Corporate Migration and its Implications for the Protection of Creditors - Recent Developments in the Case Law of the European Court of Justice

This thesis addresses the correlation between creditor protection and thecross-border seat transfer of companies in the light of the case law of the European Court of Justice concerning the freedom of establishment of undertakings. After the restrictive outcome of Daily Mail, the judgment of the European Court of Justice in Centros took the legal community by surprise. The following cases of Übers

The Lunar Eclipse in Mexico City on 18 November 1584 : A Missed Opportunity

The astronomical observations and calculations made at the lunar eclipse of 18 November 1584 in Mexico are analyzed with emphasis on the methods and calculations used. The observations were intended to determine the geographical longitude difference between Mexico City and Seville in Spain but due to several errors, the most important one being using the wrong time for the end of the eclipse in Se

Solar and Umbral Sizes in the Al-Khwārizmī and Peurbach Eclipse Tables

We analyze and compare the structure of two tables, the tables of al-Khwārizmī and George Peurbach’s Tabulae Eclypsium, looking at the syzygy angular velocities of the Sun and the Moon and the angular radii of the Sun, the Moon and the lunar eclipse umbra. We show that part of the underlying structure has a mediaeval Indian origin. Finally, we compare recomputed tables with Peurbach’s tables.

Native-immigrant differences in the effect of children on the gender pay gap

This paper explores gender differences in the career paths of immigrant and native parents before and after childbirth using Spanish administrative data and an event study specification. I find an important gender pay gap emerging after childbirth for both immigrants and natives, and that the drivers of these gender pay gaps strongly differ between natives and immigrants: while children generate h

Rule of Law with Chinese Characteristics : A Contested Landscape

The concept of the rule of law has been a central issue in China for the past two decades, gaining even greater prominence under Xi Jinping’s leadership. This article examines the development of the rule of law in China, drawing on insights from local Chinese scholarship as a vital source for understanding the situation. By analyzing the most cited research articles in the China National Knowledge

Metal ion coordination at the water-manganite (gamma-MnOOH) interface II. An EXAFS study of zinc(II)

The local structure of Zn(II) adsorbed at the water-manganite (gamma-MnOOH) interface has been investigated by extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy. Adsorption experiments were carried out within the pH range 6.17-9.87 and surface coverages of 0.9 to 9.7 mu mol/m(2).Zn(II) coordination was observed to change from six to four as pH was increased. This was indicated by a cha

Testing for error correction in panel data

This paper proposes new error correction-based cointegration tests for panel data. The limiting distributions of the tests are derived and critical values provided. Our simulation results suggest that the tests have good small-sample properties with small size distortions and high power relative to other popular residual-based panel cointegration tests. In our empirical application, we present evi

Comparison of sheet-metal-forming simulation and try-out tools in the design of a forming tool

Today, sheet-metal-forming simulation is a powerful technique for predicting the formability of automotive parts. Compared with traditional methods such as the use of try-out tools, sheet-metal-forming simulation enables a significant increase in the number of tool designs that can be tested before hard tools are manufactured. Another advantage of sheet-metal-forming simulation is the possibility

Data dependent endogeneity correction in cointegrated panels

This paper examines the small-sample performance of several information based criteria that can be employed to facilitate data dependent endogeneity correction in estimation of cointegrated panel regressions. The Monte Carlo evidence suggests that the criteria generally perform well but that there are differences of practical importance. In particular, the evidence suggests that, although the esti

Government regulation on the flourishing network audio-visual entrepreneurship: experience from the administration in Beijing

The network audio-visual entrepreneurship in China has achieved great progress and engendered conspicuous negative externalities in the early development stage. Few studies have investigated how media entrepreneurship coordinates with government regulation and the influence of government regulation on media entrepreneurship. This study aims at investigating government regulation on the flourishing

Massive intein content in Anaeramoeba reveals aspects of intein mobility in eukaryotes

Inteins are self-splicing protein elements found in viruses and all three domains of life. How the DNA encoding these selfish elements spreads within and between genomes is poorly understood, particularly in eukaryotes where inteins are scarce. Here, we show that the nuclear genomes of three strains of Anaeramoeba encode between 45 and 103 inteins, in stark contrast to four found in the most inte
