Massive star cluster formation and evolution in tidal dwarf galaxies

The formation of globular clusters remains an open debate. Dwarf starburst galaxies are efficient at forming young massiveclusters with similar masses as globular clusters and may hold the key to understanding their formation.Aims.We study star cluster formation in a tidal debris - including the vicinity of three tidal dwarf galaxies - in a massive gas dominatedcollisional ring around NGC 5291. Th

Cost-effectiveness of proton beam therapy vs. conventional radiotherapy for patients with brain tumors in Sweden : results from a non-randomized prospective multicenter study

Background: This study assessed the cost-effectiveness of proton beam therapy (PBT) compared to conventional radiotherapy (CRT) for treating patients with brain tumors in Sweden. Methods: Data from a longitudinal non-randomized study performed between 2015 and 2020 was used, and included adult patients with brain tumors, followed during treatment and through a one-year follow-up. Clinical and demo

Experimental and Computational Analysis of Mode I Fracture in Wood : Likelihood-based inference and finite element model updating

This thesis covers the estimation of the fracture behaviour of the European woodspecies Norway spruce and birch. The fracture behavior of wood can be quantifiedthrough three material parameters: the stiffness, the strength, and the specific fractureenergy. In the present work, these parameters are characterized through two methods. The first method is purely experimental and only estimates one para

Vitamin K1 Administration Increases the Level of Circulating Carboxylated Osteocalcin in Critically Ill Patients

Background/Objectives: Vitamin K-dependent proteins (VKDPs) all commonly possess specially modified γ-carboxyglutamic acid residues created in a vitamin K-dependent manner. Several liver-derived coagulation factors are well characterised VKDPs. However, much less is known about extrahepatic VKDPs, which are more diverse in their molecular structures and functions, and some of which have been impli

Offentlighetsprincipen : Lagstiftarens avvägningar mellan handlingsoffentlighet och sekretess 1809-1980

Sweden was the first country in the world to introduce rules on transparency in public activities - the principle of public access to official records was introduced as early as 1766 as part of the Freedom of the Press Act of 1766. This legislation, which was unique at the time, has since meant that Sweden has had public access to official records and transparency as the main rule for public activ

Den allmänna repressionsnivån och brottens relativa allvar : En översikt av repressionshöjningar och straffskärpningar i Sverige 2010-2023

A recently proposed overhaul of Swedish criminal law is characte rized by calls for punitive reforms. The government cites changes in the perception of the severity of different crimes, the appropriate general level of repression, the balance between the interests of the penal system, and the function of punishment, as reasons for a more repressive criminal law. Yet the general level of repression

Out of Time : Alienated temporalities in archaeological knowledge production

The transformation of complex spatial and temporal patterns into mapped and recordedarchaeological data requires archaeologists to translate temporally non-distinct processes ofexploration into a series of visual recordings of distinct moment of discovery. These visual records, produced by articulating key moments in the excavation process as cleaned and documentablecontexts and finds, form a colla

Reasons for Career Termination in Danish Elite Athletes: Investigating Gender Differences and the Time-point as Potential Correlates

Introduction: Career termination, an inevitable step in every athlete’s career, has received increased attention within sport psychological research. A career termination that results in psychological problems is of special concern for sport federations, organizations and clubs. Research has shown that it is crucial to consider an athlete’s the reason for career termination. There is evidence that

Small-Scale Dosimetry for the Testis: Applications in Nuclear Medicine Diagnostics and Therapy

It is well known that the testicles are among the most radiosensitive tissue, and constitute an important critical target for both external and internal radiation during diagnostic and therapeutic use of radionuclides. In systemic radionuclide therapy where very high activities are administered, the testis may become a dose-limiting organ; often with a complex, non-uniform activity distribution an

Auditing patient registration in the Swedish quality register for acute coronary syndrome.

AIMS: The present study aims to quantify non-participation in the RIKS-HIA register during 2005 and to compare acute myocardial infarction (AMI) patients registered and not registered in RIKS-HIA, in relation to sociodemographic factors, prevalent disease, and 7-day and 30-day survival. METHODS: We linked information on sociodemographic characteristics, treatments, morbidity, and mortality from th

Assessment of Aerobic Capacity A Novel Rating Scale and Further Development of an Exercise Test including Analysis of Gas Exchange

Längre tids arbete kan emellDifferent methods are proposed to assess the aerobic capacity. A novel scale, rating of perceived capacity (RPC) based on metabolic equivalents (METs) from 1 to 20, is presented. Selected MET values are linked to physical activities. Comparison of the rating with an exercise test in a group of women revealed that a correction based on age more accurately predicted the maximal exercise capacity. An

Evaporative Annular Flow in Micro/Minichannels: A Simple Heat Transfer Model

The present study collected and analyzed flow boiling data points which fall in the annular flow regime with an increasing heat transfer coefficient h - vapor quality x trend (h increases with increasing x) in small diameter channels (0.1 < dh < 3.1 mm) for halogenated refrigerants, CO2 and water. In this annular flow regime, heat transfer coefficient also depends on both heat flux and mass flux.

Experimental insights on CIRLEM : Enhancing energy efficiency and flexibility in buildings

The growing complexity of urban energy systems, climate uncertainties, and geopolitical disruptions highlight the need for energy flexibility and smart management. Recent developments in smart buildings enable real-time adaptability and collective energy behavior through the deployment of Reinforcement Learning (RL), which optimizes energy use, integrates distributed resources, and enhances demand

Power line Corridors as Suitable Habitat for Butterfly Species - Abundance and species richness for day-living butterflies found in power line corridors in forested areas in Scania

The landscape composition in Sweden has drastically changed during recent years. Intensified farming and forestry has led to reduced areas valuable for biodiversity and a decline of biodiversity across many organism groups. In Sweden almost 30% of all day-living butterflies are considered threatened. Habitat creation as a by-product of anthropogenic activities may provide new habitats for species

The Alcyone CZT SPECT camera. Evaluation of performance using phantom measurement and Monte Carlo simulations

Background Coronary artery disease is one of the most common causes of death. A common cardiac examination is to give a visualization of the myocardial blood flow by injecting a radio pharmaceutical and detect the radiation with a camera. The camera has for decades been using thallium doped sodium iodide (NaI(Tl)) as the detector material. New detector materials have been developed because of the
