Coupling coefficient distribution in the doorway mechanism

In many-body and other systems, the physics situation often allows one to interpret certain, distinct states by means of a simple picture. In this interpretation, the distinct states are not eigenstates of the full Hamiltonian. Hence, there is an interaction that makes the distinct states act as doorways into background states which are modeled statistically. The crucial quantities are the overlap

Electrocatalytic oxidation of NADH using a pencil graphite electrode modified with quercetin

In the present study, the electrocatalytic oxidation of reduced beta nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) was investigated using a pencil graphite electrode modified with quercetin (PGE/QH(2)). The PGE/QH(2) was prepared through two steps: (i) the pre-treatment of PGE at 1.40V vs. Ag vertical bar AgCl vertical bar KCl(sat.) in pH 7.0 phosphate buffer containing 0.1 M KCl for 60 s and (ii) adso

Photoinduced Charge Carrier Dynamics of Zn-Porphyrin-TiO(2) Electrodes: The Key Role of Charge Recombination for Solar Cell Performance (†).

Time resolved absorption spectroscopy has been used to study photoinduced electron injection and charge recombination in Zn-porphyrin sensitized nanostructured TiO(2) electrodes. The electron transfer dynamics is correlated to the performance of dye sensitized solar cells based on the same electrodes. We find that the dye/semiconductor binding can be described with a heterogeneous geometry where t

Towards smart self-assembly of colloidal silica particles through diblock copolymer crystallization

An innovative associative strategy, crystallization-driven self-assembly, is discussed for hybrid inorganicorganic materials. We report the use of a semicrystalline poly(butadiene)-b-poly(ethylene oxide)(PB-b-PEO) diblock copolymer (BCP) that self-assembles with silica nanoparticles (NPs) in a selective solvent. In ethanol, at 60 degrees C, that is above the melting temperature T-m of the PEO bloc

Exciton-vibrational coupling in molecular aggregates: Electronic versus vibronic dimer

The influence of exciton-vibrational coupling on the energy level structure, oscillator strength, and relaxation dynamics is investigated for two different excitonic dimer models. As compared with a purely electronic dimer, the inclusion of local vibrational modes within a vibronic dimer gives rise to a complex energy level structure including avoided crossings and changes of the nature of the exc

Polarization single complex imaging of circular photosynthetic antenna.

Single complex fluorescence polarization spectroscopy is applied to study the peripheral light harvesting antenna (LH2) from photosynthetic purple bacterium Rhodopseudomonas (Rps.) acidophila. The measured two-dimensional excitation-emission polarization plots are used to construct geometric representation for the absorbing B800 and emitting B850 as ellipses. The shape and orientation of the ellip

The Causative Classification of Stroke system An international reliability and optimization study

Background: Valid and reliable ischemic stroke subtype determination is crucial for well-powered multicenter studies. The Causative Classification of Stroke System (CCS, available at http://ccs.mgh.harvard.edu) is a computerized, evidence-based algorithm that provides both causative and phenotypic stroke subtypes in a rule-based manner. We determined whether CCS demonstrates high interrater reliab

Ultrafast Terahertz Photoconductivity of Bulk Heterojunction Materials Reveals High Carrier Mobility up to Nanosecond Time Scale.

The few-picosecond (ps) decay of terahertz (THz) photoconductivity typically observed for conjugated polymer:fullerene blends (at excitation fluencies ∼10(15) photons/cm(2) per pulse) is shown to be a result of charge pair annihilation for two polymer:PCBM blends. At a factor of 100 lower excitation density, the THz decay is in the hundreds of ps time scale, implying that very high carrier mobilit

Geminate Charge Recombination in Polymer/Fullerene Bulk Heterojunction Films and Implications for Solar Cell Function.

We have studied the influence of three different fullerene derivatives on the charge generation and recombination dynamics of polymer/fullerene bulk heterojunction (BHJ) solar cell blends. Charge generation in APFO3/[70]PCBM and APFO3/[60]PCBM is very similar and somewhat slower than charge generation in APFO3/[70]BTPF. This difference qualitatively matches the trend in free energy change of elect

Origin of Long-Lived Coherences in Light-Harvesting Complexes

A vibronic exciton model is applied to explain the long-lived oscillatory features in the two-dimensional (2D) electronic spectra of the Fenna-Matthews-Olson (FMO) complex. Using experimentally determined parameters and uncorrelated site energy fluctuations, the model predicts oscillations with dephasing times of 1.3 ps at 77 K, which is in a good agreement with the experimental results. These lon

Confinement of linear polymers, surfactants, and particles between interfaces

The review addresses the effect of geometrical confinement on the structure formation of colloidal dispersions like particle suspensions, (non)micellar surfactant solutions, polyelectrolyte solutions and mixed dispersions. The dispersions are entrapped either between two fluid interfaces (foam film) in a Thin Film Pressure Balance (TFPB) or between two solid interfaces in a Colloidal Probe Atomic

Palladium versus Platinum: The Metal in the Catalytic Center of a Molecular Photocatalyst Determines the Mechanism of the Hydrogen Production with Visible Light

To develop highly efficient molecular photocatalysts for visible light-driven hydrogen production, a thorough understanding of the photophysical and chemical processes in the photocatalyst is of vital importance. In this context, in situ X-ray absorption spectroscopic (XAS) investigations show that the nature of the catalytically active metal center in a (N boolean AND N)MCl2 (M=Pd or Pt) coordina

Wigner-localized states in spin-orbit-coupled bosonic ultracold atoms with dipolar interaction

We investigate the occurence of Wigner-localization phenomena in bosonic dipolar ultracold few-body systems with Rashba-like spin-orbit coupling. We show that the latter strongly enhances the effects of the dipole-dipole interactions, allowing to reach the Wigner-localized regime for strengths of the dipole moment much smaller than those necessary in the spin-orbit-free case.

On the Ability of PAMAM Dendrimers and Dendrimer/DNA Aggregates To Penetrate POPC Model Biomembranes.

Poly(amido amine) (PAMAM) dendrimers have previously been shown, as cationic condensing agents of DNA, to have high potential for nonviral gene delivery. This study addresses two key issues for gene delivery: the interaction of the biomembrane with (i) the condensing agent (the cationic PAMAM dendrimer) and (ii) the corresponding dendrimer/DNA aggregate. Using in situ null ellipsometry and neutron

Prevalence, incidence and progression of hand osteoarthritis in the general population: the Framingham Osteoarthritis Study

Objectives To describe the prevalence and longitudinal course of radiographic, erosive and symptomatic hand osteoarthritis (HOA) in the general population. Methods Framingham osteoarthritis (OA) study participants obtained bilateral hand radiographs at baseline and 9-year follow-up. The authors defined radiographic HOA at joint level as Kellgren-Lawrence grade (KLG)>= 2, erosive HOA as KLG >= 2 pl

Free-carrier absorption in quantum cascade structures

We show that the free-carrier absorption in quantum cascade lasers (QCLs) is very small and radically different from the classical Drude result due to the orthogonality between the direction of the carrier free motion and the electric field of the laser emission. A quantum mechanical calculation of the free-carrier absorption and intersubband oblique absorption induced by interface defects, Coulom
