Beyond Neoliberalized Research : From Auditing to reflexive Governance

For many years, universities represented the ultimate outpost for professional autonomy in Western democracies. Despite little insight into the professional practices of scholars or administrators, governments provided the academic profession with extensive discretion, including the freedom to regulate qualifications for positions, terms for promotion, quality standards, goals, performance indicat

Episodic memory formation in unrestricted viewing

The brain systems of episodic memory and oculomotor control are tightly linked, suggesting a crucial role of eye movements in memory. But little is known about the neural mechanisms of memory formation across eye movements in unrestricted viewing behavior. Here, we leverage simultaneous eye tracking and EEG recording to examine episodic memory formation in free viewing. Participants memorized mult

Computational exploration of FOXM1 inhibitors for glioblastoma : an integrated virtual screening and molecular dynamics simulation study

In this study, a comprehensive investigation of a set of phytochemicals to identify potential inhibitors for the Forkhead box protein M1 (FOXM1) was conducted. FOXM1 is overexpressed in glioblastoma (GBM) cells and plays a crucial role in cell cycle progression, proliferation, and invasion. FOXM1 inhibitors have shown promising results in preclinical studies, and ongoing clinical trials are assess

Unequal poverty and equal industrialisation: Finnish wealth, 1750–1900

We present the first comprehensive, long-run estimates of Finnish wealth and its distribution from 1750 to 1900. Using wealth data from 17,279 probate inventories, we show that Finland was very unequal between 1750 and 1850; the top decile owned about 90% of total wealth. This means that Finland was more unequal than the much wealthier economies Britain, France and the US, which goes against the c

Macro-pulse generation in a storage-ring free-electron laser : A single-particle plus FEL numerical approach

In a storage-ring free-electron laser (FEL), the onset and growth of intra-cavity power at the resonator wavelength can be naturally accompanied by coherent emission at higher harmonics. Contrary to what happens in singlepass linac-based devices, the electron beam is re-circulated in the storage ring and, while the microbunching becomes "thermalized" from turn to turn, the evolution of other bunch

Correlation between membrane surface properties, polymer nature and fouling in skim milk ultrafiltration

The fouling of the membranes in skim milk ultrafiltration with the nominal molecular weight cut-off (MWCO) of 100 kDa fabricated from different polymers (polysulfone (PSF), polysulfonamide (PSA), aromatic polyamide (PA), polyacrylonitrile (PAN), cellulose acetate (CA) and regenerated cellulose (RC)) was studied. The membrane structure and physical-chemical properties of the selective layer were an

Making more of middles: advancing the middle-out perspective in energy system transformation

Social and technological innovations are commonly seen as either being induced from the ‘top-down’ – e.g., by policymakers – or evolving from the ‘bottom-up’ – e.g., by consumers. Instead, a ‘middle-out’ perspective (MOP) focuses on agents of change that are located in the middle, between the top and the bottom. Janda and Parag (2013) and Parag & Janda (2014) describe how middle actors include

Review of IS security policy compliance : Toward the building blocks of an IS asecurity theory

An understanding of insider threats in information systems (IS) is important to help address one of the dangers lurking within organizations. This article provides a review of the literature on insider compliance (and failure of compliance) with information systems' policies in order to understand the status of IS research regarding negligent and malicious insiders. We begin by defining the terms,

Core tenets of the theory of ecologically unequal exchange

In this article, core tenets and claims of the theory of ecologically unequal exchange (EUE) are synthesized. EUE theory postulates a net flow of natural resources from peripheral developing to core industrialized countries through international trade, a situation which undermines the development of the periphery while enhancing that of the core. The key claims and EUE mechanisms are categorized a

Reverse Flooding: exploiting radio interference for efficient propagation delay compensation in WSN clock synchronization

Clock synchronization is a necessary component in modern distributed systems, especially WSN. Despite the great effort and the numerous improvements, the existing synchronization schemes do not yet address the cancellation of propagation delays. Up to a few years ago, this was not perceived as a problem, because the time-stamping precision was a more limiting factor for the accuracy achievable wit

Viscoelastic haemostatic assays and fibrinogen concentration tests during haemodilution: The effects of fibrinogen and factor XIII

Background: The efficacy of concentrates of fibrinogen and factor XIII in hypothermia and haemodilution has not yet been completely investigated. Clauss methods have not previously been evaluated perioperatively. Methods: Coagulation was assessed with rotational thromboelastometry (ROTEM) or free oscillation rheometry (FOR) in vitro and different fibrinogen measurement methods in observational stu

Conduction properties of accessory atrioventricular pathways: Importance of the accessory pathway location and normal atrioventricular conduction

Objective-The objective of this study was to determine the conduction properties of the normal atrioventricular (AV) conduction system in relation to accessory pathway (AP) location in patients with symptomatic Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome. Design-The conduction properties of the AP and the AV node were studied in 356 patients with single manifest AP who underwent successful ablation. Results-Si

Assessments of well-being in caring of patients undergoing surgery for gastrointestinal cancer. Studies of nutrition, activities of daily living and health related quality of life

Enligt journaldokumentation hos 45 patienter som opererades 1985-89, för cancer i bukspottkörteln, hade patienterna ett försämrat nThe aim was to study some aspects of patients´ well-being, related to nutrition, activities of daily living and health related quality of life, when undergoing major gastrointestinal cancer surgery. Chart documentations (N=45) of patients undergoing subtotal pancreatectomy were studied, and showed the patients' well-being to be affected, although it was not possible to fully evaluate the results o

Skatteverkets princip för hur en bruttolön ska beräknas, nettolön = bruttolön – tabellskatteavdrag, har där-med varit vägledande för uOn the 2nd of November 2006 the Swedish Tax Agency published a standpoint document with the purpose to clarify how a gross salary was supposed to be calculated based on a net salary contract. Since the publishing of the document, Swedish case law has developed in accordance with the principles laid out in the document. The principle set out by the Swedish Tax Agency, Net salary = gross salary – ta

Submesoscale variations in sea surface temperature and salinity - a comparison between satellite data and in situ measurements from a mobile platform

Sea surface temperature and salinity are important variables for understanding many ocean and climate processes. They can be measured both by in situ sensors and satellite remote sensing, each method with its own advantages and disadvantages. Satellite data provides unmatched spatial and temporal coverage on a global scale, but is limited by its spatial resolution which cannot always resolve varia

Investigating cytoprotective roles of intracellular C3 in cytokine induced death of pancreatic cells in Type 2 Diabetes

A spoon full of insulin helps blood sugar go down Glucose is the primary source of fuel our bodies extract from carbohydrates to power our cells. Once glucose is released into the blood stream, pancreas reacts by releasing insulin into the blood stream. Insulin is a hormone which allows cells to uptake glucose after a meal. However, when insulin is not produced by the pancreas, or the cells don’

Reclaiming constructive alignment

Constructive Alignment (CA) is neither the panacea, nor the unalloyed evil depicted in the majority of higher education discourses. But rather, the theory is a heuristic and accessible representation of commonly agreed upon aspects of modern curriculum and educational theory, designed explicitly to support learning and teaching. However, when imposed top-down for accountability purposes, or used a
