My article deals with the work of the St Joseph Sisters in the Nordic countries, particularly in Denmark and Sweden, from the sisters’ arrival in 1856 to the 1920:ies. These Catholic sisters belonged to a French congregation called "La Congregation des Sœurs de Saint-Joseph de Chambéry", which was founded at the beginning of the nineteenth century and whose motherhouse was in Chambéry in Savoy. Th

Postglacial sedimentary and geomorphological evolution of a small sub-Antarctic fjord landscape, Stromness Bay, South Georgia

A detailed stratigraphical, palaeoecological and geomorphological reconstruction of a fjord head on South Georgia (Husvik, Stromness Bay) is presented. Six sites were chosen to reconstruct the lithostratigraphy of the area by means of coring. A maximum depth of 11m was attained and the sediments encountered vary from coarse gravel over sands to fine silts with, in some cases, intercalated peat lay

Teaching and learning sustainability: An assessment of the curriculum content and structure of sustainability degree programs in higher education

Sustainability degree programs in higher education have proliferated with the emergence of sustainability as a recognized academic field. This study evaluated the curricula of English-language programs granting degrees in sustainability by analyzing 27 bachelor's and 27 master's sustainability programs based on their (1) curricular structure, in terms of the proportion of core versus elective cour

More and more generalists: two decades of changes in the European avifauna

Biotic homogenization (BH) is a process whereby some species (losers) are systematically replaced by others (winners). While this process has been related to the effects of anthropogenic activities, whether and how BH is occurring across regions and the role of native species as a driver of BH has hardly been investigated. Here, we examine the trend in the community specialization index (CSI) for

Soil chemistry of local vegetation gradients in sandy calcareous grasslands

Acidification and N-deposition are continuous processes that alter the composition of plant communities. We investigated vegetation transitions in sandy grasslands and tested two hypotheses: (1) a shift from vegetation dominated by Koeleria glauca to one dominated by Corynephorus canescens is due to acidification and (2) a shift from vegetation dominated by K. glauca to one dominated by Arrhenathe

Fluid Governance : Scalar politics in the South African waterscape

Popular Abstract in English Practices of scaling are an everyday part of governance. To ignore the way scaling is used as an intended or unintended means of securing power is a depoliticizing act. In this thesis, I consider processes of scaling and how they shape water governance in South Africa. Investigating three cases, namely, the De Hoop Dam development, water service delivery in JohannesburgThis thesis offers a critical analysis of the scaling of water governance in South Africa and its implications for water access and allocation. As the complexity and severity of environmental problems increases, there is a growing tendency to look to environmental governance to offer solutions. I contend that water governance, as with all forms of environmental governance, is never an apolitical e

Delayed maximum northern European summer temperatures during the Last Interglacial as a result of Greenland Ice Sheet melt

Here we report a new quantitative mean July temperature reconstruction using non-biting midges (chironomids) from the Danish Last Interglacial (LIG) site Hollerup (spanning 127-116 ka). We find that peak mean July temperatures of 17.5 °C, similar to those of the present day (1961-1990 CE), were reached shortly before the onset of the regional Carpinus pollen zone. Through comparison to terrestrial

Association of umbilical cord venoarterial differences, ΔpH, to morbidity and mortality up to 20 years of follow-up: a cohort study

Introduction: Umbilical cord blood measurement is the gold standard of evaluating neonatal metabolic status at birth. Dual sampling of cord blood vessels is clinical routine, yet the long-term value of venoarterial differences(ΔpH) is undetermined. The objective was to investigate the association of ΔpH, to long-term mortality and morbidity up to 20 years.Material and methods: This was a retrospecIntroductionUmbilical cord blood measurement is the gold standard of evaluating neonatal metabolic status at birth. Managing Ontong Java : Social institutions for production and governance of atoll resources in Solomon Islands

This paper explores the changing nature of social institutions and organizations for resource management on Ontong Java and their central role in maintaining livelihoods. Using detailed field data for three time periods, 1970-72, 1986 and 2006-07, and drawing on earlier secondary data, a longitudinal analysis of changes in governance and livelihoods is undertaken. Increased exploitation of marine

Smart and sustainable cities? : pipedreams, practicalities and possibilities

Smart cities promise to generate economic, social and environmental value through the seamless connection of urban services and infrastructure by digital technologies (Hollands 2008, Viitanen and Kingston 2014), but there is scant evidence concerning their ability to enhance social well-being, build just and equitable communities, reduce resource consumption and waste generation, improve environme

Herbivory makes major contributions to ecosystem carbon and nutrient cycling in tropical forests

The functional role of herbivores in tropical rainforests remains poorly understood. We quantified the magnitude of, and underlying controls on, carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus cycled by invertebrate herbivory along a 2800m elevational gradient in the tropical Andes spanning 12 degrees C mean annual temperature. We find, firstly, that leaf area loss is greater at warmer sites with lower foliar pho

Innovating for an ageing society : insights from two Japanese smart cities

Smart cities are enthusiastically promoted around the world by industry and governments alike as a desirable means to achieve urban sustainability. This chapter contributes empirical evidence on how projects reflecting qualities of a Smart City 2.0 model can play out on the ground. It examines two Japanese smart cities addressing the interconnected challenges of an ageing society and preventative

Reliably predicting pollinator abundance : Challenges of calibrating process-based ecological models

Pollination is a key ecosystem service for global agriculture but evidence of pollinator population declines is growing. Reliable spatial modelling of pollinator abundance is essential if we are to identify areas at risk of pollination service deficit and effectively target resources to support pollinator populations. Many models exist which predict pollinator abundance but few have been calibrate

Since the 1800’s the agriculture has changed and intensified significantly, going from small scale farming to large homogenous arable landscapes with fewer grazing animals, more fertilizers and pesticides. In Sweden, this pattern of intensification has been very distinct, especially in Scania, which today is dominated by plains. This has left substantial changes in the surrounding ecosystems, affe

“The eyes also eat”: The Instagram Experience and Values that construct Destination Image.

Social media has been incorporated increasingly in society day to day lives. The emergence of social media has changed how people interact with and search for information about destinations. This thesis looks into the perspective of Instagram users’ on destination image formation through Instagram posts in accounts that only post about traveling. It researches how people perceive a destination and

Tyvärr kan uttrycket av en främmande gen medföra skador på värdorganismens celluläraHeterologous overexpression of proteins signifies that the encoding gene of a protein in one organism is expressed in another host organism that normally does not have that gene in its genome. In basic biochemical research, this is an important method for studying various protein functions such as activity and interactions in biological processes, as well as obtaining sufficient amounts to determi
