Stroke unit care revisited: who benefits the most? A cohort study of 105 043 patients in Riks-Stroke, the Swedish Stroke Register

Background: Treatment at stroke units is superior to treatment at other types of wards. The objective of the present study is to determine the effect size of stroke unit care in subgroups of patients with stroke. This information might be useful in a formal priority setting. Methods: All acute strokes reported to the Swedish Stroke Register from 2001 through 2005 were followed until January 2007.

Does job strain mediate the effect of Socio-economic Group on smoking behaviour? The impact of different health policies in Denmark and Sweden

Aims: The aim was to compare the impact of socioeconomic groups (SEG) on the risk of being a daily smoker or quitter, and to investigate whether the potentially mediating effect of psychosocial working conditions was similar in the Danish and the Swedish populations. Methods: The study populations consisted of 10,049 employed participants, aged 18-64 years, 51% women, randomly selected from the ge

Parental Gender Equality and Use of Oral Contraceptives Among Young Women: A Longitudinal, Population-based Study in Sweden

Background: Little is known about how parental gender equality early in their children lives can influence daughters’ decision to use contraceptive pills. Aim:The study aimed at exploring whether maternal working time and paternity leave in Sweden during the first two years of their daughters’ lives is associated with the use of oral contraceptives when they are adolescents or young adults. Materi

Helicobacter pylori : Is it Transmitted Through Faecal-oral or Oral-oral Route?

The association of Helicobacter pylori with gastroduodenal diseases is well established. The mode of transmission of the organism is still unclear, although the faecal-oral route has been proposed. H. pylori has been detected in gastric antrum, dental plaques, faeces and water. In the light of these studies we attempted to detect H. pylori in antral biopsies, dental plaques, and stool specimens of

Differential dependence of stretch and shear stress signaling on caveolin-1 in the vascular wall

The role of caveolae in stretch- vs. flow-induced vascular responses was investigated using caveolin-1 deficient (KO) mice. Portal veins were stretched longitudinally for 5 min (acute) or 72 h (organ culture). Basal ERK1/2 and Akt phosphorylation were increased in organ-cultured KO veins, as were protein synthesis and vessel wall cross-section. Stretch stimulated acute phosphorylation of ERK1/2 an

Modelling of non-linear switching effects in piezoceramics: a three-dimensional polygonal finite-element-based approach applied to oligo-crystals

A polygonal finite-element formulation is applied to solve electromechanically coupled inhomogeneous boundary value problems for polycrystalline materials. Each grain is discretised by one single polygonal finite element, which allows the efficient simulation of general boundary value problems which still resolves individual grains in space. The constitutive model proposed for switching in piezoce

Hidden-sector photon and axion searches using photonic band gap structures

Many proposed extensions of the standard model of particle physics predict the existence of weakly interacting sub-eV particles (WISPs) such as hidden-sector photons and axions, which are also of interest as dark matter candidates. In this paper we propose a novel experimental approach in which microwave photonic lattice structures form part of a 'light shining through the wall'-type experiment to

Prostate cancer incidence and survival in immigrants to Sweden

The large international variation in the incidence of prostate cancer (PC) is well known but the underlying reasons are not understood. We want to compare PC incidence and survival among immigrants to Sweden in order to explain the international differences. Cancer data were obtained from the Swedish Cancer Registry. Standardized incidence ratios (SIRs) were calculated for PC in first-degree immig

Reaction of [Ru-3(CO)(12)] with tri(2-furyl)phosphine: Di- and tri-substituted triruthenium and phosphido-bridged diruthenium complexes

Reaction of [Ru-3(CO)(12)] with tri(2-furyl)phosphine, P(C4H3O)(3), at 40 degrees C in the presence of a catalytic amount of Na[Ph2CO] furnishes two triruthenium complexes [Ru-3(CO)(10){P(C4H3O)(3)}(2)] (1) and [Ru-3(CO)(9){P(C4H3O)(3)}(3)] (2) with the ligand coordinated through the phosphorus atom. Treatment of 1 and 2 with Me3NO at 40 degrees C affords the dinuclear phosphido-bridged complexes

