Socioeconomic Status and Adult Lifespan, 1881-2020 : New Estimates from Swedish Death Registers and Full-count Census Data

Contemporary Western countries show a strong socioeconomic gradient in health and mortality, but it remains unclear if such a gradient existed in historical societies as well. We use linked full-count censuses and death registers for Sweden, covering the cohorts 1841-1920, to study the development of the socioeconomic differences in longevity across these cohorts. Initially men in white-collar occ

Pruning the forest of turnover research: identifying important antecedents using predictive modelling

While extant research has identified numerous antecedents of turnover, our understanding of their relative influence on turnover behaviour remains limited. This article evaluates the predictive power of established turnover antecedents and determines which are most important for predicting turnover. Drawing on administrative and survey data from public employees in a large Danish municipality, we

State Lies as Violations of Human Rights

This article examines how lying by state agents can violate various human rights, including freedoms of opinion and expression, the right to health, and the right to participate in public affairs. The article argues that human rights law will apply regardless of whether states lie to their own people or to peoples of other states. The article also argues that lying by state agents can be justified

Exploring Uncertainty by Groaning in the Groan Zone: A Pattern for Emergent Conversation and Learning

This chapter will describe how educators can use uncertainty field books to explore students’ experiences as they navigate in complex and uncertain knowledge and information spaces, to engage others, and to start, grow and sustain movements for change using the groaning in the groan zone. In describing the field book, method and practice, but foremost students’ narratives, the chapter sets it up a

To Love and Protect: The Criminalization of Maternal Duty in The Tenant of Wildfell Hall

The Tenant of Wildfell Hall (1848) can be read as a protofeminist text and a radical novel for its time, as it confronted the lack of maternal rights and protection for children. In this paper I discuss the portrayal of motherhood, and the factors that empower and restrict Helen. Using Sarah Lewis´s Woman´s Mission (1839) and her contemporary views of maternal duty, this paper explores the complex

Procedurally Justifiable Strategies : Integrating Context Effects into Multistage Decision Making

This paper proposes a simple framework to model contextual influences on procedural decision making. In terms of utility, we differentiate between monetary payoffs and contextual psychological ones, e.g. deriving from the subjects’ normative frame of reference. Monetary payoffs are treated as common knowledge while psychological payoffs are treated as partly unforeseeable. Regarding behaviour, we

Disruptive Possibilities: AI and Planetary Health

This short playful piece is a result of my participation in the Collaborative Foresight Cycle on the Futures of AI and Sustainability. Hosted by Media Evolution in Malmö between May and June 2022, the Cycle brought together a broad range of actors to co-create and explore the future possibilities of AI in relation to sustainability. This piece is a response to the hopelessness which has arisen due

Cyber-Physical Systems: A Model-Based Approach

In this concise yet comprehensive Open Access textbook, future inventors are introduced to the key concepts of Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS). Using modeling as a way to develop deeper understanding of the computational and physical components of these systems, one can express new designs in a way that facilitates their simulation, visualization, and analysis. Concepts are introduced in a cross-disc

A clinical comparison of three computerized automatic perimeters in the detection of glaucoma defects

The ability to detect glaucomatous field defects of three automatic computerized perimeters (COMPETER, OCTOPUS, and PERIMETRON) was compared in a clinical study of 74 patients. This study included patients with glaucoma, those with suspected glaucoma in whom the visual fields were completely normal, and normal subjects. The reference fields were obtained by careful static and kinetic manual perime

Polarization Measurements in High-Energy Deuteron Photodisintegration

We present measurements of the recoil proton polarization for the d(→γ,→p)n reaction at θc.m.=90° for photon energies up to 2.4 GeV. These are the first data in this reaction for polarization transfer with circularly polarized photons. The induced polarization py vanishes above 1 GeV, contrary to meson-baryon model expectations, in which resonances lead to large polarizations. However, the polariz
