Why forced-choice and Likert items provide the same information on personality, including social desirability

Forced-choice response format is often considered superior to standard Likert format for controlling social desirability in personality inventories. We performed simulations and found that the trait information based on the two formats converges when the number of items is high and forced-choice items are mixed with regard to positively and negatively keyed items. Given that forced-choice items ex

On model spaces and density of functions smooth on the boundary

We characterize the model spaces K in which functions with smooth boundary extensions are dense. It is shown that such approximations are possible if and only if the singular measure associated to the singular inner factor of is concentrated on a countable union of Beurling Carleson sets. In fact, we use a duality argument to show that if there exists a restriction of the associated singular measu

Orchestrating an Entrepreneurial Ecosystem in an emerging country : The lead actor’s role from a social capital perspective

During the recent years, the question of whether an Entrepreneurial Ecosystem emerges organically or is man-made has been disputed. This paper explores the case of an Entrepreneurial Ecosystem in a developing country. We argue that in the context of lagging industrial development and weak institutions, a lead actor needs to step in to aid the emergence of an Entrepreneurial Ecosystem. We argue tha

A Voice Beyond the Edge: Michael Edgerton's "Anaphora" : Nonlinear dynamics in the extra-normal voice

The recital is focused on my research involving contemporary voice. My approach to singing research is becoming more systematic as the result of beginning to work on concepts central to the extra-normal voice, term coined by Michael Edward Edgerton. This approach to voice is based on voice science, the aims of which are to investigate the boundaries and/or limits of vocal sound production. In this

Lender-Borrower Stock Return Dependencies in Credit Networks: Evidence from Syndicated Loan Deals

We study the impact of credit networks on the interconnectedness between lenders' and borrowers' stock returns using syndicated loan data. We correct for biases from confounding factors and find significant stock return dependencies between small banks and large borrower firms with high default risk. Our analysis shows that portfolios of lender stocks, sorted based on signals from borrowers' retur

The development of accent stereotypes in late childhood: A tale of two English cities

English is spoken in a multitude of accents all over the world. But these accents are not neutral. They are a source of stereotypes. For example, people who speak with a Birmingham accent are considered less intelligent and less suitable as a university lecturer than people speaking with a standard British accent. This thesis investigates the factors that influence how English children develop theEnglish is spoken in a multitude of accents all over the world. But these accents are not neutral.

Authenticity in tourism theory and experience. Practically indispensable and theoretically mischievous?

The notion of authenticity arises in tourism research in two ways: In theory, as a contentious, complicated and disputed construct; empirically, as a recurrent theme in accounts of tourist experiences of place and culture and as a quality of tourists' experiences. This duality creates tension over the utility of authenticity in research and theory. We review recent literature on authenticity withi

Target protection as a key antibiotic resistance mechanism

Antibiotic resistance is mediated through several distinct mechanisms, most of which are relatively well understood and the clinical importance of which has long been recognized. Until very recently, neither of these statements was readily applicable to the class of resistance mechanism known as target protection, a phenomenon whereby a resistance protein physically associates with an antibiotic t

Is this time different? : Social capability and catch-up growth in Ethiopia, 1950–2020

This paper explores whether Ethiopia's rapid economic growth is transformative enough for the country to eventually catch up with high-income countries. It does so by exploring the change and continuity of four elements of social capability from 1950 to 2020: structural transformation, economic inclusion and the state's autonomy and accountability. It finds that Ethiopia's social capability modest
