Ungefär 10% av kvinnorna i den svenska befolkningen får någon gång under livet denna sjukdom. Förekomst av sjukdomen i familjen är en av de starkaste riskfaktorerna för att en kvinna ska utveckla bröstcancer, och i 5-10% av A positive family history of breast cancer (BC) is one of the strongest predictors of the disease. Two major BC susceptibility genes, BRCA1 and BRCA2 were identified about a decade ago.
