GBA and APOE ε4 associate with sporadic dementia with Lewy bodies in European genome wide association study

Dementia with Lewy Bodies (DLB) is a common neurodegenerative disorder with poor prognosis and mainly unknown pathophysiology. Heritability estimates exceed 30% but few genetic risk variants have been identified. Here we investigated common genetic variants associated with DLB in a large European multisite sample. We performed a genome wide association study in Norwegian and European cohorts of 7

Assessment of quality of care provided to adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus at public hospitals in Gamo Gofa zone, Southern Ethiopia : Facility based Cross-Sectional study

PURPOSE: Proactive management of type 2 diabetes is important for restoring beta-cell function and improving sustained blood glucose control. Evidence on quality of diabetes care in Ethiopia is inadequate.METHOD: Facility-based cross-sectional study was conducted to assess level of quality of care provided to adult type 2 diabetes patients at three public hospitals in Gamo Gofa Zone, Southern Ethi

The Gaia -ESO Survey : The analysis of the hot-star spectra

Context. The Gaia-ESO Survey (GES) is a large public spectroscopic survey that has collected, over a period of six years, spectra of ~105 stars. This survey provides not only the reduced spectra, but also the stellar parameters and abundances resulting from the analysis of the spectra. Aims. The GES dataflow is organised in 19 working groups. Working group 13 (WG13) is responsible for the spectral

Welfare justifications and responsibility in political decision making - The case of Nudging*

Nudging, i.e. the framing of decision environments to exploit known behavioral biases in order to induce certain outcomes, has received considerable attention as a potential policy tool in recent years. Motivated as preserving freedom of choice while making people better off according to their own judgment, nudging seemingly comes at fairly little responsibility for the nudger, i.e. policy makers,

Thermostable Phytase from a Bacillus sp.: Heterologous Production, Mutation, Characterization and Assay Development

Phytase is an important enzyme in the food/feed industry. It catalyzes the hydrolysis of phytate, an anti-nutrient compound present in cereals and grains, to release orthophosphate and myo-inositol-6-phosphate with lower degrees of phosphorylation. Phytic acid is a strong chelator capable of complexing with a variety of metal ions under neutral and alkaline conditions, as well as with proteins and

Fluorescence quenching in Zn2+-bis-terpyridine coordination polymers: a single molecule study

A Zn2+-bis-terpyridine coordination polymer is investigated by single-molecule fluorescence spectroscopy (SMS). The bis-terpyridine ligands of the coordination polymers bear conjugated chromophores connecting the terpyridine spheres of the ligands, which resemble structural features of MEH-PPV. To the best of our knowledge this paper presents the first systematic SMS study on Zn2+-bis-terpyridine

Optimization of moderators and beam extraction at the ESS

A global approach coupling the moderator to the beam extraction system has been applied for the design optimization of the thermal and cold moderators of the European Spallation Source (ESS), which will be the brightest neutron source in the world for condensed-matter studies. The design is based on the recently developed high-brightness low-dimensional moderator concepts. Para-hydrogen is used fo

Natural variation in yolk fatty acids, but not androgens, predicts offspring fitness in a wild bird

Background: In egg-laying animals, mothers can influence the developmental environment and thus the phenotype of their offspring by secreting various substances into the egg yolk. In birds, recent studies have demonstrated that different yolk substances can interactively affect offspring phenotype, but the implications of such effects for offspring fitness and phenotype in natural populations have

Joint Analog Beam Selection and Digital Beamforming in Millimeter Wave Cell-Free Massive MIMO Systems

Cell-free massive MIMO systems consist of many distributed access points with simple components that jointly serve the users. In millimeter wave bands, only a limited set of predetermined beams can be supported. In a network that consolidates these technologies, downlink analog beam selection stands as a challenging task for the network sum-rate maximization. Low-cost digital filters can improve t

In situ assembly of bioresorbable organic bioelectronics in the brain

Bioelectronics can potentially complement classical therapies in nonchronic treatments, such as immunotherapy and cancer. In addition to functionality, minimally invasive implantation methods and bioresorbable materials are central to nonchronic treatments. The latter avoids the need for surgical removal after disease relief. Self-organizing substrate-free organic electrodes meet these criteria an

Molecular and functional characterization of lung cancer initiating cells

Lung cancer is one of the most aggressive diseases in the whole world, claiming millions of people each year. Nobody has yet found a successful cure for it and, therefore, there is an urgent need for more research to discover how patients could be saved. Lung cancer is so hard to diagnose since it grows quietly and it’s often detected when it has spread to other organs, meaning that it has invaded

NABO

Vi In our individualized society, with a shift from strict norms on how we live our lives to everyone’s own unique lifestyle, we see a growing need for diversified housing for different types of constellations. The nuclear family is not a certainty anymore, the number of single residencies have increased and separations are common. People can choose to become a parent on their own and twosome relatio

Tracking the eye of the beholder: The roles of effort and preferences in everyday decision making

This study investigates the relation between preferences and cognitive effort in decision making tasks in a natural setting. Does the way a supermarket’s shelves are organized affect how easy it is to choose what items to purchase? Does it affect the quality of our choice? The eye-movements of participants were recorded during their regular shopping trips in two supermarkets with different shelf

Towards quantitative imaging using coded light

Spectral imaging allows for the simultaneous visualization of multiple different spectral bands of a scene, and is a powerful tool used in a range of contexts - from the color cameras in smart phones, to scientific imaging applications such as remote sensing and fluorescence microscopy. The progress within these fields of research is therefore intrinsically linked to the advances made for more eff

Parameters Affecting Automation

Background & Problem: The increased global competition has forced companies to perform project faster and better and minimising resource utilisation. This emphasis on efficiency is recognised by Tetra Pak Processing systems. Projects are complicated temporary endeavours, by exploring the efficiency decreasing parameters knowledge about how to increase efficiency can be gained. Purpose: The pur

Comparison of immunohistochemical and biochemical assay of steroid receptors in primary breast cancer - Clinical associations and reasons for discrepancies

Estrogen ( ER) and progesterone receptor (PgR) status was analysed in paraffin-embedded breast cancer material with immunohistochemical (IHC) technique and compared with corresponding analyses in cytosols ( CYT). ER showed the same status (positive/negative) with both methods in 88% of the samples (352/ 402). The concordance was also high for PgR status (81% [321/394]). Besides values near cut-off
