Leukotriene D4 mediates survival and proliferation via separate but parallel pathways in the human intestinal Epithelial cell line Int 407.

We demonstrated previously that leukotriene D-4 (LTD4) regulates proliferation of intestinal epithelial cells through a CysLT receptor by protein kinase C (PKC)epsilon-dependent stimulation of the mitogen-activated protein kinase ERK1/2. Our current study provides the first evidence that LTD4 can activate 90-kDa ribosomal S6 kinase (p90(RSK)) and cAMP-responsive element-binding protein (CREB) via

Ambient Air Contamination by Micron and Submicron Particles from Welding Operations

Impactor sampling and PIXE analysis constitute a good combination in detecting the influence of fugitive emission and ventilation air on ambient air quality. In total filter samples heavier natural particles mask the increase in mass due to the smaller industrial particles. Multielemental analysis of many samples is important in finding unknown sources and in evaluating the effect of all the sourc

Enzymatic and chemical synthesis of phosphatidylcholine regioisomers containing eicosapentaenoic acid or docosahexaenoic acid

Regioselective incorporation of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) into phosphatidylcholine (PC) was carried out using enzymatic and chemical synthesis. Incorporation at the sn-1 position was successfully achieved by lipase-catalysed esterification of 2-palmitoyl-lysophosphatidylcholine (LPC), although in most cases, the enzymes incorporated EPA and DHA at lower rates than

Non-contact surface wave scanning of pavements using a rolling microphone array

We present experiments with a rolling multichannel microphone array where measurements can be taken continuously while moving. Leaky air-coupled surface waves are measured with ordinary non-directional audio microphones. Results show that microphones can be successfully used to produce a realistic phase velocity spectrum even while moving along the surface. The paper presents some theoretical back

Diffusion damping during adiabatic z-rotation pulses for NMR spectroscopy in inhomogeneous magnetic fields

High-resolution nuclear magnetic resonance spectra from samples located in inhomogeneous static and radio frequency magnetic fields can be obtained by applying a train of z-rotation radio frequency pulses to repeatedly refocus the inhomogeneous broadening during signal detection. z-rotation pulses based on an adiabatic double passage are effective over wide bandwidths using a limited amount of rad

Endothelium-mediated relaxation in transplanted aorta

This study compares the vasodilating effect of endothelium-derived relaxing factors (EDRFs) in free arterial grafts with that in their normal control vessels. The infrarenal aorta of Sprague-Dawley rats was transplanted into the same position in other inbred recipient rats. A Krebs buffer solution (4 degrees C) served as the preservation solution. The ischemic time for the grafts (n = 8) was 42 +/

Proteomics - the protein expression technology to study connective tissue biology

During the formation of peribronchial fibrosis in asthma, remodeling of connective tissue is due to an increase in deposition of extracellular matrix components like that of specific types of collagens and proteoglycans. By taking bronchial biopsies, we were able to isolate cell cultures derived from asthmatic patients and healthy volunteers, which provides a good model system to study differences

Contact-free measurements and numerical analyses of the strain distribution in the joint area of steel-to-timber dowel joints

Two different dowel-type joints of differing size were loaded in tension parallel to the grain. The strain distribution in the joint area was studied using a contact-free measurement system. The results were compared with those of numerical analysis. The measurement system was found to be a valuable complement to traditional measurement techniques and also to numerical analyses performed in parame

Model of pleural fluid turnover

A model of pleural fluid turnover, based on mass conservation law, was developed from experimental evidence that 1) pleural fluid filters through the parietal pleura and is drained by parietal lymphatics and 2) lymph flow increases after an increase in pleural liquid volume, attaining a maximum value 10 times greater than control. From the differential equation describing the time evolution of ple

Collagen type II-specific monoclonal antibody-induced arthritis in mice - Description of the disease and the influence of age, sex, and genes

Transfer of collagen type H (CH)-specific monoclonal antibodies induces an acute form of arthritis (collagen type H antibody-induced arthritis, CAIA) in nave mice. Arthritis was induced using a pair of monoclonal antibodies M2139 and CIIC1, binding to J1 and C1(I) epitopes of CH, respectively. Thereafter, lipopolysaccharide injection was used to increase the incidence and severity of the disease.

Coupling of methyl and total mercury in a minerotrophic peat bog in southeastern Sweden

During most of an annual cycle, we studied the temporal variation of total mercury (Hg-T) and methyl mercury (MeHg) in unfiltered and filtered (0.45 mu) peat water from a minerotrophic peat bog in southeastern Sweden. MeHg in bulk water ([MeHgT]) and total Hg in filtered water in discharge water from the peat bog ([Hg-D]) were an order of magnitude higher than in upland runoff water entering the p

Altered swallowing function in elderly patients without dysphagia: radiologic findings in 56 cases

Swallowing disorder is an increasing problem in our aging population. A majority of these patients have a functional abnormality of the oral, pharyngeal, and/or esophageal stage of swallowing. However, what constitutes normalcy is not well understood, and baseline swallowing in elderly persons without dysphagia has not been adequately described. We therefore evaluated 56 persons with a mean age of

Transport asymmetry in peritoneal dialysis: application of a serial heteroporous peritoneal membrane model

The transport of macromolecules during peritoneal dialysis is highly selective when they move from blood to dialysate but nearly completely unselective in the opposite direction. Aiming at describing this asymmetry, we modeled the peritoneal barrier as a series arrangement of two heteroporous membranes. First a three-pore membrane was considered, crossed by small [radius of the small pore (r(s)) a

Does Foreign Direct Investment Replace Home Country Investment? The effect of European Integration on the Location of Swedish Investment

The purpose of this article is to examine the effects of European integration on the location of investments by Swedish multinational corporations (MNCs). Evidence is presented about the extent to which European integration has attracted investment by Swedish MNCs, and whether foreign direct investment (FDI) is being undertaken at the expense of home country investment. In the empirical analysis,

A novel rating scale to predict maximal exercise capacity.

To predict maximal exercise capacity, we have developed the rating of perceived capacity (RPC) scale, based on metabolic equivalents (METs). MET values from 1 to 20 were listed on a progressive scale and linked to physical activities. Test subjects rated their perceived capacity by choosing the most strenuous activity and the corresponding MET value that they could sustain for 30 min. In order to
