Detection of SARS-CoV-2 by rapid antigen tests on saliva in hospitalized patients with COVID-19

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic presents great challenges on transmission prevention, and rapid diagnosis is essential to reduce the disease spread. Various diagnostic methods are available to identify an ongoing infection by nasopharyngeal (NPH) swab sampling. However, the procedure requires handling by health care professionals, and therefore limits the application in household and community s

Food biodiversity and total and cause-specific mortality in 9 European countries : An analysis of a prospective cohort study

BACKGROUND: Food biodiversity, encompassing the variety of plants, animals, and other organisms consumed as food and drink, has intrinsic potential to underpin diverse, nutritious diets and improve Earth system resilience. Dietary species richness (DSR), which is recommended as a crosscutting measure of food biodiversity, has been positively associated with the micronutrient adequacy of diets in w

Cell Type Dependent Suppression of Inflammatory Mediators by Myocardin Related Transcription Factors

Myocardin related transcription factors (MRTFs: MYOCD/myocardin, MRTF-A, and MRTF-B) play a key role in smooth muscle cell differentiation by activating contractile genes. In atherosclerosis, MRTF levels change, and most notable is a fall of MYOCD. Previous work described anti-inflammatory properties of MRTF-A and MYOCD, occurring through RelA binding, suggesting that MYOCD reduction could contrib

Comparable Initial Engagement of Intracellular Signaling Pathways by Parathyroid Hormone Receptor Ligands Teriparatide, Abaloparatide, and Long-Acting PTH

Multiple analogs of parathyroid hormone, all of which bind to the PTH/PTHrP receptor PTH1R, are used for patients with osteoporosis and hypoparathyroidism. Although ligands such as abaloparatide, teriparatide (hPTH 1-34 [TPTD]), and long-acting PTH (LA-PTH) show distinct biologic effects with respect to skeletal and mineral metabolism endpoints, the mechanistic basis for these clinically-important

Association Between Mortality and Levels of Autonomous Cortisol Secretion by Adrenal Incidentalomas : A Cohort Study

BACKGROUND: Autonomous cortisol secretion in patients with adrenal incidentalomas is associated with increased mortality, but detailed information about the risk associated with specific levels of autonomous cortisol secretion is not available.OBJECTIVE: To measure the association between mortality and levels of autonomous cortisol secretion in patients with adrenal incidentalomas.DESIGN: Retrospe

Assessment of a 4-Week Starch- and Sucrose-Reduced Diet and Its Effects on Gastrointestinal Symptoms and Inflammatory Parameters among Patients with Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Dietary advice constitutes a treatment strategy for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). We aimed to examine the effect of a starch- and sucrose-reduced diet (SSRD) on gastrointestinal symptoms in IBS patients, in relation to dietary intake and systemic inflammatory parameters. IBS patients (n = 105) were randomized to a 4-week SSRD intervention (n = 80) receiving written and verbal dietary advice focu

Identity, Social Media and Politics: How Young Emirati Women Make Sense of Female Politicians in the UAE

Social media offered new opportunities for politicians to engage withpublic. However, little research explored public perceptions of womenpoliticians, and their role in women empowerment, especially in nonWesterncontexts. This study used the qualitative methodology toexplore how young Emirati women made sense of women politicians andtheir social media posts. Drawing from the intersectionality theo

Differential gene expression in adipose tissue from obese human subjects during weight loss and weight maintenance.

BACKGROUND: Differential gene expression in adipose tissue during diet-induced weight loss followed by a weight stability period is poorly characterized. Markers of these processes may provide a deeper understanding of underlying mechanisms. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to identify differentially expressed genes in human adipose tissue during weight loss and weight maintenance after weight loss. DESIGN:

Thresholds for Minimum Data Set Quality Indicators Developed and Applied in Icelandic Nursing Homes.

A modified Delphi method was used to determine thresholds for Minimum Data Set quality indicators for Icelandic nursing homes. The thresholds were then applied to quality outcomes in Icelandic nursing homes for the year 2009. The thresholds indicate areas of good or poor care and can be used for planning services. Icelandic nursing homes seem to be doing best in incontinence and nutritional care.

Gene Expression in Graves' Ophthalmopathy and Arm Lymphedema: Similarities and Differences.

Background: Graves' ophthalmopathy (GO) and lymphedema share some pathogenetic mechanisms, such as edema, inflammation, and adipogenesis. The aim of this study was to examine similarities and differences between chronic GO and chronic lymphedema. Methods: Intraorbital adipose tissue was collected from patients with active (n = 10) or chronic GO (n = 10) and thyroid-healthy controls (n = 10). Arm s

P-selectin mediates neutrophil rolling and recruitment in acute pancreatitis.

BACKGROUND: The adhesive mechanisms regulating leucocyte-endothelium interactions in the pancreas remain elusive, but selectins may play a role. This study examined the molecular mechanisms mediating leucocyte rolling along the endothelium in the pancreas and the therapeutic potential of targeting the rolling adhesive interaction in acute pancreatitis (AP). METHODS: Pancreatitis was induced by ret

Enterolactone and breast cancer: methodological issues may contribute to conflicting results in observational studies.

Lignans found in plant foods are converted by the intestinal microflora to enterolignans. The structure of enterolignans is similar to that of estrogens, which has inspired researchers to examine a potential protective association in relation to health outcomes. Numerous epidemiological studies have measured concentration of enterolignans, mainly enterolactone, in blood or urine as a biomarker of

A high eating frequency is associated with an overall healthy lifestyle in middle-aged men and women and reduced likelihood of general and central obesity in men.

The role of eating frequency in obesity development is debated. Therefore, we investigated the association between eating frequency, BMI and waist circumference (WC), as well as how eating frequency is related to diet composition and lifestyle factors. A subsample (aged 47-68 years) of men (n 1355) and women (n 1654) from the Malmö Diet and Cancer cohort was used for the present cross-sectional st

Distribution of melatonin receptors in murine pancreatic islets.

Melatonin has multiple receptor-dependent and receptor-independent functions. At the cell membrane, melatonin interacts with its receptors MT1 and MT2, which are expressed in numerous tissues. Genome-wide association studies have recently shown that the MTNR1B/MT2 receptor may be involved in the pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes mellitus. In line with these findings, expression of melatonin receptor

N-cadherin is dispensable for pancreas development but required for beta-cell granule turnover.

The cadherin family of cell adhesion molecules mediates adhesive interactions that are required for the formation and maintenance of tissues. Previously, we demonstrated that N-cadherin, which is required for numerous morphogenetic processes, is expressed in the pancreatic epithelium at E9.5, but later becomes restricted to endocrine aggregates in mice. To study the role of N-cadherin during pancr

Abnormally decreased NO and augmented CO production in islets of the leptin-deficient ob/ob mouse might contribute to explain hyperinsulinemia and islet survival in leptin-resistant type 2 obese diabetes.

The role of the gaseous messengers NO and CO for β-cell function and survival is controversial. We examined this issue in the hyperglycemic-hyperinsulinemic ob/ob mouse, an animal model of type 2 obese diabetes, by studying islets from obese vs lean mice regarding glucose-stimulated insulin release in relation to islet NO and CO production and the influence of modulating peptide hormones. Glucose-

Probiotics lower plasma glucose in the high-fat fed C57BL/6J mouse.

Today, the gut microbiota is considered a key organ in host nutritional metabolism and recent data have suggested that alterations in gut microbiota contribute to the development of type 2 diabetes and obesity. Accordingly, a whole range of beneficial effects relating to inflammation and gut health have been observed following administration of probiotics to both humans and different animal models
