Brett samhällsfokus krävs för att förstå hälsoojämlikheter - Hälso- och sjukvården bara ett av många områden som inverkar för att uppnå målet om jämlik hälsa

The understanding of health inequalities requires further development of epidemiological capacity and must have a broad focus on social determinants of health The article by Agardh et al (1) in this issue of Läkartidningen compares the trend of population health in Stockholm county versus the rest of the country. The article represents an important attempt to monitor and understand the driving for

Modal analysis of resonant and non-resonant optical response in semiconductor nanowire arrays

Nanowire array solar cells have reached efficiencies where it becomes feasible to talk about creating tandem solar cells in order to achieve even higher efficiencies. An example of such a tandem solar cell could be a nanowire array embedded in a membrane and integrated on top of a Si bottom cell. Such a system, however, requires understanding and control of its interaction with light, especially t

Deterministic Lateral Displacement for Cell Separation

In the fields of medicine and biology, the separation of particles is a central step in many preparative and analytical processes. Deterministic Lateral Displacement (DLD) has been a promising technique in the field of microfluidic particle and cell sorting, specifically for label-free separation with several applications of sorting by size, morphology, and deformation reported in the literature o

Kinetically limited composition of ternary III-V nanowires

Controlling the composition of ternary III-V semiconductor nanowires is of high technological importance and the current theoretical understanding is so far limited. We derive a model for the kinetically limited composition of metal-particle-seeded, ternary nanowires. The model is based on the diffusion controlled growth rate of supercritical nuclei. Applying this model to gold-seeded and self-see

Three-Dimensional Imaging of Beam-Induced Biasing of InP/GaInP Tunnel Diodes

Electron holographic tomography was used to obtain three-dimensional reconstructions of the morphology and electrostatic potential gradient of axial GaInP/InP nanowire tunnel diodes. Crystal growth was carried out in two opposite directions: GaInP–Zn/InP–S and InP–Sn/GaInP–Zn, using Zn as the p-type dopant in the GaInP but with changes to the n-type dopant (S or Sn) in the InP. Secondary electron

Using Ultrathin Parylene Films as an Organic Gate Insulator in Nanowire Field-Effect Transistors

We report the development of nanowire field-effect transistors featuring an ultrathin parylene film as a polymer gate insulator. The room temperature, gas-phase deposition of parylene is an attractive alternative to oxide insulators prepared at high temperatures using atomic layer deposition. We discuss our custom-built parylene deposition system, which is designed for reliable and controlled depo

Transport and excitations in a negative-U quantum dot at the LaAlO3/SrTiO3 interface

In a solid-state host, attractive electron-electron interactions can lead to the formation of local electron pairs which play an important role in the understanding of prominent phenomena such as high T c superconductivity and the pseudogap phase. Recently, evidence of a paired ground state without superconductivity was demonstrated at the level of single electrons in quantum dots at the interface

Growth of InAs NWs with controlled morphology by CVD

We report on the growth of single crystal InAs NWs on Si/SiOx substrates by chemical vapor deposition (CVD). By adjusting growth parameters, the diameters, morphology, length and the proportion of superlattice ZB InAs NWs (NWs) can be controlled on a Si/SiOx substrate. Our work provides a low-cost route to grow and phase-engineer single crystal InAs NWs for a wide range of potential applications.

Full optoelectronic simulation of nanowire LEDs : Effects of temperature

Nanowires (NWs) have potential to enable new types of light-emitting diodes (LEDs), which also entail challenges for the development of improved full device simulation models. In this work we calculate the extraction efficiency and emission enhancement in NW array LEDs at different temperatures and couple the results to carrier transport simulations. Our results show that the extraction efficiency

Modeling of charge and photon transport in coupled intracavity light emitters

To enable a more detailed analysis of our recent studies of intracavity double diode structures (DDSs), new simulation tools are needed. Such simulation models must account for both charge and photon transport in the studied structures, consisting of optically coupled AlGaAs/GaAs double heterojunction light emitting diode (LED) and GaAs p-n-homojunction photodiode (PD) structure, enclosed within a

Atrial time and voltage dispersion are both needed to predict new-onset atrial fibrillation in ischemic stroke patients

Background: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a known risk factor for ischemic stroke. Electrocardiographic predictors of AF in population studies such as the Framingham Heart Study, as well as in hypertensive patients have demonstrated a predictive value of the P-wave duration for development of AF. QRS vector magnitude has had a predictive value in ventricular arrhythmia development. We aimed to asses

Low expression of hexokinase-2 is associated with false-negative FDG–positron emission tomography in multiple myeloma

18F-Fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG)–positron emission tomography (PET) and diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging with background signal suppression (DWIBS) are 2 powerful functional imaging modalities in the evaluation of malignant plasma cell (PC) disease multiple myeloma (MM). Preliminary observations have suggested that MM patients with extensive disease according to DWIBS may be reported as

Gender differences in subtypes of depression by first incidence and age of onset : a follow-up of the Lundby population

The Lundby Study is a prospective mental health survey in a community population (N = 3563), in which data were collected in 4 waves of field-work between 1947 and 1997. We investigated gender differences during the follow-up in overall first incidence rates, ages of onset, and incidence by age of onset patterns, in different subtypes of depression. The overall incidence rate in females was higher

Coherent Transport in a Linear Triple Quantum Dot Made from a Pure-Phase InAs Nanowire

A highly tunable linear triple quantum dot (TQD) device is realized in a single-crystalline pure-phase InAs nanowire using a local finger gate technique. The electrical measurements show that the charge stability diagram of the TQD can be represented by three kinds of current lines of different slopes and a simulation performed based on a capacitance matrix model confirms the experiment. We show t

Predicting participation in the population-based Swedish cardiopulmonary bio-image study (SCAPIS) using register data

Aims: To illustrate the importance of access to register data on determinants and predictors of study participation to assess validity of population-based studies. In the present investigation, we use data on sociodemographic conditions and disease history among individuals invited to the Swedish cardiopulmonary bio-image study (SCAPIS) in order to establish a model that predicts study participati

Family history of cardiometabolic diseases and its association with arterial stiffness in the Malmö Diet Cancer cohort

OBJECTIVE:: Arterial stiffening increases with age and is associated with increased cardiovascular risk. Several risk factors have been shown to predict the development of arterial stiffening; however, a positive family history (FH+) of cardiometabolic disease (CMD) and hypertension has not been extensively studied. We hypothesize that FH+ of CMD plays a significant role in the development of arte
