Simulation of Physical Disabilities in Computer Designs of Environments

This paper presents some methods of improving the simulation of human movements. Since we are developing a tool for the planning of environments for physically disabled persons, it is important to consider the future user’s abilities in particular. Methods such as the use of human models, acquiring joint ranges and motions (from MacReflex and DataGlove systems), editing postures and motions, setti

The Morality of Transparency: A Comparison of NGOs and Business Ethics

Paper presented at Workshop on the Sociology of Transparency, Univ. Osnabruck, Nov. 2015. Disclosure and transparency, being open so that others can look deeper into to your organization, is not just a requirement imposed by government regulations or funding agencies. Transparency is also tied to a value of authenticity, sincerity and ethics. There is moral dimension to transparency. Being open is

Evaluating predictive performance of statistical models explaining wild bee abundance in a mass-flowering crop

Wild bee populations are threatened by current agricultural practices in many parts of the world, which may put pollination services and crop yields at risk. Loss of pollination services can potentially be predicted by models that link bee abundances with landscape-scale land-use, but there is little knowledge on the degree to which these statistical models are transferable across time and space.

Ecotypic divergence in Crepis tectorum (Asteraceae): inferring trait lability and correlational constraints from hormonally manipulated phenotypes

Despite long‐standing interest in the evolutionary role of plant hormones, relatively few studies have used hormonally manipulated phenotypes to address questions about phenotypic evolution in plants. In the present investigation, I subjected plants of Crepis tectorum subsp. pumila to simple gibberellin (GA) treatments under both field and greenhouse conditions to assess developmental lability andDespite long‐standing interest in the evolutionary role of plant hormones, relatively few studies have used hormonally manipulated phenotypes to address questions about phenotypic evolution in plants. The Elusive ‘Docent Grade’ : Evaluative Cultures in and Beyond the Swedish Humanities (1876–1969)

In the late nineteenth and for much of the twentieth century, an academic career in Sweden was highly dependent on what grade a scholar’s doctoral dissertation was awarded. Unless receiving a so-called “docent grade”, basically declaring the scholar eligible for seeking the title of docent (associate professor), the prospects of maintaining an academic career were bleak. Throughout the period, thi
