Model-Based Optimization of Tapered Free-Electron Lasers

The energy extraction efficiency is a figure of merit for a free-electron laser (FEL). It can be enhanced by the technique of undulator tapering, which enables the sustained growth of radiation power beyond the initial saturation point. In the development of a single-pass x-ray FEL, it is important to exploit the full potential of this technique and optimize the taper profile aw(z). Our approach t

Intraspecific Kleptoparasitism in the Common Coot (Fulica atra)

In late fall and early winter > 2,000 Common Coots (Fulica atra) may gather on the small, shallow Lake Krankesjon in southern Sweden, where they dive for submerged plants. Casual observations indicated that intraspecific kleptoparasitism was common throughout these flocks. Kleptoparasitic attacks mostly occurred shortly after a Common Coot surfaced with food and before it had ingested much of it.

Blund

This study implicates research on outdoor pedagogies and a solution to support and extend pre-schools visits in nature environments. Pedagogies where daily activities take place in nature environments is growing among Swedish schools and pre-schools. Research about child development shows that free play outside has a number of positive effects on children’s health and well-being. Nature has proven

Aspiration: a potential complication to vagus nerve stimulation

PURPOSE: Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) is reported to reduce the frequency of seizures in children and adults without causing serious side effects. However, clinical observation of swallowing difficulties in 2 children treated with VNS made further investigation necessary. METHODS: Seven patients aged 4-18 years and treated with VNS for 6-14 months were investigated with videoradiography during ba

Simulation of ethanol production processes based on enzymatic hydrolysis of woody biomass

The process simulator ASPEN PLUS was used for simulation of an ethanol production process based on enzymatic hydrolysis of lignocellulosic materials. Various process configurations were studied to increase the overall yield of ethanol and to reduce the energy consumption in the process. An increased utilization of the pentosan fraction was achieved by a complex recycling of streams in the process.

Coronary Hemodynamics in Patients With Severe Aortic Stenosis and Coronary Artery Disease Undergoing Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement : Implications for Clinical Indices of Coronary Stenosis Severity

OBJECTIVES: In this study, a systematic analysis was conducted of phasic intracoronary pressure and flow velocity in patients with severe aortic stenosis (AS) and coronary artery disease, undergoing transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), to determine how AS affects: 1) phasic coronary flow; 2) hyperemic coronary flow; and 3) the most common clinically used indices of coronary stenosis seve

Prenatal and early postnatal treatment in 3-phosphoglycerate-dehydrogenase deficiency

3-phosphoglycerate-dehydrogenase (3-PGDH) deficiency is an L-serine biosynthesis disorder, characterised by congenital microcephaly, severe psychomotor retardation, and intractable seizures. We report prenatal diagnosis of an affected fetus by DNA mutation analysis. Ultrasound assessment showed a reduction in fetal head circumference from the 75th percentile at 20 weeks' gestation to the 29th perc

Disseminated tumour cells from the bone marrow of early breast cancer patients : Results from an international pooled analysis

Purpose: Presence of disseminated tumour cells (DTCs) in the bone marrow (BM) has been described as a surrogate of residual disease in patients with early breast cancer (EBC). PADDY (Pooled Analysis of DTC Detection in Early Breast Cancer) is a large international analysis of pooled data that aimed to assess the prognostic impact of DTCs in patients with EBC. Experimental design: Individual patien

Health-Related Quality of Life, Dysphagia, Voice Problems, Depression, and Anxiety After Total Laryngectomy

Objectives/Hypothesis: The aims were to determine health-related quality of life (HRQoL), including voice problems, dysphagia, depression, and anxiety after total laryngectomy (TL), and investigate the associations between HRQoL and the late effects. Study Design: Cross-sectional study. Methods: 172 participants having received a TL 1.6 to 18.1 years ago for laryngeal/hypopharyngeal cancer filled

Association Between Soft Drink Consumption and Mortality in 10 European Countries

Importance: Soft drinks are frequently consumed, but whether this consumption is associated with mortality risk is unknown and has been understudied in European populations to date. Objective: To examine the association between total, sugar-sweetened, and artificially sweetened soft drink consumption and subsequent total and cause-specific mortality.Design, Setting, and Participants: This populatio

Characteristics of screening detected prostate cancer in men 50 to 66 years old with 3 to 4 ng./Ml. Prostate specific antigen

Purpose: We defined the yield and nature of prostate cancer in the setting of population based, randomized prostate specific antigen (PSA) guided screening in men with PSA levels between 3 and 4 ng./ml. who were 50 to 65 years old at the time of randomization. Materials and Methods: Sextant biopsies were performed in 243 men with PSA of 3 to 4 ng./ml. Therapy decisions were based on core cancer le

Influence of alcohol on morbidity after colonic surgery

Postoperative morbidity after colorectal surgery was retrospectively investigated, comparing 32 alcoholics (≥60 gm of alcohol a day) to 32 controls (<25 gm of alcohol a day). The material originated from 260 male patients and the two groups were paired with respect to operative procedure, diagnosis, age-complicating cardiopulmonary diseases, weight, and smoking habits. Postoperative morbidity was

Search for Higgs and Z Boson Decays to J/psi gamma and Upsilon(nS)gamma with the ATLAS Detector

A search for the decays of the Higgs and Z bosons to J/psi gamma and Upsilon(nS)gamma (n = 1,2,3) is performed with pp collision data samples corresponding to integrated luminosities of up to 20.3 fb(-1) collected at root s = 8 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. No significant excess of events is observed above expected backgrounds and 95% C.L. upper limits are placed o

Pyrolysis modeling of PVC and PMMA using a distributed reactivity model

The thermal decomposition kinetics of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) was studied by thermogravimetry using non isothermal experiments. A detailed kinetic analysis was done using the isoconversional methods (model-free) (including Friedman, Kissinger-Akhaira-Sunose (KAS) and Kissinger methods) and distributed reactivity model (model-fitting). The overall aim was to
