Extended x-ray absorption fine structure measurements have been used to characterize the low-temperature, thermally induced structural relaxation of amorphous InP. We show reductions in both chemical and structural disorder associated with homopolar and heteropolar bonding, respectively, are operative during structural relaxation of this amorphous compound semiconductor. The latter is analogous to

Effluent from alkali extraction of chlorinated pulp was treated with ultrafiltration (UF). Three different ultrafiltration (UF) membranes were tested. The permeate from one of the UF membranes was further treated with reverse osmosis (RO). Titration curves for the permeates from the different UF and R0 membranes were determined. The concentration of charged compounds was calculated from the titrat

1. The topographical organization of mossy fibre input to the forelimb area of the paravermal C3 zone in cerebellar lobules IV and V was investigated in barbiturate-anaesthetized cats and compared with the previously described microzonal organization of climbing fibre input to the same part of the cortex. Recordings were made in the Purkinje cell and granule cell layers from single climbing fibre

The screen-printed four-electrode system was used as the amperometric transducer for determination of phenols and pesticides using immobilised tyrosinase. peroxidase. acetylcholinesterase and butyrylcholinesterase. Acetylthiocholine chloride was chosen as substrate for cholinesterases to measure inhibition by pesticides, hydrogen peroxide served as co-substrate for peroxidase to measure phenols. T

A prospective randomized double-blind trial was performed comparing conventional low-dose heparin with a LMWH fragment (Kabi 2165, Fragmin) for thromboprophylaxis in elective general abdominal surgical patients. The first dose of the fragment was given in the evening before surgery, and thereafter every evening. There were 1002 analyzable patients, 826 having received correct prophylaxis. Sixty th

Singular and supersingular finite rank perturbations of self-adjoint operators are studied using methods from renormalization theory for quantum fields. It is shown that the ideas from dimensional and Pauli-Villars regulatizations can be applied to determine uniquely certain finite rank supersingular perturbations. Approach is based on the regularization of homogeneous singular quadratic forms.

I samband med omorganiseringen till den s kIn the past few decades a comprehensive restructuring of psychiatric care has taken place in Sweden. The activities of the traditional closed institutions have been curtailed through a drastic reduction in the number of beds available in such institutions. "Day treatment," has arisen as a new form of intensive outpatient care in the new, geographically localized psychiatric care of patients with l

Medierna harThe prevalence of overweight and obesity is rising each year not only on a national but also on a global level. The future scenario is troublesome. The media are among the most important social institutions in influencing people’s knowledge, perceptions and actions. The media provide citizens with health messages and contribute thereby to their health development. This dissertation deals with two

Objective To compare the performances of 2 methods, telomerase repeat amplification protocol (TRAP) in situ and antibodies to the hTERT protein, in assessing telomerase activity. Study Design TRAP in situ and immunomercial antibody (NCL-hTERT) was performed on 54 body cavity effusions. The results were compared and correlated to diagnosis. Results Thirty-four effitsions from patients with verified

M. A. Persinger (2002) claimed that transcranial magnetic stimulation with weak, complex magnetic fields evokes mystical experiences. However, in a double-blind experiment, P. Granqvist, M. Fredrikson, P. Unge, A. Hagenfeldt, S. Valind., et al. (2005) found no effects of field exposure on mystical experiences (N = 89), though a minority of participants reported spontaneous mystical experiences. Fo

OBJECTIVES: To study bowel ischaemia in transfemorally placed endoluminal grafting (TPEG) for abdominal aortic aneurysms, and any relation to cytokine response or postoperative fever. DESIGN: Prospective not randomised. University hospital setting. MATERIAL: Fourteen cases of conventional surgery and 23 cases of endovascular technique for infrarenal abdominal aortic aneurysm repair. METHODS: Tonom

Sheep and goats are some of the most important animals in prehistoric Scandinavia. The habitus of the animals was used and transformed into cultural categories. Owing to their important and long-term utility they were ritualised during the pre-Christian periods. The role of these animals and the attitudes towards them in and beyond Norse paganism is discussed with habitus perspectives applied to t

Based on the previous finding that 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) co-exists with norepinephrine (NE) in cerebrovascular sympathetic nerve fibers and can be released during electrical nerve stimulation, the postjunctional interaction between the two amines was studied in isolated basilar artery of guinea pig. A low concentration of 5-HT, which in itself has little or no constrictive effect, potentiated

Vascular injuries operated on during a 30-year period (1955-1984) were analyzed. There has been significant increase of such injuries, particularly the iatrogenic types. The total incidence per 100,000 population and year rose from 11.0 to 26.6. Various angiographic and catheterization techniques were responsible for the iatrogenic increase. The noniatrogenic vascular injuries not infrequently wer

AIMS: To compare the incidence of myocardial infarction and death in non-diabetic subjects with and without insulin resistance. METHODS: Population-based prospective cohort study, in Malmö, Sweden, of 4748 non-diabetic subjects (60% women), aged 46-68 years, with no history of myocardial infarction or stroke. The prevalence of insulin resistance was established by the homeostasis model assessment

High-order laser guide star performance for the Euro50 telescope is analyzed. Focus anisoplanatism residual errors using multiple LGSs are obtained by numerical simulations. Results calculated for annual mean conditions at the La Palma site show that, considering only focus anisoplanatism, it will be possible to obtain a Strehl ratio of 0.72 similar to 0.82 at 2.2 mum using 13 LGSs. A Strehl ratio

Flow field-flow fractionation (FFF) has previously been used in successful fractionation and characterisation of the ultra-large wheat protein glutenin. The many parameters, which may influence the retention behaviour, especially when analysing extremely high-molecular-mass samples such as glutenin, are here reported. Size determination from the sample retention time, using FFF theory, will as a r
