The Human Dimension- Critical to Sustainable Quality
Heat loss from a thermal manikin during wet tests with walking simulation
The walking tests with a thermal manikin TORE were carried out with THERMPROTECT WP2 clothing. The test conditions simulated the human tests of the same work package, including ambient conditions (10 and 25 °C), clothing (impermeable and permeable), wetting of cotton underwear (wet and dry) and setting the walking speed to approximately the same level. Additional tests in homogenous conditions (Ta

Comparison of moisture equilibrium of cement-based materials in presence of slag and silica fume in different wetting and drying cycles
Water vapor sorption isotherms are essential data in models to predict the service life of the cement based structures. The knowledge about sorption isotherms in the presence of supplementary cementitous materials (SCMs) is limited. This study investigates the influence of water to cement ratio (0.4, 0.5 and 0.6), and the presence of two SCMs (70% slag and 10% silica fume) on sorption isotherm in

Approximate clustering of fingerprint vectors with missing values
We study the problem of clustering fingerprints with at most p missing values (CMV (p) for short) naturally arising in oligonucleotide fingerprinting, which is an efficient method for characterizing DNA clone libraries. We show that already CMV(2) is NP-hard. We also show that a greedy algorithm yields a min(1 + ln n, 2+pln l) approximation for CMV(p), and can be implemented to run in O(nl2p) time.
Chains in chains : Logic and Challenges of Blockchains in Supply Chains
Due to the disruptive role of the Bitcoin in the financial sector, both scholars and practitioners are increasingly wondering whether it is possible to replicate the impact of the Blockchain technology in the supply chain context. As a distributed ledger technology characterized by the decentralized consensus, Blockchain is touted by many as the proper platform to collect all the information about
Extending the visco-frictional branched modeling of filled rubbers to include coupling effects between rate and amplitude dependence
The traditional way to capture rate and amplitude dependence of filled rubbers is by a branched model containing elastic, viscous, and frictional branches, leading to a decoupling of the rate and amplitude dependence. In order to capture the experimentally observed phenomena with a steeper increasing dynamic modulus with frequency, for small amplitudes, a model by Besseling (1958) is revisited. In
Value of information-based inspection planning for offshore structures
Asset integrity and management is an important part of the oil and gas industry especially for existing offshore structures. With declining oil price, the production rate is an important factor to be maintained that makes integrity of the structures one of the main concerns. Reliability based and risk- based inspection (RRBI) constitutes an efficient method to optimize inspection planning. Basing
Effects of dynamic street lighting on walking speed and reading perfomance : a full-scale laboratory study
Dynamic lighting systems are introduced in urban outdoor environments with the objective to reduce energy use. Effects on pedestrians are not fully known. Previous studies have mainly used observer assessment (Viliunas et al., 2014), and focused on perceived personal safety (Haans & de Kort, 2012) or acceptance (Boomsma & Steg, 2013). In this study, performance (walking speed and reading)
Experimental and thermal analysis of wall assemblies exposed to standard and parametric fires
The aim of this study is to assess the effect that different fire exposures have on the behaviour of gypsum plasterboard assemblies with known fire resistance rating. For this purpose a series of fire tests were performed on commonly used wall assemblies. Four different small scale samples were tested under ISO 834 and HCC standard fire curves. Additionally, one assembly was tested in an enclosure
Field-Scale Quality Control of Lime-Cement Pillar in Conductive Clay Using Electrical Resistivity Tomography
Ground improvement with lime-cement pillars is becoming increasingly common in the Nordic countries for exploitation of areas with poor stability. However, there is no non-destructive method for quality control of the ground improvement. Significant changes in the electrical properties after mixing of the binders make electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) a potential method. In connection with l
State-copying and Recomputation in Parallel Constraint Programming with Global Constraints
In this paper we discuss parallelization and distribution of problems modeled in a constraint programming (CP) framework. We focus on parallelization of depth-first search methods, since search is the most time-consuming task in CP. The current hardware development is moving towards multi-core processors and the cost of building distributed systems is shrinking. Hence, parallelization and distribu
Carsim: A System to Visualize Written Road Accident Reports as Animated 3D Scenes
This paper describes a system to create animated 3D scenes of car accidents from reports written in Swedish. The system has been developed using news reports of varying size and complexity. The text-to-scene conversion process consists of two stages. An information extraction module creates a structured representation of the accident and a visual simulator generates and animates the scene. We firs
Modeling of transport and gain in quantum cascade lasers
The theory of nonequilibrium Green functions allows for a quantitative modeling of quantum cascade lasers. Explicit results are given for transport in a THz-laser and gain in a IR-Laser
Introducing Handover Prioritization in Channel Borrowing Without Locking (CBWL)
In order to improve the offered quality of service in a cellular network, load balancing between cells with momentarily different traffic loads can be applied. This can be accomplished through channel borrowing techniques where a cell requiring extra capacity borrows a channel from a less loaded cell in the same region. However, the borrowing of a channel results in an alteration of the channel re

Motion control system of MAX IV Laboratory soft x-ray beamlines
At the MAX IV Laboratory, five new soft x-ray beamlines are under development. The first is Species and it will be used to develop and set the standard of the control system, which will be common across the facility. All motion axes at MAX IV will be motorized using stepper motors steered by the IcePAP motion controller and a mixture of absolute and incremental encoders following a predefined coor
