Microsoft Word - FinalGenderAndProgramming.doc

Microsoft Word - FinalGenderAndProgramming.doc Abstract—Our study highlights the effects of gender-related learning styles on a computer programming course at introductory level of engineering education. It was triggered by the observation of statistically relevant under-achievements among female students over the years. We try to identify concrete differences in motivation/learning styles between

Factoring out glue-code in systems of IoT devices: the PalCom architecture model

We present an architecture for distributed, heterogeneous systems where there is a clear separation of concerns for Computation, Coordination, Configuration. The computation part is often implemented in traditional programming code, and packaged as services. The other concerns might need to be addressed much later and by other people in separate organisations, or even by end users. In this paper w

BVI Photometry and the Red Giant Branch Luminosity Function of M15

We present new BVI photometry containing 40,000 stars of the Galactic globular cluster M15 (NGC 7078) covering a 25×25 arcminute area centered on the cluster with a magnitude range from the tip of the Red Giant Branch to three magnitudes below the main sequence turn-off. Using α -enhanced Dartmouth Stellar Evolution Program models, we find an age of 13.0 ± 1.0 Gyr and distance modulus of (m−M)V=15

Theoretical aspects of three-photon two-color ionization of xenon through ac-stark-shifted resonant rydberg states

We present a theoretical analysis of a recent experiment [J. Opt. Soc. Am. B 6, 1513 (1989)] on two-color threephotonionization of Xe through resonant even-parity Rydberg states. We calculate second-order ac-Stark shifts, two-photon Rabi frequencies, and ionization widths by using wave functions obtained from a multichannel quantum-defect-theory analysis of the Rydberg series in Xe. We perform a d

John's Gospel: A Two-Level Drama?

During the past decades, scholars have attempted to reconstruct the history of a Johannine community through reading John's Gospel as a two-level drama. According to this understanding, the Gospel relates events that took place in the community after Jesus' earthly ministry, while these events are presented as a story about Jesus himself. The present essay evaluates this allegorical reading of the

Tongue body movements in speech: Straight or curved paths?

This paper examines tongue body movements between two vowels with particular emphasis on the shape of the movement paths. Earlier work on tongue movements in speech has mostly focused on movements for consonants. The movements analyzed are from the first to the second vowel in a sequence of vowel-bilabial consonant-vowel. Native speakers of Japanese and Italian served as subjects. The linguistic m

I See that from Both Sides Now: On the Intricate Relation between Dialogue and Conversion

There seems to be a double track in the relationship to the other. On the one hand, there is dialogue—an attitude of seeing the other as she is. On the other hand, we all seem to have some kind of worldview implying that My Way is the Best Way, at least in a certain respect—there seem to be certain points where I would like other people to see things in the same way as I do. I argue that these two

Alphabetic Excavations : Johannes Bureus and the Runic Kabbalah

Around the turn of the 17th century, the Swedish antiquary and mystic Johannes Bureus (1568–1652) claimed to have discovered the primordial theology and science of his Scandinavian ancestors encoded in their system of writing, the runic alphabet, inspired in large part by earlier Christian interpretations of the Kabbalah. In the leadup to the Swedish intervention in the Thirty Years’ War, he viewe

Equivalence and polyvalence : A case for the stratification of semantics

The article presents a semantic theory suggesting that equivalence and polyvalence are closely connected phenomena. The connection between them is utilised by making equivalence the basis of an argument for polyvalence within semantics, or in other terms, for a stratified semantics encompassing two levels of description. This argument from equivalence lends new support to frameworks assuming a str

Drawing on contemporary publications in German and Swedish/Scandinavian journals and biographies as well as conference proceedings of the German Society of Urology (DGU), this paper examines the Swedish impressions of the 1929 DGU meeting in Munich. It focusses on why the Swedish delegates visited the congress and how they evaluated their congress experiences for their Scandinavian peers. Finally,

The roles of response expectancies, basline experiences, and hypnotizability in spontaneous hypnotic experiences

This study evaluated factors underlying individual differencesin spontaneous (unsuggested) experiences during hypnosis.Participants varying in hypnotizability (low, medium, and high) completeda questionnaire about various dimensions of consciousness theywould expect to experience at the “deepest level of hypnosis” (expectancy),an eyes-closed resting condition (baseline), and their actualexperience
