Three tips for developing your examinations

Digitalisation places new demands on our assessments, but also creates opportunities for effective and engaging assessments. Here are three tips on how you can develop your assessments using digital tools. 1. Consider the assessment formatHere are some examples of assessment formats, but there are others. Which ones you choose depends on your learning objectives for the course. Please feel free to

Preservation and disposal of documents

The basic idea of archiving is to preserve information. Disposal should be undertaken in a manner that minimises the loss of information. Disposal should never take place without regulatory support. What does disposal of documents mean?Disposal means the destruction of information in its entirety and forever (discarding, shredding, burning, deleting electronically etc.). You must ensure that dispo

Investigating microbial community of Pu-erh teas (brewed and non-brewed) and the ability of bacteria originating from the tea to survive in the gastrointestinal tract

The microbial community in five commercial Pu-erh tea products and one Liu Bao Cha tea were investigated in this study with the aim to search for beneficial live bacteria. Three different treatments were applied for every tea; non-brewed, brewed with and without leaf filtration. The results showed microbial activity in all teas and particularly lactic acid bacteria (LAB), except in the Liu Bao Cha

Development of Novel Models for Studying Osteoclasts

Popular Abstract in English My PhD thesis has focused on increasing the understanding of the osteoclasts, the cells responsible for degradation of bone, by studying the rare hereditary disease autosomal recessive osteopetrosis (ARO). ARO is present already at birth and is caused by mutations affecting the osteoclasts ability to degrade bone. Non-functional osteoclasts lead to dramatic increases inThis thesis focuses on developing and characterizing novel models for studying osteoclasts with an emphasis on how mutations abolishing osteoclastic acidification affect osteoclast signaling and bone remodeling, as well as how to treat patients bearing these rare mutations. Bone remodeling is under normal circumstances a tightly balanced process where resorption of bone by osteoclasts is followed

Exposure and nasal inflammation in workers heating polyurethane.

AbstractOBJECTIVE. To test the hypothesis that exposure to thermal-degradation products of polyurethane (PUR), particularly isocyanates, induced nasal inflammation.METHODS. Thirty-eight workers -14 with a history of work-related nasal symptoms (WRS/Nose), and 15 referents without such history - exposed to sprayed and heated PUR glue, were studied with regard to biomarkers of isocyanate exposure [4

2nd and 3rd generation electrodes for biosensors and biofuel cells

Popular Abstract in English The catalytic and electrochemical properties of tryptophan repressor-binding protein (WrbA), pyranose dehydrogenase (PDH), cellobiose dehydrogenase (CDH) and glucose dehydrogenase (GDH) on carbon electrodes were investigated using cyclic voltammetry and flow injection amperometry to construct biosensors and biofuel cell (BFC) anodes. WrbA has a catalytic FMN-containing The catalytic and electrochemical properties of tryptophan repressor-binding protein (WrbA), pyranose dehydrogenase (PDH), cellobiose dehydrogenase (CDH) and glucose dehydrogenase (GDH) on carbon electrodes were investigated using cyclic voltammetry and flow injection amperometry to construct biosensors and biofuel cell (BFC) anodes. WrbA has a catalytic FMN-containing domain whereas both PDH and

Natural Products as Leads for Pharmaceutically Active Compounds

In the search for new pharmaceutically active compounds, it is recognized that Nature produces structurally different compounds in a great variety. By having the compounds or extracts tested in defined systems, new drugs or more often leads (a compound that has an interesting but moderate activity) can be found. When a lead is found, structurally similar compounds with modified functional groups a

Transcriptome analysis of a shikimic acid producing strain of Escherichia coli W3110 grown under carbon- and phosphate-limited conditions

Shikimic acid, which is produced in the aromatic amino acid pathway in plants and microorganisms, is an industrially interesting chiral starting material for the synthesis of many chemical substances, e.g. the influenza medicine Tamiflu (R). When produced by genetically modified Escherichia coli it has previously been found that carbon-rich conditions (e.g. phosphate-limitation) favors production

The effect of yoghurt culture on the survival of probiotic bacteria in oat-based, non-dairy products

The survival of the probiotic strains Lactobacillus reuteri ATCC 55730, Lactobacillus acidophilus DSM 20079 and Bifidobacterium bifidum DSM 20456, all of human origin, were investigated in three different oat-based, non-dairy products (Adavena M40, MG20 and G40). The products were fermented by the three strains with and without the presence of a commercial yoghurt culture (V2). Samples were stored

Biomarker detection via lab-on-a-chip integrated immunoaffinity approach for fluorescence and mass spectrometry readout

Popular Abstract in English The human plasma proteome containing disease-correlated protein biomarkers reflects the pathological and physiological changes relating to diseases. These biomarkers are of interest to aid in diagnosis, prognosis and monitoring of diseases such as cancer. Because of the interests in the disease-correlated biomarkers, plasma, although is a complex biological sample, spanThe blood/plasma protein biomarker profile represents the pathological and physiological changes relating to human diseases. However, the plasma proteome reflects a high degree of complexity that results in a challenge for most analytical methods in clinical diagnostics. The focus in this thesis is the development and application of several integrated platforms to detect already established protei

On the QoS tree construction in WiMAX mesh networks based on genetic algorithm approach

We study the influence of tree's depth and nodes' fan-out on the performance of WiMax mesh networks. For a given tree topology, we first analytically obtain per-node delay and per-node throughput. Then among plenty of tree topologies, extractable from a given network's graph, we search feasible trees which fulfil some per-node and network QoS requirements. Since the searching space is potentially

Toxicity and context-dependent repellency of temporarily granted repellents under new biocidal products regulations in South Korea against Drosophila melanogaster (Diptera: Drosophilidae)

In South Korea, control agents for small flying insects are subjected to approval under newly enforced Act on biocidal products by the Ministry of Environment starting from 2019, along with other conventional household insecticides. The present study aimed to evaluate 18 compounds for their toxicity and repellency in various contexts. A tube assay revealed the greatest toxicity of synthetic repell

Follow-up and evaluation of courses and study programmes

In line with the Lund University Strategic Plan, we strive for the highest quality of education, with learning environments that are characterised by both teaching and research, excellent study environment and good learning support. Evaluation of ongoing courses and study programmesEvaluation of ongoing courses and study programmes takes place in several different ways. Regardless of the method, t
