An artifact in measurements of in vivo light-induced absorbance changes

The effects of scattered actinic radiation on photomultipliers (Hamamatsu R-562) were investigated. Using cotton-wool to model dense biological preparations, it was found that the scattered actinic radiation received by the photomultiplier gives rise to phytochrome-like signals. This demonstrated the necessity to shield the photomultiplier from scattered actinic light for sensitive measurements wi

Assessing the Importance of Letter Pairs in Reading—Parafoveal Processing Is Not the Only View: Reply to Inhoff, Radach, Eiter, and Skelly (2003)

D. Briihl and A. W. Inhoff (1995) found that exterior letter pairs showed no privileged status in reading when letter pairs were presented as parafoveal primes. However, T. R. Jordan, S. M. Thomas, G. R. Patching, and K. C. Scott-Brown (2003) used a paradigm that (a) allowed letter pairs to exert influence at any point in the reading process, (b) overcame problems with the stimulus manipulations u

The Quebec classification and a new Swedish classification for whiplash-associated disorders in relation to life satisfaction in patients at high risk of chronic functional impairment and disability

Unlike the Quebec classification system, which is based primarily on pathoanatomy, a new Swedish classification system is based on the site of functional impairment and disability. A prospective study was performed on 85 patients with whiplash-associated disorders grade II according to the Quebec classification. The patients were examined 3-36 months following trauma. A team of professionals with

The philosophy of Joseph Margolis

In this article I focus on some of Joseph Margolis's contributions to medical ethics. I first discuss some of Margolis's normative and metaphysical views on death and abortion, particularly in his early work Negativities, as well as some of his metaphysical assumptions. Then these views and assumptions are related to his theory of persons and, by implication, his theory of culture, set forth in a

Ultraviolet-B stimulates grana formation in chloroplasts in the African desert plant Dimorphotheca pluvialis

Chloroplasts isolated from a plant species, Dimorphotheca pluvialis Moench (Asteraceae), grown under visible light without supplementary UV-B radiation, have poor grana development. The dominant components in the membrane organizations are doublets and triplets of stroma lamellae. However, such chloroplasts possess the capacity for electron transfer through the whole photosynthetic chain, based on

Gating of cutaneous input to cerebellar climbing fibres during a reaching task in the cat

1. Task-dependent modulation of cutaneous input to climbing fibres projecting to the C1, C2 and C3 zones in the cerebellar paravermal lobule V was investigated in awake cats during performance of a reaching task. 2. Climbing fibre responses resulting from low intensity (non-noxious) electrical stimulation of the ipsilateral superficial radial nerve were recorded as extracellular field potentials i

Concentration of acid hydrolysate by reverse osmosis and mechanical vapor recompression evaporation

The aim of this project was to investigate possible methods for the concentration of acid hydrolyzate obtained from hydrolyzing wood. A detailed study of concentration of sugar solution by reverse osmosis, RO, has been performed as well as a comparison with mechanical vapor recompression evaporation. The comparison has, in this specific case, shown that RO is currently more expensive. The result i

Hypoglycemic brain injury: metabolic and structural findings in rat cerebellar cortex during profound insulin-induced hypoglycemia and in the recovery period following glucose administration

Previous results have shown that severe, prolonged hypoglycemia leads to neuronal cell damage in, among other structures, the cerebral cortex and the hippocampus but not the cerebellum. In order to study whether or not this sparing of cerebellar cells is due to preservation of cerebellar energy stores, hypoglycemia of sufficient severity to abolish spontaneous EEG activity was induced for 30 and 6

Endothelial relaxing 5-hydroxytryptamine receptors in the rat jugular vein: similarity with the 5-hydroxytryptamine1C receptor

Serotonin (5-HT) at low concentrations induces an endothelium-dependent relaxation in the rat jugular vein mediated via a 5-HT1-like receptor. The receptor mediating this relaxation was characterized in vitro using agonists and antagonists in segments precontracted with prostaglandin F2 alpha in the presence of the 5-HT2 receptor antagonist ketanserin. The following substances acted as agonists, w

Simultaneous and continuous measurement of choroid plexus blood flow and cerebrospinal fluid production: effects of vasoactive intestinal polypeptide

Using laser-Doppler flowmetry during ventriculocisternal perfusion with inulin-[14C]carboxylic acid, choroid plexus blood flow (CPBF) and CSF production were measured simultaneously in rats during periods of 3 h. Blood flow and CSF production decreased only slightly during control experiments. The effect of vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP) was studied at different concentrations of the pept

Treatment with a GnRH analogue: effects on hemostatic risk factors for thrombo-embolic disease

OBJECTIVE--Steroid hormones, especially estrogens, are known to affect hemostatic risk factors for thromboembolism, cardiovascular disease, and stroke. We examined these risk factors during depression of the serum estradiol concentration by a GnRH analogue. DESIGN--Patients were treated with a GnRH analogue, goserelin (Zoladex), 3.6 mg/inj monthly, for a period of 6 months. Blood samples were coll

WE-14, a chromogranin A - Derived neuropeptide

The neuropeptide WE-14 is derived from the posttranslational processing of chromogranin A (CgA). While CgA is expressed in a preponderance of neuroendocrine cells, WE-14 is generated in a distinct subpopulation of CgA-immunopositive cells, most notably in the adrenal, pituitary, and parathyroid glands. Physiological and pharmacological studies have demonstrated that CgA is cleaved to generate WE-1

J-dependent lifetimes of the 2s2p3p 4De and 2s2p3d 4Fo terms in the boron isoelectronic sequence

Lifetimes of fine-structure levels in 2s2p3p D-4 and 2s2p3d F-4(o) quartets are calculated in the boron isoelectronic sequence, for C II to F V, using a multiconfiguration Hartree-Fock approach. These quartets are known from earlier experimental and theoretical studies to have different lifetimes for different J-levels, owing to spin-induced transitions, mainly to doublet states in 2s(2)2p and 2s2

U46619 (a thromboxane A2 mimetic) induces airflow obstruction and airway plasma extravasation in the guinea pig: the role of histamine, cyclooxygenase metabolites, leukotrienes and PAF

The aim of the present study was to characterize the airway effects of U46619, a stable thromboxane A2 mimetic, instilled into the trachea of guinea pigs in vivo, and to investigate the role of different mediators in these effects. The airflow obstruction was evaluated by measurement of airway insufflation pressure (P1) and plasma extravasation by quantification of Evans Blue dye (EBD) in airways.

Being in the Field: Reflections on a Mi’kmaq Kekunit Ceremony

This article has a threefold purpose. First, it seeks to show how modern rituals among Mi'kmaq traditionalists in eastern Canada are anchored in and derive their rationale from modern reserve existence. Two rituals are described, a kekunit godparent ceremony for a 14-year-old girl and a sweat lodge ceremony later the same evening. Second, the article also provides an example of the paradoxes of "p
