High-resolution electron microscopy (HREM) images of silicalite (ZSM-5) along [010] were taken with a 400-kV EM with a resolution of 1.6 Å. The images contain a dark contrast in the centers of the main channels, where there are no atoms. This contrast is an artifact and is not appreciable in the HREM images which have been published so far. That this problem can be overcome by choosing the proper

Studies on the acquisition of French liaison have primarily focused on monolingual children or adult second language (L2) learners in a university context. To bridge the gap between these two populations, the present article focuses on child L2 (cL2) learners – a particularly interesting group, since they are L2 learners who, unlike adults, do not have access to writing. How does liaison develop i

The changes in extracellular Ca2+ (Cae) and K+ (Ke) activities were studied in the rat brain during insulin-induced hypoglycemia. At about the time of onset of isoelectric EEG in severe insulin-induced hypoglycemia (300-g male Wistar rats under 70% N2O anaesthesia), there was an increase in Ke which, at ∼13 mM, was associated with a fall in Cae. Ke peaked at 48 ± 12 mM, and Cae at 0.18 ± 0.28 mM.

The effect of cerebral ischemia on the activity of pyruvate dehydrogenase (PDH) enzyme complex (PDHC) was investigated in homogenates of frozen rat cerebral cortex following 15 min of bilateral common carotid occlusion ischemia and following 15 min, 60 min, and 6 h of recirculation after 15 min of ischemia. In frozen cortical tissue from the same animals, the levels of labile phosphate compounds,

The effect of an α-2 receptor antagonist, idazoxan, on ischemic neuronal damage in the hippocampus and neocortex was studied in rats following 10 min of forebrain ischemia. Idazoxan was given 0.1 mg/kg i.v. immediately after recirculation, followed by 48 h of continuous infusion at a rate of 10 μg/kg/min. A histopathological examination of the CA1 region of the dorsal hippocampus and neocortex fro

Changes in the levels of arachidonic acid during ischemia in selectively vulnerable areas of the hippocampus were studied in the rat brain. Since neurons in the CA1 region are more vulnerable to ischemia than neurons in the adjacent CA3 region, the release of arachidonic acid in these two regions was measured during decapitation ischemia of 4- to 12-min duration. The concentration of free arachido

This study addresses the question of whether the cyclooxygenase inhibitors indomethacin and diclofenac and the glucocorticosteroid dexamethasone ameliorate neuronal necrosis following cerebral ischemia. In addition, since these drugs inhibit the production of prostaglandins and depress phospholipase A2 activity, respectively, the importance of free fatty acids (FFAs) on the development of ischemic

Pepsin‐catalyzed synthesis of protected peptides was studied in two‐phase systems containing up to 50% (by volume) of aqueous phase. A methodological study was carried out to determine the optimum conditions for the synthesis of the model protected peptide Z‐Phe‐Phe‐OMe. Several parameters such as concentrations of carboxylic and amino components, pH of the aqueous phase, ratio of organic to aqueo

This article uses case studies to address the sources of social innovation, a major contributor to economic growth and welfare services. Following the findings of user-innovation research in the commercial sector, the authors found that social-problem users innovate new social services for solving specific social problems. They also found that superior problem and solution knowledge is one reason

We present a novel analysis of time-resolved extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectra based on the fitting of the experimental transients obtained from optical pump/x-ray probe experiments. We apply it to the analysis of picosecond EXAFS data on aqueous [FeII (bpy)3] 2+, which undergoes a light induced conversion from its low-spin (LS) ground state to the short-lived (τ≈650 ps) exc

We analyze the role of migrants in productivity growth in the three largest European countries—France, Germany and the United Kingdom—in the years 1994–2007, using Total Factor Productivity. Unlike previous research, which mainly employs a regional approach, our analysis is at the sectoral level: this allows to distinguish the real contribution of migrants to productivity from possible inter-secto

Counterion 23Na spin relaxation data are reported from the microemulsion phase in the AOT/water/isooctane system as a function of the water/AOT ratio, which determines the size of the aqueous droplets. The 23Na NMR measurements comprise three independent relaxation rates, allowing the individual spectral density values to be determined, as well as the second-order quadrupolar dynamic shift. The ef

We provide an analysis of a randomly grown 2-d network which models the morphological growth of dendritic and axonal arbors. From the stochastic geometry of this model we derive a dynamic graph of potential synaptic connections. We estimate standard network parameters such as degree distribution, average shortest path length and clustering coefficient, considering all these parameters as functions

In Landau theory of Fermi liquids, the particle-hole interaction near the Fermi energy in different spin-isospin channels is probed in terms of an expansion over the Legendre polynomials. This provides a useful and efficient way to constrain properties of nuclear energy density functionals in symmetric nuclear matter and finite nuclei. In this study, we present general expressions for Landau param

I use Swedish establishment-level panel data to test the hypothesis of Bertola and Rogerson (Eur Econ Rev 41:1147-1171 1997) of a positive relation between the degree of wage compression and job reallocation. Results indicate that the effect of wage compression on job turnover is positive and significant in the manufacturing sector. The wage compression effect is stronger on job destruction than o
