The allowed travel distance has probably not been determined scientifically. Yet it indirectly takes a number of factors into account and should therefore not only be seen as a distance that takes a certain time to walk, but also as a certain level of safety. Longer travel distances do extend the walking time but it also makes it possible for a series of factors to increase the risk. The factors t

The purpose of this study is to generate a deeper understanding of the influence of social environments on individuals’ responsible consumption behavior. Based on between-group and within-group comparisons of data obtained from an online survey, we conducted one-way and factorial ANOVA tests. This study contributes to a better understanding of the variability in responsible consumption behaviors.

In 2008 the National Library of Sweden made a decision to change the Swedish classification system SAB to the internationally used Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC), a decision that was supported by the Swedish Library Association that recommended all Swedish libraries to make the change. The main reasons and arguments were internationalisation and rationalisation; less time should be laid on cla

This thesis engages with Western European funding for queer movements in Georgia by asking how these donors affect the local movements, transnational politics and the power dynamics in Georgia. It pursues these inquiries by analysing the Western European understanding of queer activism and how donors support queer movements in Georgia; and the Georgian activists perceptions and suggestions for imp

This thesis discusses the provisions of the Rotterdam Rules on electronic transport records. Among the issues addressed are the current law on bills of lading and attempts at establishing systems issuing electronic bills of lading. The theses then goes on to discuss and analyse the provisions on electronic transport records in detail, their history and objective, along with related provisions on t

This thesis explores how time is represented in movies. It focuses on the challenges and possibilities that faces both the filmmakers and the audience in creating and interpreting a timeline. The investigation begins with a study of narrative tools used in movies that are characterised by a traditional, linear timeline where events are linked by cause and effect and continues with an investigation

The work presented in this thesis addresses the investigation of the electronic, magnetic, and structural properties of late transition metal complexes supported on various surfaces. The research is aimed at studying the interaction between the molecules and the support, together with the intermolecular interaction. This knowledge is essential e.g. for the development of organic molecule-based dev

This study delineates the permissible scope for compulsory mental health interventions under the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD). It was initially triggered by two competing positions within the current debate over the future of coercive psychiatry; a practice that is still omnipresent among states worldwide. According to one position, defended by the CRPD Committee am

AbstractUntil very recently, Germany belonged to the ‘familialist’ group of welfare states, which offered cash rather than services to married couples and families. Sweden, in contrast, belonged to the ‘non-familialist’ counterpart, fostering gender equality in employment and family care via public services and extended reconciliation measures for decades. During the 2000s, however, Germany eventu

We investigate the potential of different pre-fetching and/or caching strategies for different user behaviour with respect to surfing or browsing in a catch-up-TV network. To this end we identify accounts and channels associated with strong or weak surfing or browsing respectively and study the distributions of hold times for the different types of behaviour. Finally we present results from a requ

Decomposition of soil organic matter (SOM) contributes significantly to the global carbon (C) cycle and climate feedbacks. SOM decomposition depends on soil microbial activities, and these activities are driven by the availability of C and other nutrients. Plant root exudates are known to alter decomposition of SOM, a phenomenon referred to as rhizosphere priming effects (RPE). Alternative fuels for combustion engines are becoming increasingly popular as society is pushing to phase out fossil energy to reduce CO2 emissions. The compression ignition (CI) engine has a high overall efficiency which makes it a valuable option for the transport fleet, despite the well known NOx and soot pollutants it emits. These two pollutants are emitted due to a combination of high local c

06-methylated guanine dinucleotides were used to study the influence of hydrogen bonding on the specific binding of the antitumor drug cDDP, cis-PtCl2(NH3)2, to DNA. In this interaction, the guanine-06 site appears to be important in explaining the preference for a pGpG-N7(1),N7(2) chelate, which results from H-bridge formation with the ammine ligand of cDDP.Guanine-06 methylated dinucleotides and

Unlike what is usually taken for granted in semiotics, communication, in the sense of semiosis, does not essentially depend on transport and/or recoding. Instead, it consists in the creation of an artefact, with the additional setting of a task of interpretation. This task may be set by the addressee, just as likely as by the addresser. In making this suggestion, we are inspired by Husserlean phenUnlike what is usually taken for granted in semiotics, communication, in the sense of semiosis, does not essentially depend on transport and/or recoding. Catalysis is one of the few scientific concepts that has entered common parlance. To laymen catalysts simply speed up processes, but to a chemist they are much more interesting and complex. Catalysis offers the possibility to accomplish chemical reactions in a targeted manner with the least expenditure of energy and material. Given the increasing scarcity of resources, catalysts have become relevaThis thesis deals with the design and synthesis of rhodium and iridium bis-η2 diolefin catalysts and their applications in C–C bond formation and asymmetric catalysis.More specifically, the second chapter describes the development of inter- and intramolecular (5+2) cycloadditions catalyzed by cationic iridium(I) complexes that lead to the formation of seven-membered rings in a single step. DFT was
