Worldwide, disasters and climate change pose a serious risk to sustainable urban development, resulting in escalating human and economic costs. Consequently, city authorities and other urban actors face the challenge of integrating risk reduction and adaptation strategies into their work, although related knowledge and expertise are still scarce. Cities, Disaster Risk and Adaptation explores ways

To fully utilize the available spectrum for a wireless communication system it is feasible to adapt to different situations on the channel. In this paper a flexible OFDM transmitter is presented together with basic theory behind OFDM transmission. It is shown that high flexibility can be obtained with a reasonable amount of additional hardware. Part of the design, the FFT-processor, has already be

This paper presents a novel approach to scheduling communications among concurrent hardware processes mapped onto a "System on a Programmable Chip." Point-to-point, broadcast and multi-cast ommunication types are supported. The algorithm has been prototyped on the Processor-Coupled Polymorphous Fabric for the Altera Excalibur Arm architecture. The communication schedule problem has been specified

An improved conventional-to-micro/minichannel threshold was proposed as Bo = 4 and BoRe(1)(0.5) = 200, where Bo is the Bond number and Re-1 is the liquid Reynolds number. The region Bo < 4 and BoRe(1)(0.5) < 200 is termed as micro/minichannel because bubbles tend to be confined and elongated in the channel and the conventional two-phase flow theory loses its applicability. Flow-pattern based heat

This paper presents a design study aiming to compare a PMSM, EMSM and an SMSM solution in order to rind the most competitive one for the BAS application. The study is mainly based on FE calculations, which are contrasted with the results obtained from a common car alternator. The highlights are efficiency and torque characteristics, and the way they contribute to improve the most important feature

We report on recent advances on the computation of the matrix elements of the electroweak penguins Q(7) and Q(8) which are relevant for the DeltaI = 3/2 contribution to epsilon'(K) in the chiral limit. The matching of scale and scheme dependences between Wilson coefficients and these matrix elements is done analytically at NLO in alpha(S).

This article attempts to show how the concept of the body - as it has been applied in feminist thought - can be utilised in trying to understand the changing and at times problematic working relations between doctors and nurses in Sweden. Three approaches are applied with respect to the body: (1) Doctors and nurses belong to two different collective bodies which embody historical constructions of

We study the problem of clustering fingerprints with at most p missing values (CMV (p) for short) naturally arising in oligonucleotide fingerprinting, which is an efficient method for characterizing DNA clone libraries. We show that already CMV(2) is NP-hard. We also show that a greedy algorithm yields a min(1 + ln n, 2+pln l) approximation for CMV(p), and can be implemented to run in O(nl2p) time.

We study ways to expedite Yates's algorithm for computing the zeta and Moebius transforms of a function defined on the subset lattice. We develop a trimmed variant of Moebius inversion that proceeds point by point, finishing the calculation at a subset before considering its supersets. For an n-element universe U and a family F of its subsets, trimmed Moebius inversion allows us to compute the num

Dynamic languages typically allow programs to be written at a very high level of abstraction. But their dynamic nature makes it very hard to compile such languages, meaning that a price has to be paid in terms of performance. However under certain restricted conditions compilation is possible. In this paper we describe how a domain specific language for image processing in Python can be compiled f

A full description of the entire system room-wall-room in a theoretical model for sound insulation is still today too computation intensive, implying that the higher frequencies cannot be studied. Some simplifications must thus be introduced. The simplification proposed in the present paper is to replace the rooms with wave-guides, i.e. infinity long rooms. The model then reduces to the (more or l

Three-dimensional boundary finding based on Fourier surface optimization is presented as a method for segmentation of SPECT images. Being robust against noise and adjustable with respect to its detail resolution, it forms an interesting alternative in this application area. A three-dimensional approach can also be assumed to increase the possibility of delineating low contrast regions, as compared

We introduce and study a class of model prototype hybrid systems comprised of a microscopic stochastic surface process modeling adsorption/desorption and/or surface di.usion of particles coupled to an ordinary di.erential equation (ODE) displaying bifurcations excited by a critical noise parameter. The models proposed here are caricatures of realistic systems arising in diverse applications rangin

The evolutionary divergence of a single species into two has never been directly observed in nature, primarily because speciation can take a long time to occur. A ring species, in which a chain of intergrading populations encircles a barrier and the terminal forms coexist without interbreeding, provides a situation in which variation in space can be used to infer variation in time(1-3). Here we re
