Flight performance in night-flying sweat bees suffers at low light levels.

The sweat bee Megalopta (Hymenoptera: Halictidae), unlike most bees, flies in extremely dim light. And although nocturnal insects are often equipped with superposition eyes, which greatly enhance light capture, Megalopta performs visually guided flight with apposition eyes. We examined how light limits Megalopta's flight behavior by measuring flight times and corresponding light levels and compari

Ultrasensitive Detection of HIV-1 p24 Antigen Using Nanofunctionalized Surfaces in a Capacitive Immunosensor.

The HIV-1 capsid protein, p24 antigen, is of considerable diagnostic interest because following HIV exposure it is detectable several days earlier than host-generated HIV antibodies (which are the target of almost all current tests used in the field) and can be used to design very sensitive assays without the need for PCR. Here, we present an ultrasensitive capacitive immunosensor that is capable

Low-Rank Second-Order Splitting of Large-Scale Differential Riccati Equations

We apply first- and second-order splitting schemes to the differential Riccati equation. Such equations are very important in e.g. linear quadratic regulator (LQR) problems, where they provide a link between the state of the system and the optimal input. The methods can also be extended to generalized Riccati equations, e.g. arising from LQR problems given in implicit form. In contrast to previous

Soot Formation in Unstrained Diffusion Flames

The formation of soot particles has been investigated in CH4/O-2 diffusion flames using a unique burner design, which allows the creation of a nearly unstrained planar reaction sheet. Spatially resolved soot volume fractions were obtained using laser-induced incandescence. These soot measurements and the sooting limits were obtained as a function of bulk flow across the flame and mixture strength.

Kinetics of the reduction of the Rh(111) surface oxide: Linking spectroscopy and atomic-scale information

The reduction of the surface oxide on Rh(111) by H-2 was observed in situ by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and high-resolution core level spectroscopy (HRCLS). At room temperature, H-2 does not adsorb on the oxide, only in reduced areas. Reduction starts in very few sites, almost exclusively in stepped areas. One can also initiate the reduction process by deliberately creating defects with t

On quantification of error and uncertainty in two-zone models used in fire safety design

The error in smoke transport models have mainly been analyzed with qualitative approaches till date. The results make it difficult to perform a quantitative assessment of the model error in fire safety design applications. Even if a model has a substantial model error, it can be a very useful tool, as long as the designer is aware of the errors and the uncertainties in the predictions. This paper

A Bradoriid and Brachiopod Dominated Shelly Fauna from the Furongian (Cambrian) of Västergötland, Sweden

A small assemblage of shelly fossils, dominated by the brachiopod Treptotreta jucunda and the bradoriid arthropod Mongolitubulus aspermachaera new species is described from a Furongian limestone of Vastergotland, south-central Sweden. Mongolitubulus aspermachaera is represented in the assemblage by individual valves and numerous, ornamented spines. Valves and spines share identical ornament and mi

Can histology solve the riddle of non-functioning electrodes; factors influencing the biocompatibillity of brain machine interfaces.

Neural interfaces hold great promise to become invaluable clinical and diagnostic tools in the near future. However, the biocompatibility and the long-term stability of the implanted interfaces are far from optimized. There are several factors that need to be addressed and standardized when improving the long-term success of an implanted electrode. We have chosen to focus on three key factors when

Studies of chlorophyll-a levels in the North Aegean Sea using SeaWiFS data

The hydrographical characteristics of the North Aegean Sea (NAS) have been studied using in-situ data and thermal NOAA AVHRR data. Lately, efforts to simulate the circulation patterns in the NAS have also been performed. Thus, it has been found that the discharge of water of Black Sea origin (BSW) affects extensive areas of the NAS surface waters. Another meso-scale phenomenon is the extensive upw

Design and disorder : perspectives from science and theology

Comparison of automatic reduction procedures for ignition chemistry

In this paper, we present a comparison between the reduced mechanisms obtained through a computational singular perturbation method (CSP) and the reduced mechanisms obtained through a lifetime analysis based only on the diagonal elements of the Jacobian matrix and a species sensitivity The two methods are used for the analysis of autoignition, which is an interesting test situation because of the

Molecularly imprinted polymer thin films on quartz crystal microbalance using a surface bound photo-radical initiator

The present work aims to study preparation of thin MIP films on a gold-coated QCM resonator in a well-controlled and reproducible manner. A surface-bound photo-radical initiator was used to furnish an imprinting polymerization in a dilute solution of template, functional monomer and crosslinker. Prior to polymerization, the photo-initiator was covalently coupled to a self-assembled monolayer of ca

Effect of water storage time on frost resistance of concrete

In high performance concrete (HPC) with low water-cement ratio, cement reaction will cause substantial drying expressed in terms of relative humidity (RH) of the pore water. This phenomenon is called self-desiccation. The RH-values as low as 85% have been measured in dense concretes that have been stored for more than 18 months in water. This means that there is almost no freezable water in the co

Luminosity Measurements and Two-Photon Physics with the DELPHI VSAT at LEP

This thesis describes analysis of data from the DELPHI Very Small Angle Tagger (VSAT) calorimeter at LEP1. The VSAT consists of four Silicon-Tungsten calorimeter modules symmetrically positioned 7.7 meters away from the interaction point. It measures elastically scattered electrons and positrons, Bhabha events, within the polar angular region between 5-12 mrad. Trigger efficiency and reconstructio

Pulsar Binaries as Gravitational-Wave Sources: Rate predictions

Pulsar binaries are important targets for ground-based and future space-borne gravitational-wave (GW) detectors. In order for improving detector design and assessing detector performances, it is a prerequisite to understand the astrophysics of GW sources such as the population size or merger rates. Here, we summarize recent results for Galactic merger rates of two known types of pulsar binaries: (