Maternal use of antihypertensive drugs in early pregnancy and delivery outcome, notably the presence of congenital heart defects in the infants

Purpose To investigate the association between maternal use of antihypertensives in early pregnancy and delivery outcome, notably infant congenital malformations. Methods A cohort study of 1,418 women who had used antihypertensive drugs in early pregnancy but had no diabetes diagnosis were identified from the Swedish Medical Birth Register. Results There was an excess risk for placental abruption,

Developing the PEER-U scale to measure parents' expectations, experiences and reactions to routine ultrasound examinations during pregnancy

The aim of this study was to develop and test a specific questionnaire to measure parents' expectations, experiences and reactions in connection with routine ultrasound examinations during pregnancy. A questionnaire consisting of ultrasound specific questions was constructed in two parts, one to be used before and one after the examination. It was examined for face validity and a pilot study was t

Mobility and satisfaction with lower-limb prostheses and orthoses among users in Sierra Leone: A cross-sectional study

Objectives: To investigate patients' mobility and satisfaction with their lower-limb prosthetic or orthotic device and related service delivery in Sierra Leone; to compare groups of patients regarding type and level of assistive device, gender, area of residence, income; and to identify factors associated with satisfaction with the assistive device and service. Methods: A total of 139 patients ans

Field-free molecular alignment probed by the free electron laser in Hamburg (FLASH)

High flux extreme ultraviolet (XUV) sources like the free electron laser (FEL) in Hamburg (FLASH) offer the possibility of diffractive imaging of small objects. Irrespective of whether the diffraction is based on the detection of photons or photoelectrons, it is required that the measurement is done in the reference frame of the molecule meaning that, for a sample of several molecules, it is neces

Mapping the d-d Excited-State Manifolds of Transition Metal beta-Diiminato-Imido Complexes. Comparison of Density Functional Theory and CASPT2 Energetics

Trigonal-planar, middle transition metal diiminato-imido complexes do not exhibit high-spin states, as might be naively expected on the basis of their low coordination numbers. Instead, the known Fe(III), Co(III), and Ni(III) complexes exhibit S = (3)/(2), S = 0, and S = (1)/(2), ground states, respectively. Kohn-Sham DFT calculations have provided a basic molecular orbital picture of these compou

Reliability study of friction stir welded copper canisters containing Sweden's nuclear waste

The plan for the final disposal of spent fuel front Swedish nuclear power plants is to place it in copper canisters that are sealed and stored in a deep repository. The canisters will be sealed by friction stir welding (FSW) and the reliability of this process has now been evaluated. The reliability study was performed in three steps: first an optimization experiment to identify optimal process se

The impact of signal crayfish (Pacifastacus leniusculus) on the recruitment of salmonid fish in a headwater stream in Yorkshire, England

Signal crayfish (Pacifastacus leniusculus) have become increasingly widespread in rivers in Great Britain since their introduction in the late 1970s, causing extensive losses of indigenous white-clawed crayfish and negative impacts on communities of aquatic plants, invertebrates and benthic fish. Angling interests are increasingly concerned about possible impacts of signal crayfish on brown trout,

Antenna Bandwidth Optimization with Single Frequency Simulation

A method to compute antenna Q using an electromagnetic simulation at a single frequency is described. This method can easily be integrated into global optimization algorithms. In this way the optimization time of some antenna parameters, e.g., bandwidth, may be significantly reduced. The method is validated by direct comparison with the physical bound of the analyzed structure. Numerical examples

Living with cancer - Impact on cancer patient and partner

The overall aim of this thesis was to study different aspects of health on a population based level for persons with four common forms of cancer and their partners, and from an individual level to explore the impact on the daily life situation of living with advanced colorectal cancer for persons with cancer and their partners. Population based register data was used to compare different aspects o

Single-shot holography using high-order harmonics

This work demonstrates single-shot holography with ultrashort XUV pulses. The pulses are generated by high-harmonic generation in an Ar gas cell and focused to produce a strongly divergent reference beam suitable for in-line holography of micrometer size objects. The achieved intensity of the high-order harmonics in the XUV regime is sufficient for single-shot holography with good signal-to-noise
