Comet Assay Profiling of FLASH-Induced Damage : Mechanistic Insights into the Effects of FLASH Irradiation

Numerous studies have demonstrated the normal tissue-sparing effects of ultra-high dose rate ‘FLASH’ irradiation in vivo, with an associated reduction in damage burden being reported in vitro. Towards this, two key radiochemical mechanisms have been proposed: radical–radical recombination (RRR) and transient oxygen depletion (TOD), with both being proposed to lead to reduced levels of induced dama

Covid-19 vaccine hesitancy : A mixed methods investigation of matters of life and death

In this article, hesitancy towards COVID-19 vaccinations is investigated as a phenomenon touching upon existential questions. We argue that it encompasses ideas of illness and health, and also of dying and fear of suffering. Building on a specific strand within anti-vaccination studies, we conjecture that vaccine hesitancy is, to some extent, reasonable, and that this scepticism should be studied

An investigation into the characteristics of reactive silicon pools of coastal marine sediments

Many studies use traditional alkaline leach digestions to quantify biogenic silica (bSiO2) in sediments. Studies from river-plume systems demonstrate this methodology precludes information on other operational Si reactive pools, missing potentially valuable information on early diagenetic products. We build on previous studies by broadly examining the reactive Si pools in Mississippi River plume-i

Determinants of Severe Nocturnal Hypoxemia in Adults with Chronic Thromboembolic Pulmonary Hypertension and Sleep-Related Breathing Disorders

Objectives: We aimed to investigate the occurrence of sleep-related breathing disorders (SRBDs) in patients with chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH) and addressed the effect of pulmonary hemodynamics and SRBD indices on the severity of nocturnal hypoxemia (NH). Methods: An overnight polysomnography (PSG) was conducted in patients with CTEPH, who were eligible for pulmonary endart

A new silicon phosphide, Si12P5 : Formation conditions, structure, and properties

The formation conditions, structure, and properties of the recently discovered phosphide, Si12P5 (initially assigned Si7P3), have been studied using x-ray diffraction, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, photospectrometry, and a four-point probe. The phosphide formed in amorphous Si-P alloy thin films with 30, 35 and 44 at. % P after annealing at 1000°C for 30 min. During annealing a

A story of promising regime of concurrent Electro-Enhanced Chemo Radiation Immune Tumour-therapy

Cardiovascular dysautonomia in postacute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has led to a worldwide pandemic that continues to transform but will not go away. Cardiovascular dysautonomia in postacute sequelae of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 infection has led to persistent symptoms in a large number of patients. Here, we define the condition and its associated symptoms as well as potential mechanisms responsible. We pro

Everywhere but in the Strike Statistics? : Wage Systems and Work Stoppages in Sweden, 1863-1927

To what extent did employers' attempts to control work processes and increase work intensity by introducing new wage systems lead to labour conflicts in the decades around 1900? I adress this question by combining two approaches. Firstly, by reviewing newly digitized micro-level data on work stoppages in Sweden from 1863 to 1927. Secondly, by compiling case-study evidence on work processes and ind

Treatment and survival of patients with metachronous colorectal lung metastases

Introduction: The lungs are the second most common site for metachronous metastases in colorectal cancer. No treatment algorithm is established, and the role of adjuvant chemotherapy is unclear. This study aimed to map pulmonary recurrences in a modern multimodal treated population, and to evaluate survival depending on management. Methods: Retrospective study based on the COLOFOL-trial population

High rates of undiagnosed diabetes mellitus among patients with active tuberculosis in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

Background: Tuberculosis (TB) and diabetes mellitus (DM) have negative synergistic impact on each other. Global guidelines recommend collaborative efforts to address this synergy, but implementation has been slow. Part of the reason is lack of adequate evidence on the operational feasibility of existing tools and mechanisms of collaboration. The objective of this study was to assess the yield of D

Understanding Gardar Sahlberg with neural nets : On algorithmic reuse of the Swedish SF archive

In this article, we re-trace the history of the Swedish SF archive and reflect on how this collection of historic newsreels has been reappropriated and remixed throughout more recent media history. In particular, we focus on the work of director and film historian Gardar Sahlberg, who made extensive use of the SF archive, first in a series of documentary films, then in a number of historical TV pr

Probing the coverage of nanoparticles by biomimetic membranes through nanoplasmonics

Although promising for biomedicine, the clinical translation of inorganic nanoparticles (NPs) is limited by low biocompatibility and stability in biological fluids. A common strategy to circumvent this drawback consists in disguising the active inorganic core with a lipid bilayer coating, reminiscent of the structure of the cell membrane to redefine the chemical and biological identity of NPs. Whi

Governing Street-Level Bureaucracies : The Organizational Shaping of Caseworkers

This book examines how caseworkers are governed in today’s street-level bureaucracies. It redefines our understanding of public sector governance by highlighting the subtle, informal, and everyday forms of organizational governance that shape caseworkers’ subjectivities beyond formal policies and professional identities. Based on four distinct types of normative governance – ‘governance by discour

Association between clinical outcome and microbiological findings in peritonsillar abscess - an observational study

Background: Previous studies on causative pathogens in peritonsillar abscesses have yielded varying results. However, Group A streptococci (GAS) and Fusobacterium necrophorum have been identified frequently. The aim of this study was to investigate pathogens in peritonsillar abscesses in patients tested for both ß-hemolytic streptococci and F. necrophorum, and to investigate associations between p

Elucidating the nanostructure of small interfering RNA-loaded lipidoid-polymer hybrid nanoparticles

We analyzed the structural and material properties of small interfering RNA (siRNA)-loaded lipid-polymer hybrid nanoparticles (LPNs) containing ionizable lipidoid and poly(dl-lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) using small-angle X-ray scattering, cryogenic transmission electron microscopy, polarized light microscopy, the Langmuir monolayer methodology, differential scanning calorimetry, and attenuated

Effect of nanoparticle concentration and surfactants on nanofluid pool boiling

Silica nanofluids are prepared with a concentration varying from 0.001 vol.% to 0.003 vol.%, and pool boiling of the nanofluids is experimentally investigated. It is found that critical heat flux and heat transfer coefficient increase by a maximum of 62.66% and 45.88% compared with deionized water. The best boiling performance is achieved with the nanofluid of 0.002 vol.%. In addition, the paper f
