Accelerator Mass Spectrometry

In this overview the technique of accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) and its use are described. AMS is a highly sensitive method of counting atoms. It is used to detect very low concentrations of natural isotopic abundances (typically in the range between 10(-12) and 10(-16)) of both radionuclides and stable nuclides. The main advantages of AMS compared to conventional radiometric methods are the

Maintenance of genetic variation and moderate differentiation among populations under sex-biased dispersal in the common vole Microtus arvalis in patchy habitats

We present a microgeographic analysis of 34 allozyme loci and the control region of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) in the common vole Microtus arvalis (Pallas, 1779), performed to assess the effects of environmental heterogeneity on the distribution of genetic variation among populations in the Biebrza river valley, NE Poland The common vole occurs there in two types of habitat open grassland and pastu

Multi-Switch for Antenna Selection in Massive MIMO

Massive MIMO has been shown to greatly improve spectral and transmit-energy efficiency. When implementing a massive MIMO system, one challenge is high hardware complexity. A solution is to reduce the number of radio frequency (RF) transceiver chains by performing antenna selection. However, a full RF switch that connects the antennas and RF chains can be highly complex and incurs significant loss

Muscle Sizes and Moment Arms of Rotator Cuff Muscles Determined by Magnetic Resonance Imaging

Biomechanical models which require information on, e.g., joint torque and muscle force are useful in the estimation of when and how mechanical overload of the musculoskeletal system may lead to disorders. The aim was to study the reliability and validity of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to quantify muscle sizes and moment arms by MRI and to test selected anthropometric measures as predictors of

Packaging for eco-efficient supply chains - exploring factors in the packaging development process

Purpose: Supply chain efficiency (economic and ecological) is affected by packaging design. The purpose of this research is to investigate how integrated approaches aiming for ecoefficient supply chains are used in packaging development processes and how a set of preselected factors influences the adaption of more or less integrated approaches at companies. Design/methodology/approach: The researc

Analysis and quantification of parabens in cosmetic products by utilizing hollow fibre-supported liquid membrane and high performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet detection

A simple and direct method based on hollow fibresupported liquid membrane (HFSLM) extraction and liquid chromatography equipped with a UV detector was developed for analysis and quantification of parabens in cosmetic products. The parabens analysed included methyl, ethyl, propyl, isobutyl and butyl paraben. The HFSLM extraction was carried out by employing di-n-hexyl ether as organic liquid that w

Deciphering the 8q24.21 association for glioma

We have previously identified tagSNPs at 8q24.21 influencing glioma risk. We have sought to fine-map the location of the functional basis of this association using data from four genome-wide association studies, comprising a total of 4147 glioma cases and 7435 controls. To improve marker density across the 700 kb region, we imputed genotypes using 1000 Genomes Project data and high-coverage sequen

Techno-economic assessment of nonfossil ammonia production

The production of nitrogen fertilizers are almost exclusively based on fossil feedstocks such as natural gas and coal. Nitrogen fertilizers are a necessity to maintain the high agricultural production that the world's population currently demands. Ammonia produced from nonfossil-based feedstocks would enable renewable production of ammonia. Renewable feedstocks are one thing, but perhaps even more

Characterization of germline mutations of MLH1 and MSH2 in unrelated south American suspected Lynch syndrome individuals

Lynch syndrome (LS) is an autosomal dominant syndrome that predisposes individuals to development of cancers early in life. These cancers are mainly the following: colorectal, endometrial, ovarian, small intestine, stomach and urinary tract cancers. LS is caused by germline mutations in DNA mismatch repair genes (MMR), mostly MLH1 and MSH2, which are responsible for more than 85% of known germline

Effect of an external magnetic field on the determination of E1M1 two-photon decay rates in Be-like ions

In this work we report on ab initio theoretical results for the magnetic-field-induced 2s 2p P-3(0) -> 2s(2) S-1(0) E1 transition for ions in the beryllium isoelectronic sequence between Z = 5 and 92. It has been proposed that the rate of the E1M1 two-photon transition 2s 2p P-3(0) -> 2s(2) S-1(0) can be extracted from the lifetime of the P-3(0) state in Be-like ions with zero nuclear spin by empl

Aligning Nanodiscs at the Air-Water Interface, a Neutron Reflectivity Study

Nanodiscs are self-assembled nanostructures composed of a belt protein and a small patch of lipid bilayer, which can solubilize membrane proteins in a lipid bilayer environment. We present a method for the alignment of a well-defined two-dimensional layer of nanodiscs at the air-water interface by careful design of an insoluble surfactant monolayer at the surface. We used neutron reflectivity to d

Putative role of polymorphisms in UCP1-3 genes for diabetic nephropathy.

Increased production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) has been suggested as a cause of diabetic complications. Uncoupling proteins (UCPs) have been ascribed a role in reducing the formation of ROS, and genetic variation in genes encoding for UCPs could thus be putative candidate genes for diabetic nephropathy. To test this hypothesis we searched for association between the A→G (−3862) variant in U

CNS disease in younger patients with aggressive B-cell lymphoma: an analysis of patients treated on the Mabthera International Trial and trials of the German High-Grade Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma Study Group

To describe incidence, risk factors, and influence of treatment on occurrence of central nervous system (CNS) relapse or progression in younger patients with aggressive B-cell lymphoma. We analyzed 2210 patients with aggressive B-cell lymphoma treated on various studies for CNS relapse/progression. Treatment consisted of CHOP (cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine, and prednisone) +/- etoposi

Natural course of knee osteoarthritis in middle-aged subjects with knee pain: 12-year follow-up using clinical and radiographic criteria

Objective: To explore the natural course of knee osteoarthritis (OA) in a middle-aged population with chronic knee pain. Methods: A population-based sample of 143 subjects (mean age 45 (range 35-54), 44% women) with knee pain (>3 months) at inclusion was studied. Weightbearing posteroanterior tibiofemoral (TF) radiographs were obtained at baseline and 12 years later, and classified according to Ke

Concepts of functioning and health important to people with systemic sclerosis: a qualitative study in four European countries

Objective To describe the experiences of people with systemic sclerosis (SSc) in different European countries of functioning and health and to link these experiences to the WHO International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) to develop a common understanding from a bio-psycho-social perspective. Method A qualitative multicentre study with focus-group interviews was perform

Oxidative DNA damage in human sperm influences time to pregnancy

BACKGROUND: Oxidative stress and related DNA damage in human sperm may be important for fecundity and pregnancy outcome. METHODS: We studied the level of oxidative DNA damage in terms of 7-hydro-8-oxo-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-oxodG) in sperm DNA among 225 first-pregnancy planners. Over the six menstrual cycle follow-up time, after cessation of contraception, 135 pregnancies were conceived. RESULTS: Th
