‘A Powerful and Essential Means of Action’ : UNESCO and the Humanities as Science Diplomacy (1945–1949)
This article explores how the humanities were imagined by UNESCO to contribute to their quest for improved international relations and worldwide peace. It analyses the negotiations on what role the humanities could play in diplomatic work by looking at the process that led to the founding of the International Council for Philosophy and Humanistic Studies (ICPHS/CIPSH) in 1949. Despite being ingrai
The effect of the freshwater-sea transition on short-term dissolved organic carbon bio-reactivity : the case of Baltic Sea river mouths
Terrestrially-derived dissolved organic carbon (DOC) is transported to estuarine systems via river runoff, where it is largely degraded by microbial communities. I studied the combined influence of salinity (NaCl), microbial community (marine vs. freshwater) and inorganic nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) availability on DOC degradation rates in 10 major rivers in Sweden sampled during summer. The D

The Concept of Recovery and Temporality in Drug User's Stories
Temporality and the embodiment of time is an important dimension in different recovery models, as well as in drug users' recovery stories. Aim: The main objective of this article is twofold: fi rst, to perform a critical analysis of prominent recovery models and their multiple temporalities, and second, to explore of how female drug users, enrolled in drug treatment, narrate their recovery process
Passenger flows and dwell times for commuter trains in Stockholm
This study investigates how the volume and flow of passengers affect dwell times, using data from commuter trains in Stockholm. We show that dwell times often take longer than scheduled and that most station stops involve rather limited numbers of passengers. Improving the performance at these stops with small volumes can thus have a sizeable impact on the overall on-time performance. We find a qu
Production, utilization and implementation of coconut charcoal in rural Mozambique : As a clean cooking fuel and a way to improve economic empowerment of women in Linga Linga
Air pollution is a global health problem and in Mozambique, indoor air pollution is primarily caused by cooking over an open fire. This study examines the potential of coconut charcoal as a cleaner cooking fuel and as a possible source of income for women in the village of Linga Linga, Mozambique. Previous research conducted in the village identified a need to investigate the willingness of the co
Urban Geoelectrical Survey and Spatially Constrained Interpretation for a New Metro in Copenhagen
Geophysical methods are prone to fail in an urban environment as all sources of noise are present in cities. The Fælledparken Park, a large open space area in Copenhagen, Denmark is not an exception. However, an extension of the metro along sections of high variability on the surface of a limestone surface motivated the use of geoelectrics as complement to seismic methods. The site conditions have
Improved Prognosis and Low Failure Rate with Anticoagulation as First-Line Therapy in Mesenteric Venous Thrombosis
BACKGROUND: Monotherapy with anticoagulation has been considered as first-line therapy in patients with mesenteric venous thrombosis (MVT). The aim of this study was to evaluate outcome, prognostic factors, and failure rate of anticoagulation as monotherapy, and to identify when bowel resection was needed.METHODS: Retrospective study of consecutive patients with MVT diagnosed between 2000 and 2015
