chromatophore Movement in Response to Ambient Light
Almost all animals can sense light, but only those with spatial vision can “see.” Conventionally, this was restricted to animals possessing discrete visual organs (eyes), but extraocular vision could facilitate vision without eyes. Echinoderms form the focus of extraocular vision research [1–7], and the brittle star Ophiocoma wendtii, which exhibits light-responsive color change and shelter seekin
Making visible, rendering obscure : Reading the plastic crisis through contemporary artistic visual representations
Since the mid-twentieth century, plastic has become a ubiquitous material. However, its produc- tion, consumption and disposal on a massive scale have led to a range of devastating conse- quences that together form the ‘plastic crisis’. This paper presents a novel mapping of the ways contemporary artistic visual representations narrate and politicize the plastic crisis through their different mess
Infrared Photodetectors based on Nanowire Arrays with Embedded Quantum Heterostructures
Optical sensors operating in the infrared range of the electromagnetic spectrum are key components in a variety ofapplications including optical communication, night vision, medical diagnosis, surveillance, and astronomy.Semiconductor nanowires have great potential for realizing broadband infrared photodetectors with excellentresponsivity, low dark current and low noise, and a unique compatibility

Trust, happiness and mortality: Findings from a prospective US population-based survey
There has been an abundance of research discussing the health implications of generalised trust and happiness over the past two decades. Both attitudes have been touted as independent predictors of morbidity and mortality, with strikingly similar trajectories and biological pathways being hypothesised. To date, however, neither trust nor happiness have been considered simultaneously as predictors
A European multicentre evaluation of detection and typing methods for human enteroviruses and parechoviruses using RNA transcripts
Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) detection has become the gold standard for diagnosis and typing of enterovirus (EV) and human parechovirus (HPeV) infections. Its effectiveness depends critically on using the appropriate sample types and high assay sensitivity as viral loads in cerebrospinal fluid samples from meningitis and sepsis clinical presentation can be extremely low. This study evaluated th
Two Prevalent ∼100-kb GYPB Deletions Causative of the GPB-Deficient Blood Group MNS Phenotype S-s-U-in Black Africans
The U antigen (MNS5) is one of 49 antigens belonging to the MNS blood group system (ISBT002) carried on glycophorins A (GPA) and B (GPB). U is present on the red blood cells in almost all Europeans and Asians but absent in approximately 1.0% of Black Africans. U negativity coincides with negativity for S (MNS3) and s (MNS4) on GPB, thus be called S-s-U-, and is thought to arise from homozygous del

Taking off from Natural Resources? Fiscal dependence in Andean and Nordic countries, 1850s-1930s
Natural resources can have a powerful impact on the public budget but may also hinder the development of other sources of revenue, thus limiting the long-term development of fiscal capacity in resource-rich countries. This article evaluates both possible effects bycomparing the long-term evolution (1850s-1930s) of public revenues in Andean (Bolivia,Chile and Peru) and Nordic (Norway and Sweden) co
Mapping of domestic hot water circulation losses in buildings – results from 134 measurements
The hot water circulation system in a building is a system which helps prevent Legionella problems whilst ensuring that tenants have access to hot water quickly. Poorly designed or implemented systems not only increase the risk to people’s health and thermal comfort, but even result in an increase in the energy needed for this system to function properly. Results from previous studies showed that The hot water circulation system in a building is a system which helps prevent Legionella problems whilst ensuring that tenants have access to hot water quickly. Thermodynamic modelling of composition and crystal structure of ternary nanowires
An analytic expression for the composition of a ternary solid material nucleating from a quaternary liquid melt has been derived. This theory has been applied to Au-catalyzed and self-catalyzed, nucleation limited VLS growth of ternary III-V nanowires. Next, the developed model has been applied for the description of the composition dependence of the ZB/WZ polytypism in ternary nanowires.

Characterization and modeling of acousto-optic signal strengths in highly scattering media
Ultrasound optical tomography (UOT) is an imaging technique based on the acousto-optic effect that can perform optical imaging with ultrasound resolution inside turbid media, and is thus interesting for biomedical applications, e.g. for assessing tissue blood oxygenation. In this paper, we present near background free measurements of UOT signal strengths using slow light filter signal detection. W
