AIB1 is a predictive factor for tamoxifen response in premenopausal women.
BACKGROUND: Clinical trials implicate the estrogen receptor (ER) coactivator amplified in breast cancer 1 (AIB1) to be a prognostic and a treatment-predictive factor, although results are not unanimous. We have further investigated this using a controlled randomised trial of tamoxifen versus control. Materials and methods: A total of 564 premenopausal women were entered into a randomised study ind
Uromodulin gene variant is associated with type 2 diabetic nephropathy.
AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: About 35% of individuals with type 2 diabetes develop persistent albuminuria, lose renal function, and are at increased risk for microvascular complications like diabetic nephropathy. Recent genome-wide association studies have identified the uromodulin locus (UMOD), encoding the most common protein in human urine to be associated with hypertension and also with chronic kidney dis
Cystatin C, a marker for successful aging and glomerular filtration rate, is not influenced by inflammation.
Abstract Background. The plasma level of cystatin C is a better marker than plasma creatinine for successful aging. It has been assumed that the advantage of cystatin C is not only due to it being a better marker for glomerular filtration rate (GFR) than creatinine, but also because an inflammatory state of a patient induces a raised cystatin C level. However, the observations of an association be
Polymorphisms in glutathione-related genes affect methylmercury retention.
Methylmercury is eliminated from the human body as glutathione (GSH) conjugates. GSH production is mediated by glutamyl-cysteine ligase (GCL) and conjugation by glutathione S-transferases (GST). In this study, the authors tested whether polymorphisms in GCL and GST genes modify methylmercury retention. Erythrocyte mercury concentration (EryHg), plasma polyunsaturated fatty acids (PPUFA), and genot
Physical limitations on antennas of arbitrary shape
In this paper, physical limitations on bandwidth, realized gain, Q-factor and directivity are derived for antennas of arbitrary shape. The product of bandwidth and realizable gain is shown to be bounded from above by the eigenvalues of the long-wavelength, high-contrast polarizability dyadics. These dyadics are proportional to the antenna volume and are easily determined for an arbitrary geometry.
Outcomes of activity-based assessment (BIA) compared with standard assessment in occupational therapy.
This study was aimed at investigating the outcomes of an activity-based assessment (BIA) compared with standard assessment (SA) for evaluating clients undergoing psychiatric occupational therapy. Patients admitted to a psychiatric occupational therapy unit were randomized into the BIA or the SA assessment. The outcome indicators were (a) clients' satisfaction with the occupational therapy during t
Missnöjda medborgares säkerhetsventil - en studie av överklagade detaljplaner
The primary aim of this study is to view the meaning, the function and the consequences of appealed community plans. A overview of the Swedish regulations has been made in addition to an empirical study of 63 appealed community plans in two municipalities in the south of Sweden, during the years 1996-2000. The study shows that approximately 25% of all the plans made have been the object for appeal
The Characteristics of Local Support Systems, and the Roles of Professionals, in Supporting Families where a Mother has an Intellectual Disability.
There might be a need for support for families where the mother has an intellectual disability, in order to counteract the effects of potential parental inadequacy and other detrimental aspects of the family situation. The purpose of this study was to describe how professionals characterized such support and the collaboration required.
Analysis of giant cell tumour of bone cells for Noonan syndrome/Cherubism-related mutations.
Background: Giant cell tumour of bone (GCTB) is an osteolytic tumour which contains numerous osteoclast-like giant cells and a proliferation of mononuclear stromal cells (MSC). Giant cell-rich osteolytic lesions can also develop in the jaw bones in Noonan syndrome, a cherubism-like developmental abnormality that is transmitted in an autosomal dominant fashion, often because of mutation in the PTP
Treatment and outcome in pancreatic pseudocysts
Objective. Pancreatic pseudocyst is a common complication of both acute and chronic pancreatitis. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the efficacy and complications of different treatment regimens. Material and methods. All patients >= 15 years of age admitted to Lund University Hospital from 1994 to 2003 with pancreatic pseudocysts were analysed retrospectively. Pseudocysts were defined
A factor analytic approach to symptom patterns in dementia.
Previous publications have shown a high diagnostic sensitivity and specificity of three short clinical rating scales for Alzheimer's disease (AD), frontotemporal dementia (FTD), and vascular dementia (VaD) validated against neuropathological (NP) diagnoses. In this study, the aim was to perform an exploratory factor analysis of the items in these clinical rating scales. The study included 190 pati
The (in)famous GWAS P-value threshold revisited and updated for low-frequency variants.
Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have long relied on proposed statistical significance thresholds to be able to differentiate true positives from false positives. Although the genome-wide significance P-value threshold of 5 × 10(-8) has become a standard for common-variant GWAS, it has not been updated to cope with the lower allele frequency spectrum used in many recent array-based GWAS stud
Deaf teenagers with cochlear implants in conversation with hearing peers.
Background: This study investigates the use of requests for clarification in conversations between teenagers with a cochlear implant (CI) and hearing peers. So far very few studies have focused on conversational abilities in children with CI. Aims: The aim was to explore co-construction of dialogue in a referential communication task and the participation of the teenagers with CI in comparison wit
Resource Use in Patients with Psoriasis After the Introduction of Biologics in Sweden
The introduction of biologics has changed treatment patterns as well as costs in patients with psoriasis. This study was performed to estimate direct and indirect costs of the psoriasis population in Sweden, and to analyse changes in costs between 2006 and 2009. The study population was identified in national registers. Direct costs included health care visits with primary psoriasis diagnoses in s
Online registry of genetic and clinical immunodeficiency diagnostic laboratories, IDdiagnostics.
Primary immunodeficiencies (IDs) are caused by inherited genetic defects leading to intrinsic defects in cells of the immune systems. Most IDs are rare diseases and can be difficult to diagnose because similar symptoms characterize several disorders. Mutation detection is the most reliable method in such cases. These tests are not available at most centers and physicians can have difficulties in f
MIRD Pamphlet No. 23: Quantitative SPECT for Patient-Specific 3-Dimensional Dosimetry in Internal Radionuclide Therapy
In internal radionuclide therapy, a growing interest in voxel-level estimates of tissue-absorbed dose has been driven by the desire to report radiobiologic quantities that account for the biologic consequences of both spatial and temporal nonuniformities in these dose estimates. This report presents an overview of 3-dimensional SPECT methods and requirements for internal dosimetry at both regional
Unthreaded Fixation of Slipped Capital Femoral Epiphysis Leads to Continued Growth of the Femoral Neck.
The optimal treatment for slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) remains controversial. In Sweden, the standard treatment is unthreaded fixation over the physis, with the purpose to permit continued growth of the femoral neck. The aim of the present study was to verify and quantify longitudinal growth of the femoral neck after in situ pinning with the Hansson hook-pin.
CSF Mg and Ca as diagnostic markers for dementia with Lewy bodies.
Accumulating evidence implicates a role for altered metal homeostasis in the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, few investigations have addressed this issue in dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB). The aim of the present study was to investigate metal concentrations in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and plasma from patients with DLB and other neurodegenera
