Cascades of green: A review of ecosystem-based adaptation in urban areas

Climate change impacts increase pressure on challenges to sustainability and the developmental needs of cities. Conventional, “hard” adaptation measures are often associated with high costs, inflexibility and conflicting interests related to the dense urban fabric, and ecosystem-based adaptation (EbA) has emerged as a potentially cost-efficient, comprehensive, and multifunctional approach. This pa

Abundances in metal-rich stars. Detailed abundance analysis of 47 G and K dwarf stars with [Me/H] > 0.10 dex

We have derived elemental abundances of O, Na, Mg, Al, Si, Ca, Ti, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni as well as for a number of s-elements for 47 G and K dwarf, with [Me/H]>0.1 dex. The selection of stars was based on their kinematics as well as on their uvby-beta photometry. One sample of stars on rather eccentric orbits traces the chemical evolution interior to the solar orbit and another, on circular orbits,

Effects of hypothermia in hypercapnia and hypercapnic hypoxemia

Anesthetized, paralyzed and mechanically ventilated pigs were hypoventilated to extreme hypercapnia (PaCO2 approximately 20 kPa) at FiO2 0.5, and allotted to a hypothermic group (31.5 +/- 0.1 degrees C, n = 6) or a control group (39.6 +/- 0.2 degrees C, n = 6). Compared with the controls, the hypothermic animals had higher PaO2 (19.2 vs 15.6 kPa, P < 0.05), SaO2 (97.2 vs 89.3%), SvO2 (78.7 vs 68.2

Patentability Standards for Follow-on Pharmaceutical Innovation

Follow-on pharmaceutical innovation occurring after the initial discovery of a drug active ingredient plays an important, but at times underappreciated, role in providing innovative solutions to compelling medical needs. Examples of follow-on innovation include new forms of a drug with improved safety-efficacy profiles, new formulations and dosages providing improved patient outcomes, and new meth

Carpal tunnel syndrome. Diagnosis and treatment.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) is the most common compression neuropathy causing pain, impaired hand function and sick leave. CTS is usually diagnosed based on patient history and clinical tests. In some patients an additional ENeG is done to support the diagnosis. However, ENeG can show pathology in healthy people and show normal values in patients with overwhelming clinical signs of CTS. Tradition

Acquisitions for Sleep

Within the policy debate, there is a fear that large incumbent firms buy small firms' inventions to ensure that they are not used in the market. We show that such "acquisitions for sleep" can occur if and only if the quality of a process invention is small; otherwise, the entry profit will be higher than the entry-deterring value. We then show that the incentive for acquiring for the purpose of pu

The Emergent Politics of Geoengineering

Refining Loess Chronologies and Dust Flux Reconstructions in the Carpathian and Wallachian Basins

Loess-palaeosol sequences (LPS) are among the most continuous terrestrial archives of Quaternary climate change. Their widespread distribution, high accumulation potential, and sensitivity to environmental variability make them critical for reconstructing past dust fluxes, wind regimes, and regional ecosystem responses. However, the reliability of such reconstructions is fundamentally constrained

Angloamerikanska standardklausuler i svensk kommersiell avtalsrätt

Det som emellertid är problematiskt för svenskt viThe purpose of this paper is to analyze boilerplate-clauses from a Swedish contract law perspective. Boilerplate-clauses are widely recognized for their role in enhancing predictability in commercial contracts, providing standardized terms that are not tailored to the specifics of an individual agreement. However, a challenge arises from the fact that these clauses originate from Anglo-American le

One of the major and important changes for animal welfare is that the knowledge requirement is to now be introduced into the law. Worth to mention is that there also was an ambition to introduce the education requirement into the law. However, this proved to be disproportionate and too demanding. A probl

Synergistic effects of mesenchymal stromal cells and immunotherapy in experimental brain tumors

Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is the most common and aggressive form of primary brain tumor. In spite of surgical resection, combined radiation therapy and chemotherapy, the mean survival is less than 15 months following diagnosis. Using the established N29 and N32 animal models of glioma, shown to have many similarities with the human tumor, we are able to study and develop therapeutic strategies

Large-scale monitoring of waders on their boreal and arctic breeding grounds in northern Europe

Large-scale and population-wide monitoring of waders on their boreal and arctic breeding grounds has hitherto been lacking, mainly because logistics are truly challenging in regions with few ornithologists, vast areas and few roads. In Norway, Sweden and Finland (here 'Fennoscandia') there are now national monitoring schemes in place, aimed at tracking all bird species, which allows trends to be e

Measuring the glycemic index of foods: interlaboratory study

Background: Many laboratories offer glycemic index (GI) services. Objective: We assessed the performance of the method used to measure GI. Design: The GI of cheese-puffs and fruit-leather (centrally provided) was measured in 28 laboratories (n = 311 subjects) by using the FAO/WHO method. The laboratories reported the results of their calculations and sent the raw data for recalculation centrally.
