Long-term benefits of progressive resistance training in chronic stroke: A 4-year follow-up.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the long-term benefits of progressive resistance training in chronic stroke. DESIGN: A 4-year follow-up of a randomized controlled trial of progressive resistance training. SUBJECTS: Eighteen women and men (mean age 66 (standard deviation 4) from the original group of 24 post-stroke participants. METHODS: The training group (n = 11) had participated in supervised progres

Places to Think With, Books to Think About: Words, Experience and the Decolonization of Knowledge in the Bolivian Andes

Drawing on his anthropological field work in Bolivia in the midst of profound social and political change, the author examines the attitudes of various interlocutors toward knowledge, and in particular the important differences between “hegemonic theories of knowledge and indigenous epistemologies, between propositional and non-propositional knowledge, between knowledge of the world and knowledge

On the equations of motion in constrained multibody dynamics

The equations of motion for a constrained multibody system are derived from a continuum mechanical point of view. This will allow for the presence of rigid, as well as deformable, parts in the multibody system together with kinematical constraints. The approach leads to the classical Lagrange-d'Alembert equations of motion under constraint conditions. The generalized forces appearing in the equati

Integrating Reciprocal Perspectives: On Georges Gurvitch’s Theory of Immediate Jural Experience

This paper suggests that many of Gurvitch's ideas, which were originally presented in an abstract fashion, are still highly pertinent to socio-legal analysis. They may be employed in empirical research in a revised form, which would make them receptive to operationalisation. To this end, I shall focus on some of the main theoretical ideas developed by Gurvitch, reinterpreting them critically and i

A survey of hunting, and attitudes towards hunting in Sweden from 17th to 20thh century

Whole chromosome gain does not in itself confer cancer-like chromosomal instability.

Constitutional aneuploidy is typically caused by a single-event meiotic or early mitotic error. In contrast, somatic aneuploidy, found mainly in neoplastic tissue, is attributed to continuous chromosomal instability. More debated as a cause of aneuploidy is aneuploidy itself; that is, whether aneuploidy per se causes chromosomal instability, for example, in patients with inborn aneuploidy. We have

Reorganizing Life: A Qualitative Study of Fathers' Lived Experience in the 3Years Subsequent to the Very Preterm Birth of Their Child.

This is the second part of a study that is following eight Swedish fathers of very preterm children using qualitative interviews. The aim was to illuminate fathers' lived experience of the 3years since the birth of their very preterm child using a hermeneutic phenomenological method. The fathers described their lived experience as a process of reorganizing life, which constituted the overarching t

Genetic Information and Investment in Human Capital

In a game of incomplete information we analyze the consequences of giving an employer access to imperfect genetic information about his employees. The employer chooses whether to invest in the employee and the employee chooses a life style. We derive the condition for markets of information services to exist and the conditions for when it is beneficial to the various parties. In one specification

Skin ulcerations as manifestation of vasculopathy in neurofibromatosis

Vascular involvement in neurofibromatosis sometimes occurs and usually affects larger blood vessels of internal organs. We describe an unusual case of a now 41-year-old man with extensive skin involvement with ulcerations and histopathologic features of fibromuscular dysplasia, which has not been previously reported in the skin.

Implementation level of shipper and transport provider practices with an impact on the load factor

The purpose of this paper is to examine current practices of load factor utilisation of road transport. An interview study of five shippers and two transport providers were conducted. The research shows that transport providers seem to work efficiently with operational practices to improve the load factor, but the load factor seems not to be highly prioritised when it comes to strategic decisions.

REFRACTIVE: An Open Source Tool to Extract Knowledge from Syntactic and Semantic Relations

The extraction of semantic propositions has proven instrumental in applications like IBM Watson (Ferrucci, 2012) and in Google’s knowledge graph (Singhal, 2012). One of the core components of IBM Watson is the PRISMATIC knowledge base consisting of one billion propositions extracted from the English version of Wikipedia and the New York Times (Fan et al., 2010). However, extracting the proposition

The asparaginyl endopeptidase legumain after experimental stroke.

Various proteases in the brain contribute to ischemic brain injury. We investigated the involvement of the asparaginyl endopeptidase legumain after experimental stroke. On the basis of gene array studies and in situ hybridizations, we observed an increase of legumain expression in the peri-infarct area of rats after transient occlusion of the middle cerebral artery (MCAO) for 120 mins with a maxim

Tumor necrosis factor receptor-1 is essential for LPS-induced sensitization and tolerance to oxygen-glucose deprivation in murine neonatal organotypic hippocampal slices.

Inflammation and ischemia have a synergistic damaging effect in the immature brain. The role of tumor necrosis factor (TNF) receptors 1 and 2 in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced sensitization and tolerance to oxygen-glucose deprivation (OGD) was evaluated in neonatal murine hippocampal organotypic slices. Hippocampal slices from balb/c, C57BL/6 TNFR1(-/-), TNFR2(-/-), and wild-type (WT) mice obtai

Assessment of dependence in daily activities combined with a self-rating of difficulty.

OBJECTIVE: To study the information gained by extending a well-established instrument of dependence/independence in activities of daily living with a self-rating of difficulty, and to illustrate the relevance and usefulness of this combined approach with cross-national data. DESIGN AND SUBJECTS: Cross-sectional survey study data collected with 1918 very old persons in 5 European countries. METHODS

Muses and Patrons : Cultures of Natural Philosophy in Seventeenth Century Scandinavia

This study analyses the development of natural philosophy in Scandinavia in the 16th and 17th century. Rather than dealing with individual natural philosophers and ideas, it evolves around groups of natural philsophers - the Bartholin family and the former assistants of Tycho Brahe in Denmark, the Rudbeck family in Sweden. The study of nature is put into a cultural, religious, social, and politica
