Direct costs of glaucoma management following initiation of medical therapy. A simulation model based on an observational study of glaucoma treatment in Germany

Background: Economic evaluation of new treatments in the field of glaucoma represents a challenge. In the absence of a clear epidemiological link between intra-ocular pressure (IOP) and disease progression to blindness, the economic impact of treatments that lower IOP on long-term outcome cannot be estimated. As an alternative, effectiveness may be expressed as the ability to control IOP over time

Impact of activated sludge ozonation on filamentous bacteria viability and possible added benefits

Ozone was applied to return activated sludge in full-scale to study how ozone impacts filamentous bacteria viability (Live/Dead®). Additionally, the ozonated sludges were subjected to anaerobic digestion trials and analysis of micropollutants. Ozone treatment (3-4.8 g O3/kg TSS) improved the settling properties of the sludge by lowering the diluted sludge volume with 7-35%. Pictures as language

The purpose of this lecture is to shed light on a potential, and invite those who are interested to join in and make use of this potential. Here is the background: Starting with the Isaac Project in 1993, Certec has developed a technological/educational concept based on pictures as language for people with limited spoken language or none at all. There are a number of case studies (our own and ot

Peatland trees record strong and temporally stable hydroclimate information in tree-ring δ13C and δ18O

Peatland trees are valuable archives of paleoclimatic information; however, gaps persist in understanding the relationships between tree growth, peatland hydrology, and hydroclimate variables. While previous research in peatlands has mainly focused on tree-ring widths (TRW), yielding inconclusive results, the potential of stable carbon (δ13C) and oxygen (δ18O) isotopes in tree rings remains unexpl

Boredom in Meetings

For managers, meetings may be an arena “where the action is”: situations to display competence and moral character. However, others may feel less involved, and meetings may be experienced as nonsense, as meaningless and worthless. A recurring theme in various studies is complaints about meetings, particularly regarding their frequency, their emptiness, and the forced attendance, taking time from w

How Tolerant Should Inflation-Targeting Central Banks Be? Selecting the Proper Tolerance Band : Lessons from Sweden

Should an inflation-targeting central bank have an explicit tolerance band around its inflation target? This paper provides an answer derived from the Swedish experience. The Riksbank is exceptional in the sense that it first adopted and later abolished an explicit band and is currently considering bringing it back. We conclude that the band should be explicit for several reasons. Most important,

Sum rules and physical bounds for a particulate slab --- transmission

Two different sum rules for transmission of the coherent electromagnetic fieldby a particulate slab are established. The particles are assumed sphericaland randomly located, and the slab is illuminated by a plane wave at normalincidence. These sum rules are obtained assuming the particles are passivescatterers, and satisfy energy conservation and causality conditions. The sumrules are then employe

The Mesolithic hunter-gatherer camp site at Sammakko in Norrbotten, northernmost Sweden - archaeological finds and palaeoenvironmental reconstruction

A small Mesolithic campsite near Sammakko in northernmost Sweden has been identified through its abundance of burnt bone and quartz refuse from stone tool manufacturing/ maintenance. Radiocarbon dating places hunter-gatherer activity here around 8900 years ago, 1800 years later than the oldest known settlement in Norrbotten, the Aareavaara site. Sediment stratigraphy in nearby lake basins suggests

Inequity in waiting for cataract surgery - an analysis of data from the Swedish National Cataract Register.

Swedish Health and Medical Services act states that good care should be given to the entire population on equal terms. Still studies show that access to care in Sweden differ related to for example gender and socioeconomic variables. One of the areas in Swedish health care that has attracted attention for potential inequity in access is Cataract Extraction (CE). Previous studies of access to CE in

Intra-Aneurysm Sac Pressure and Clinical Results after Endovascular Repair of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms

Ca ¼ av bråcken debutAIM: The aim was to evaluate the results of endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) of abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA) in terms of intra-AAA pressure and clinical outcomes. METHODS AND RESULTS: 0.014-inch guide-wire-mounted tip-pressure sensors were used for direct intra-aneurysm sac pressure measurement (DISP) through translumbar puncture of the AAA. Mean Pressure Index was calculated (MPI) as the p

The Role of Mitochondria, Oxidative Stress, and the Radical-binding Protein A1M in Cultured Porcine Retina.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between oxidative stress, antioxidant defense, mitochondrial structure, and biomechanical tissue support in the isolated porcine retina. Methods: Full-thickness retinal sheets were isolated from adult porcine eyes. Retinas were cultured for 2 or 48 h using (1) a previously established low-support explant protocol with photoreceptors

Forehearing words : Pre-activation of word endings at word onset

Occurring at rates up to 6-7 syllables per second, speech perception and understanding involves rapid identification of speech sounds and pre-activation of morphemes and words. Using event-related potentials (ERPs) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), we investigated the time-course and neural sources of pre-activation of word endings as participants heard the beginning of unfolding wOccurring at rates up to 6-7 syllables per second, speech perception and understanding involves rapid identification of speech sounds and pre-activation of morphemes and words. Visual feedback to sonar clicks

Visual response to dolphin echolocation It is well known that dolphins use echolocation but how about watching what actually happens? A device that shows the audience some of the information contained within the emitted ultrasonic waves. It is a small fish look-alike device that is created to simulate how the dolphins behave while hunting. By picking up the echolocation signals sent out from the

Intellectual Capital’s Leverage on Market Value

The purpose of this thesis is to visualize whether there is a correlation between the intellectual capital and the market value among Swedish companies, listed on the Stockholm stock exchange. The purpose is furthermore to enlighten if there are factors that might alter the strength of this correlation. By using these results the aim is to further examine a possible indicator for leveraging the ef

Corporate Citizenship and HIV/AIDS in the Workplace: What influences the implementation of workplace programmes in Botswana?

The specific aim of the study was to ascertain what may influence the implementation of HIV/AIDS workplace programmes in two global organisations operating in Botswana. A case study approach was applied, focusing on two case companies defining themselves as good corporate citizens and in relation to this are implementing workplace programmes applying the same model and service provider. It was fou
