Given the strong coupling between the carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) cycles, there is substantial interest in understanding how N availability affects C cycling in terrestrial ecosystems, especially in ecosystems limited by N. However, most studies in temperate and boreal forests have focused on the effects of N addition on tree growth. By comparison, less is known about the effects of N availability

The increase of wolves in Scandinavia is associated with socio-ecological conflicts, and the conservation and management of this species is as much a political and socio-cultural challenge as a biological matter. One component in this conflict is people's feeling of fear, but there have been very few evaluations of management interventions aimed at addressing human fear of wolves. Based on the the

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) with its extensive forest cover is the biggest target country for the Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+) mechanism in Africa. Despite high levels of gender inequality in rural DRC, the impacts of REDD+ interventions on gender have not been sufficiently addressed. This study examines the gender dimension at two project sites i

We consider the problem of migrating keys from TPM 1.2 to the backwardsincompatible TPM 2.0. The major differences betweenthe two versions introduce several challenges for deployed systems whensupport for TPM 2.0 is introduced. We show how TPM 2.0 support can beintroduced while still maintaining the functionality specified by TPM 1.2,allowing a smoother transition to the newer version. Specificall

In this paper we study the Z, (Formula presented.) jet, (Formula presented.) , and (Formula presented.) jet production in pp collisions at the LHC considering different models for the intrinsic charm content of the proton. We analyze the impact of the intrinsic charm in the rapidity and transverse momentum distributions for these different processes. Our results indicated that differently from the

Using high resolution and ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy we show that the catalytically active FeO $$-{2}$$ 2 trilayer films grown on Pt(111) are very active for water dissociation, in contrast to inert FeO(111) bilayer films. The FeO $$-{2}$$ 2 trilayer is so active for water dissociation that it becomes hydroxylated upon formation, regardless of the applied preparation method.

In this paper we revisit the double vector meson production in (Formula presented.) interactions at heavy ion collisions and present, by the first time, predictions for the (Formula presented.) and (Formula presented.) production in proton–nucleus and proton–proton collisions. In order to obtain realistic predictions for rapidity distributions and total cross sections for the double vector product

We investigated the vertical distribution, storage, landscape partitioning, and spatial variability of soil amorphous silica (ASi) at four different sites underlain by continuous permafrost and representative of mountainous and lowland tundra, in the circum-Arctic region. Based on a larger set of data, we present the first estimate of the ASi soil reservoir (0-1 m depth) in circum-Arctic tundra te

Let (Formula presented.) be a bounded, simply connected ℂ-convex domain. Let α ∈ ℤ+ n and let f be a function on Ω which is separately (Formula presented.) -smooth with respect to zj (by which we mean jointly (Formula presented.) -smooth with respect to Rezj, Imzj). If f is α-analytic on Ω\f−1(0), then f is α-analytic on Ω. The result is well-known for the case αi = 1, 1 ⩽ i ⩽ n, even when

We investigate the mechanism responsible for the formation of mesoporous silica formed with the so-called costructure directing agent (CSDA) route. The synthesis relies on the interaction between silica source (tetraethylorthosilicate), cationic surfactant (C18H37N+(CH3)2(CH2)3N+(CH3)3Br2), and CSDA (carboxyethylsilanetriol), which results in a material functionalized with carboxylic groups. Depen

In this paper, we present a detailed comparison of the bottom production in gluon-gluon, photon-gluon, photon-photon, Pomeron-gluon, Pomeron-Pomeron and Pomeron-photon interactions at the LHC. The transverse momentum, pseudorapidity and ξ dependencies of the cross sections are calculated at LHC energy using the Forward Physics Monte Carlo, which allows us to obtain realistic predictions for the bo

Trust is a valuable relational asset for companies. A high level of public trust can bring a number of benefits to business organizations, including increased customer satisfaction, higher investor confidence, and fewer regulatory restrictions (Barney and Hansen, 1994; García-Marzá, 2005; Ingenhoff and Sommer, 2010; Pirson and Malhotra, 2011). But trust is also a fragile commodity; it takes a lo

We propose a signal-to-noise criterion which predicts whether a feature of a given size and scattering strength, placed inside a larger object, can be retrieved with two common X-ray imaging techniques: coherent diffraction imaging and projection microscopy. This criterion, based on how efficiently these techniques detect the scattered photons and validated through simulations, shows in general th

Directed differentiation of human induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) into retinal pigmented epithelium (RPE) holds great promise in cell replacement therapy for patients suffering from degenerative eye diseases, including age-related macular degeneration (AMD). In this study, we generated iPSCs from human dermal fibroblasts (HDFs) by electroporation with episomal plasmid vectors encoding OCT4,

The topological crystalline insulator tin telluride is known to host superconductivity when doped with indium (Sn1-xInxTe), and for low indium content (x=0.04) it is known that the topological surface states are preserved. Here we present the growth, characterization, and angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy analysis of samples with much heavier In doping (up to x≈0.4), a regime where the sup

An extensive phenomenological study of the Drell-Yan (DY) process in pp collisions at various energies is performed in the color dipole framework. Besides previously studied γ∗ production we also include the Z0 contribution relevant at large dilepton invariant masses. We investigate the DY cross section differential in invariant mass, rapidity and transverse momentum of the dilepton pair in pp col

Food quality is greatly dependent on the security of the food packaging process, which has been widely developed to inhibit food spoilage and to prolong the shelf life for food products. Gas in scattering media absorption spectroscopy is used as an optical noninvasive method to estimate the gas content in food packages. A diode laser with central wavelength of 760 nm is used to record an oxygen spe

Closed-loop positivity of feedback interconnections of positive monotone nonlinear systems is investigated. It is shown that an instantaneous gain condition on the open-loop systems which implies feedback well-posedness also guarantees feedback positivity. Furthermore, the notion of integral linear constraints (ILC) is utilised as a tool to characterise uncertainty in positive feedback systems. Ro

In this paper, we present two distributed algorithms to compute an equilibrium, that is optimal with respect to strictly convex and separable cost functions, for controlled traffic flow dynamics over networks under constant exogenous inflows. The dynamics is modeled in continuous time by the Cell Transmission Model and a non-FIFO Dynamic Network Loading Model, with traffic control. The two algorit

Experiments for measuring gas diffusion through porous alumina ceramics are described. With the gas in scattering media absorption spectroscopy (GASMAS) technique, gaseous oxygen signals are measured continuously during the gas diffusion process. It is experimentally demonstrated that the time-dependence of the transient oxygen signal is described by an exponential curve. Moreover, the effect on g
