AFA Insurance awards a grant to investigate the examination of vibration injuries in the construction industry
Carl Antonson, a PhD and specialist in general medicine at Lund University receives 1 066 000 SEK from AFA Insurance to investigate why construction workers decline medical examinations of injuries caused from working with vibrating tools. Working with vibrating tools can cause nerve and vascular damage to the hands and arms. Despite this, studies show that most construction workers decline medica
Overlooked supervisors to receive further training
This spring, LU is launching a joint faculty initiative to further train already established research supervisors. They constitute a hitherto forgotten group when it comes to professional development according to Maria Stanfors, vice chair of the Research Programmes Board (Swedish abbreviation FUN) and the person leading the project. “Over the years, there has been a lot of focus on doctoral stude

Update on the application process
This is an update for everyone having questions regarding the application for the autumn. In short, it’s the first application period we have in our new housing system, it was the first time we randomized the queue time on the first day, and it’s the first time both me and my colleague has been chiefly responsible for the student application process. All of this has meant some people’s priorities

Lund Hosts International AI4PEX Meeting to Advance Earth System Modelling with Artificial Intelligence
How can artificial intelligence help us better predict the future of our planet? That was the central question when researchers from across Europe gathered at Lund University earlier this summer for the second full consortium meeting of AI4PEX—a four-year Horizon Europe research project focused on improving Earth System Models (ESMs) using the latest AI methods. Organised by the Max Planck Institu

Scientists find spectacular black hole
Thanks to the Gaia space telescope, scientists have discovered a black hole in the Milky Way. The object, Gaia BH3, is located in the Eagle constellation, less than 2 000 light years from the Sun. Lennart Lindegren, Professor Emeritus of Astronomy at the Department of Physics, who has worked for many years to develop the measurement methods used by Gaia, is delighted with the new space discovery.

How she became Professor Hardcore
Former doctoral student Firas Jumaah and supervisor Charlotta Turner have had a special bond since 2014, when Jumaah and his family got caught up in the first ISIS lightning offensive in Iraq. Employing far-reaching means, Charlotta Turner managed to get them back to Lund unharmed. Now they have written a book together about the rescue. The new authors expectantly open a large cardboard box full

A work environment champion
As a young man, when Mats Bohgard was working at a chemical factory during a leave from studies, he was urged to “Come back and fix the work environment to make it fit for human beings!”. Mats Bohgard. “Even though they said it half-jokingly, the truth is that they were experiencing every conceivable work environment problem: chemical exposure, noticeable alcohol abuse, extreme noise levels and ma

Monster waves a mathematical challenge
For a mathematician, the waves of the sea are related to differential equations, and particularly complex ones at that. Mathematical research can help to improve understanding of how waves form and move – which could be useful, for example, in the work to predict dangerous monster waves. The sunlight glistens on the rippling waves. The calm expanse of the sea is spread out before Lomma beach. Erik

As the rainforest grows warmer, trees become overheated
Climate change threatens slow-growing tree species that are important carbon storages according to a new thesis by BECC researcher Maria Witteman. Children and biologists research biodiversity together
Preschool and primary school children will now be able to learn more about insects, birds, flowers and plants, how valuable they are and how people can protect nature. The Natural Nations co-operation project is introducing biodiversity into the curriculum. In the past, knowledge of species and nature was part of general education, and knowledge was also transmitted between generations. Today, the

WHO mission: creating evidence on how health care can prevent disease
Spreading awareness about sepsis - a common, life-threatening condition
How do you talk about a horrible and life-threatening condition in such a way as to make your audience aware of its existence, but without scaring them so much that they turn a deaf ear? And how do you get money for research into something that most people have barely heard about – or only know of under an old and partly incorrect name? This is the problem that a team of LU researchers are tacklin

How long does it take to comfort someone? Does an egg need to be fried rather than boiled? LUM invited home care researchers from the School of Social Work and the Faculty of Engineering (LTH) for a conversation. Bird parents that receive help live longer
Long life is common among bird parents that get help with childcare. This finding comes from researchers at the universities of Lund and Oxford who reviewed data from more than 9,000 studies. Being a parent can be tough. In general, animals that care for many offspring die young, at least in species where parents are not helped by others. However, in some species things are different and parents r
