Spatio-temporal patterns in vegetation start of season across the island of Ireland using the MERIS Global Vegetation Index

Spring phenophases such as the beginning of leaf unfolding, measured in the Irish gardens of the International Phenological Garden (IPG) network, indicate an earlier spring occurrence hence a longer growing season. However, these measurements are limited to selected species of trees at a few point locations in the southern half of the country. The aim of this study was to develop a methodology, ba

The anomalous hyperfine structure of Al II

The hyperfine structure of a large number of transitions in Al II cannot be described using A and B hyperfine constants and the hyperfine structure is therefore said to be anomalous. In this paper, we have studied the hyperfine structure of a few transitions in Al II, 3s5s(3)S-3s5p(3)P, 3s4d(3)D-3s5p(3)P and 3s5p(3)P-3s5d(3)D, by combining theory and experiment. It is shown that the anomalous hype

Evaluation of image quality and diagnostic accuracy in breast tomosynthesis. Comparison with digital mammography and estimates of radiation risk

Recent advances in the digital detector technology have paved the way for modalities such as two-dimensional digital mammography (DM) and three-dimensional breast tomosynthesis (BT). In this work, experimental studies were conducted to investigate the influence of reducing the average glandular dose (AGD) on detection of simulated lesions in DM and to compare the diagnostic accuracy of BT and DM.

Regional Innovation Measured by Patent Data-Does Quality Matter?

This paper devises a new way of measuring the geographical scope of innovation based on patent data and compares its geographical distribution with that of patents granted and production. Indicators of patent quality are used to form an index of regional innovation, which is argued to be an improvement over patent counts, which are seen as indicators of inventions. Innovations are more concentrate

Feeling double locked-in at work: Implications for health and job satisfaction among municipal employees.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to examine the double locked-in phenomenon at work (i.e., being in a non-preferred occupation and non-preferred work place), and its associations to psychological health, physical health and job satisfaction. METHODS: A total of 136 municipal employees who visited a career coaching center (response rate 59%) participated in the questionnaire study. RESULTS: The

A Paradigm Shift in George Berkeley's Philosophy 1707-1709

In this paper, I argue that there is a paradigm shift in George Berkeley's philosophy between his early unpublished manuscripts (1707-1708) and the Theory of Vision (1709). If so, the traditional method of mixing published and unpublished material will lead to a confused picture of both his early, unpublished view and the doctrine that lie published.

S100B levels are affected by older age but not by alcohol intoxication following mild traumatic brain injury

Introduction: Biomarkers of brain damage and head injury are potentially useful tools in the management of afflicted patients. Particularly S100B has received much attention and has been adapted into clinical guidelines. Alcohol intoxication and higher age (65 years and over) have been used as risk factors for serious complications following head injury. The effect of these factors on S100B levels

The Colonisation History of the Scandinavian Fauna Presented through Subfossil Finds along One of Its Major Immigration Routes; Scania, Southern Sweden

Most of the Swedish subfossil finds of terrestrial mammals have been recovered from Scania. The contributing factors may be that the locally more abundant Late Weichselian sediment basins have been exposed through the extensive practice of peat cutting during the 19th century, and that the public awareness of the significance of the bones and antlers found, prior to the birth of the modern archaeo

Detrusor contraction - Focus on muscarinic receptors

Stimulation of muscarinic receptors is a main mechanism for contractile activation of the detrusor from both animals and humans. Muscarinic receptors are coupled to G-proteins, but the signal transduction systems may vary. In general, M-1 , M-3 and M-5 receptors are considered to couple preferentially to G(q/11) , activating phosphoinositide hydrolysis, in turn leading to mobilization of intracell

Contractile properties of isolated muscle spindles of the frog

Force and isotonic shortening velocities were studied (0.6-4.0 degreesC) in isolated single muscle spindles from the anterior tibialis muscle of Rana temporaria using techniques that enabled measurements both from the spindle as a whole and from marked segments of the preparation. The force-velocity relationship during tetanic stimulation exhibited the same biphasic shape as previously described f

Arbitrary rotation invariant random matrix ensembles and supersymmetry: orthogonal and unitary-symplectic case

Recently, the supersymmetry method was extended from Gaussian ensembles to arbitrary unitarily invariant matrix ensembles by generalizing the Hubbard-Stratonovich transformation. Here, we complete this extension by including arbitrary orthogonally and unitary-symplectically invariant matrix ensembles. The results are equivalent to, but the approach is different from, the superbosonization formula.
