The aim of the work presented in this thesis was to improve ethanol formation from xylose in recombinant Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains. This was achieved by decreasing the xylitol by-product formation. Gre3p is the major xylose-reducing enzyme in S. cerevisiae. Ypr1p, Gcy1p and the protein encoded by YJR096w also have the ability to reduce xylose in cell extracts. Furthermore, Gre3p, Ypr1p, Gc

The rapid growth of traffic induced by Internet services makes the simple over-provisioning of resources not economical and hence imposes new requirements on the dimensioning methods. Therefore, the problem of network design with the objective of minimizing the cost and at the same time solving the tradeoff between maximizing the service data flows and providing fair treatment of all demands becom

Fires in school buildings caused by arson are a major problem in Sweden. The costs of these fires are disproportionately high compared to the costs of fires in buildings in general, and it has been shown that fires that start outside of the building in connection with an exterior wall, so called exterior fires are especially problematic. However, technical systems can be used to mitigate the conse

In this thesis, two questions are answered: What is burnout?, and What causes burnout? Essentialist conceptions of burnout are criticized and burnout is regarded as a syndrome in the sense of a practice concept, not possible to delineate exactly. Practice concepts are compared to social constructions. From the syndrome idea, the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI), is chosen as an operationalization o

I klinisk miljö (diagnostisk radiologi) benämns den bildgivande uIn this project, the potential of magnetic resonance (MR) imaging and spectroscopy in studies of microcirculation and haemodynamics was evaluated. The spatial and temporal characteristics of human pulsatile brain-tissue movements in healthy individuals, relevant for the understanding of the cerebrospinal-fluid (CSF) circulation and the pathogenesis of hydrocephalus, were thoroughly investigated. This treatise examines what I call the ‘traditional view’ on the phenomenology of dreaming. According to this view, dreams are experienced in more or less the same way as waking reality – that is, our experience of “being-in-the-dream” is very much like our experience of “being-in-the-world”. The traditional view will be examined from three different standpoints: phenomenology, cognitive science a

When the time structure (chronome) of pancreatic secretion was studied after weaning in 5-week-old pigs, the zero-amplitude (no-rhythm) assumption was rejected for the about-weekly (circaseptan, CS) and about-half-weekly (circasemiseptan, CSS) chronome components. When the data were assessed individually on a day-to-day basis, a 24-hour component was suggested (P<.10) for the variables measured in
