Sounding Museums

An interdisciplinary symposium on the functions and aesthetics of sound in museums 2019-04-09 Sound Environment Centre hosted the interdisciplinary symposium on the functions and aesthetics of sound in museums. Sounding MuseumsWithin recent years sound has played a more and more prominent role in museums. Fine art galleries now integrate sound as part of the aesthetic expressions exhibited meanwhi

Polarization transfer solid-state NMR for studying soft matter: From surfactants to the stratum corneum

Popular Abstract in English The word “motion” usually brings to mind movement from point A to point B. In the world of chemistry, this kind of motion is typically referred to as translational motion. Its consequences are experienced by us every time we smell a scent in the air or watch a dye spread in water. The fragrance is nothing else than molecules that fly in the air. Colour is molecules swimThe work presented in this thesis is dedicated to theoretical development, experimental testing and application of polarization transfer solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (PT ssNMR). PT ssNMR is an analytical tool which provides detailed information about molecular mobility in model or simple soft matter systems at the low water content regime, enabling the creation of phase diagrams. Soft ma

Food-Related Gram-Positive Bacteria: Enterotoxin A Expression in Staphylococcus aureus and a New Regulation Mechanism in Lactococcus lactis

Popular Abstract in English Foods, microorganisms, and humans have been tightly associated from the start of human history. Foods are not only the source of nutrients for humans, but also good media for microorganisms. Although we humans discovered the existence of microorganisms relatively recently, we have been dealing with them for hundreds and thousands of years. We have used some microorganisStaphylococcal enterotoxin A (SEA) is the most common enterotoxin found in outbreaks of staphylococcal food poisoning (SFP). Based on the amount of SEA produced, S. aureus strains were divided into two main groups, high- and low-SEA-producing strains. The differences in the amounts of SEA formed were found to be associated with the levels of expression of the sea gene and the bacteriophage version

Coiled coil cytoskeleton in cell architecture and osmotic stress response in Streptomyces

Coiled coil proteins emerge as important determinants of bacterial cellular organization. Several such proteins display properties characteristic to metazoan intermediate filament (IF) proteins, and are therefore designated bacterial IF-like proteins. The best studied examples of the latter are crescentin in Caulobacter crescentus that determines the curved cell shape, and FilP (filament forming-p

Body descriptions in biohacking and their overlaps and origins : a Swedish case study

This article researches what body descriptions are present within Swedish biohacking, what roots they have, and what overlaps they create between biohacking and other philosophical, political, and scientific discourses. As biohacking has become an increasingly popular subcultural influence incontemporary culture, not least when it comes to individual responsibility for ones health, the aim of the

Studies of molecular mechanisms of telomere maintenance in Naumovozyma castellii

Telomeres are special DNA-protein structures that protect ends of chromosomes from being recognized as double-strand breaks. Telomeres consist of tandemly repeated units of TG-rich DNA and associate with telomere-specific proteins. When a cell replicates its chromosomes, a certain piece of DNA is lost from chromosomal ends due to the ´´ end replication problem´´. This progressive shortening of telo

CMES Seminar: Worlds of Waymaking: Viability, Orientation, and the Recalibration of Syrian Lives

16 april 2026 13:15 till 14:30 | Seminarium Presentation by Andreas Bandak, University of Copenhagen. Joyful crowds toppling statues, unsealing torture prisons, defacing regime iconography, ordinary people roaming freely through Al-Asad’s Presidential Palace . . . images such as these have left us in no doubt that history was being made, and in the most dramatic way: the old order—that had seemed

Beyond Anti-Racism: Etnographies of Antiracism and Conviviality

What after all, are antiracist in favour of ? Gilroy (1998: 53) RESEARCH AIMS AND OBJECTIVESWe have for the last decades seen the emergence of new forms of racist mobilisation and action across European societies framed through radical critique towards multiculturalism and towards migration in general but especially refugees. Such mobilisations have been explained in different ways ranging from se

"Belgium is beginning to pay the Congo bill; she will wish she have never heard of the Congo before she has finished."

Influence of geometry and ventilation boundaries on simulation of the flow outside a room set-up in laboratory environment

In this study, the results from simulations of two sets of a 1/2 scale ISO room (ISO 9705) experiments are presented. In the experiments, heptane in a tray was burned in the middle of the room. Five models with various levels of complexity and geometric detail are used. The comparisons between simulations and experiments show that the fourth model provides the most accurate results with deviation
