Aquaculture and the displacement of fisheries captures

In modern aquaculture, animal-production technology is used to increase aquatic food sources. Such controlled rearing of seafood can, in principle, shift the pressure off wild stocks and aquatic ecosys- tems by reducing fishing activities, which may advance marine conservation goals. We examined resource displacement—the reduced consumption of a resource due to its replacement with a more environm

Rhinarium temperature dynamics in domestic dogs

Many mammals have specialized nose-tips with glabrous and often wet skin, called rhinaria. The function of the rhinarium is unknown in most species. Rhinaria differ not only in shape and skin structure, but also in skin temperature. They are considerably colder in carnivorans than in herbivorous artio- and perissodactyls. Domestic dogs are carnivorans and their noses often feel cold, such that the

In this study, the presence of anisakid nematodes in the European eels (Anguilla anguilla L.) was investigated. A total of 30 specimens of eels were caught by local fishermen from the Buyuk Menderes River, Turkey. Nematoda species of Raphidascaris acus was found from eels. This is the first record of R. acus from A. anguilla from Turkish waters. The ribosomal DNA (rDNA) internal transcribed spacer

FTO genotype and weight loss : systematic review and meta-analysis of 9563 individual participant data from eight randomised controlled trials

OBJECTIVE: To assess the effect of the FTO genotype on weight loss after dietary, physical activity, or drug based interventions in randomised controlled trials.DESIGN: Systematic review and random effects meta-analysis of individual participant data from randomised controlled trials.DATA SOURCES: Ovid Medline, Scopus, Embase, and Cochrane from inception to November 2015.ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA FOR S

InAs epitaxial lateral overgrowth of W masks

The conditions for successful epitaxial lateral overgrowth of W patterns by InAs using low-pressure metalorganic vapour phase epitaxy were studied. The substrates used were InAs (0 0 1) wafers and the range of growth temperatures between 500 and 600 degrees C. The selective growth was investigated as a function of the V/III-ratio on W-ring test structures and wires oriented in different directions

The possibilities of bush fallows with changing roles of agriculture - An analysis combining remote sensing and interview data from Sudanese drylands

The lengths of fallows have decreased in many parts of the Sahel due to agricultural expansion, which can have negative impacts on crop production when few other ways to improve soil fertility exist. However, the dynamics of agricultural expansion may change because of the changing role of agriculture in society due to increased livelihood diversification outside of agriculture. The results of thi

Understanding Admissibility

Lewis' concept of admissibility was introduced as an integral part of his famous Principal Principle; the principle that initial rational/reasonable belief should conform to objective chance unless there is evidence to the contrary. At that time Lewis offered only the rough and ready characterisation that evidence not to the contrary of such dependence is admissible. This, together with some suffi

Functional Mockup Interface 2.0: The Standard for Tool independent Exchange of Simulation Models

The Functional Mockup Interface (FMI) is a tool independent standard for the exchange of dynamic models and for co simulation. The first version, FMI 1.0, was published in 2010. Already more than 30 tools support FMI 1.0. In this paper an overview about the recently published version 2.0 of FMI is given that combines the formerly separated interfaces for Model Exchange and Co-Simulation in one sta

Improvements of task performance in daily life after acquired brain injury using commonly available everyday technology.

Purpose. To investigate how individualised occupation-based interventions with commonly available everyday technology (ET) can compensate for perceived difficulties with daily life tasks after an aquired brain injury (ABI) and improve satisfaction with occupational performance. Method. This intervention study was designed as a multiple case study according to Yin. Ten men and women with an ABI (tr

Motion sickness symptoms may be reduced by the Valsalva maneuver : a pilot study

Background: Motion sickness (MS) is a common complaint during most modes of travel. Several medications can be used to treat MS but are often accompanied by side-effects. Objective: To assess whether performing the Valsalva manoeuvre can influence the subjective feeling of MS in healthy individuals. Methods: We included 16 healthy participants (4 female) that underwent two sessions of MS induction

Spin rotation effects in diffractive electroproduction of heavy quarkonia

In this work we present for the first time the comprehensive study of the Melosh spin rotation effects in diffractive electroproduction of S-wave heavy quarkonia off a nucleon target. Such a study has been performed within the color dipole approach using, as an example and a reference point, two popular parametrizations of the dipole cross section and two potentials describing the interaction bet

Progress in treatment and risk stratification of neuroblastoma: Impact on future clinical and basic research.

Close international collaboration between pediatric oncologists has led to marked improvements in the cure of patients, seen as a long-term overall survival rate of about 80%. Despite this progress, neuroblastoma remains a challenging disease for both clinicians and researchers. Major clinical problems include lack of acceptable cure rates in high-risk neuroblastoma and potential overtreatment of

HPV-16 E2 contributes to induction of HPV-16 late gene expression by inhibiting early polyadenylation.

We provide evidence that the human papillomavirus (HPV) E2 protein regulates HPV late gene expression. High levels of E2 caused a read-through at the early polyadenylation signal pAE into the late region of the HPV genome, thereby inducing expression of L1 and L2 mRNAs. This is a conserved property of E2 of both mucosal and cutaneous HPV types. Induction could be reversed by high levels of HPV-16

The Lepidoptera fauna of the Danish island of Anholt is surveyed, and 1160 species are recorded. Anholt is situated in Kattegat 44 km from Denmark and 47 km from Sweden. The history and environment of the island are briefly discussed, with special focus on the flora, and earlier studies of the Lepidopterera fauna of Anholt are dealt with. The present study is in first hand based on material collec

Computational modelling of cancerous mutations in the EGFR/ERK signalling pathway

Background: The Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor (EGFR) activated Extracellular-signal Regulated Kinase (ERK) pathway is a critical cell signalling pathway that relays the signal for a cell to proliferate from the plasma membrane to the nucleus. Deregulation of the EGFR/ERK pathway due to alterations affecting the expression or function of a number of pathway components has long been associated wi

Novel Vinylpyridine Based Cationic MIP Monoliths for Enantiomer Separation in CEC

Cationic vinylpyridine based molecularly imprinted polymer monoliths were, for the first time, applied to enantiomer separation using capillary electrochromatography. In order to map the synthesis conditions under which superporous monoliths are obtained, capillary columns were prepared by an in situ polymerization technique using varying monomer and porogen compositions. Both electrolyte pH and p
