Effect of alpha-ketoglutarate given to pregnant sows on the development of the humerus and femur in newborns
Alpha-ketoglutarate (AKG) was given to pregnant sows every day starting from the 91(st) d of pregnancy to farrowing. At the same time control pregnant sows were treated in the same way with physiological saline (PhS). Newborn piglets from the experimental (AKG) and control (PhS) mothers were euthanised in 1 h after their birth, and the femora and humeri were isolated and frozen at -25 degrees C un
Housing-related control beliefs and independence in activities of daily living in very old age
Control beliefs, i.e. a person's perceived control over his or her own behaviour, are important predictors of psychological functioning in old age. The aim of this study is to examine the mediating effect of housing-related control beliefs on the relationship between housing accessibility and independence in activities of daily living (ADL). Moreover, cross-national differences in five European co
Molecular Characterization of the Interaction between Porins of Neisseria gonorrhoeae and C4b-Binding Protein.
Neisseria gonorrhoeae, the causative agent of gonorrhea, is a natural infection only in humans. The resistance of N. gonorrhoeae to normal human serum killing correlates with porin (Por)-mediated binding to the complement inhibitors C4b-binding protein (CUP). The entire binding site for both porin molecules resides within complement control protein domain 1 (CCPI) of C4BP. Only human and chimpanze
Lack of an association between Helicobacter infection and autoimmune hepatitis in children
An association between Helicobacter infection and autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) in children was investigated. The prevalence of antibodies to H. pylori did not differ between the AIH and the control group, (22% versus 14%), and antibodies to non-gastric Helicobacter were not detected in either group. H. pylori DNA was found in two AIH liver tissues, but Helicobacter was not cultured from any sample.
MyD88 Signaling Regulates Steady-State Migration of Intestinal CD103+ Dendritic Cells Independently of TNF-α and the Gut Microbiota.
Intestinal homeostasis and induction of systemic tolerance to fed Ags (i.e., oral tolerance) rely on the steady-state migration of small intestinal lamina propria dendritic cells (DCs) into draining mesenteric lymph nodes (MLN). The majority of these migratory DCs express the α integrin chain CD103, and in this study we demonstrate that the steady-state mobilization of CD103(+) DCs into the MLN is
INITIAL INSIGHTS INTO THE STRUCTURE-ACTIVITY RELATIONSHIPS OF AVIAN DEFENSINS.
Numerous β-defensins have been identified in birds and the potential use of these peptides as alternatives to antibiotics has been proposed, in particular to fight antibiotic-resistant and zoonotic bacterial species. Little is known about the mechanism of antibacterial activity of avian β-defensins (AvBDs), and the present work was carried out to obtain initial insights into the involvement of str
Acute Kidney Injury Assessed by Cystatin C after Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation and Late Renal Dysfunction.
The aim of the present study was to evaluate acute kidney injury (AKI) with cystatin C following transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) and to assess the impact of postoperative AKI on outcome and late renal function.
Elderly People's Perceptions of a Telehealthcare System: Relative Advantage, Compatibility, Complexity and Observability
The use of telehealthcare systems to promote independent living for elderly people is growing. The results presented in this article, derived from an initial user lab test of a telecare system—GiraffPlus—indicate that the crucial factor for adoption of telehealthcare systems is not usability but the system's ability to support autonomy in everyday life. Eleven users tested the usability and report
Membrane protein identification: N-terminal labeling of nontryptic membrane protein peptides facilitates database searching
Membrane proteins are fairly refractory to digestion especially by trypsin, and less specific proteases, such as elastase and pepsin, are much more effective. However, database searching using nontryptic peptides is much less effective because of the lack of charge localization at the N and C termini and the absence of sequence specificity. We describe a method for N-terminal-specific labeling of
Statistical assessment of changes in ADL dependence: three-graded versus dichotomised scaling.
N-acetylcysteine administration during the first week of life does not improve lung function in extremely low birth weight infants
Oxygen toxicity is thought to be an important factor involved in development of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) in the very preterm infant. Glutathione (GSH) plays a major role in the antioxidant defense system in the preterm lung and there are theoretical implications that N-acetylcysteine (NAC) treatment could improve its function. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether NAC treatm

Transfer of (137)Cs from Chernobyl debris and nuclear weapons fallout to different Swedish population groups.
Data from measurements on the body burden Of (CS)-C-134, Cs-137 and K-40 in various Swedish populations between 1959 and 2001 has been compiled into a national database. The compilation is a co-operation between the Departments of Radiation Physics in Malmo and Goteborg, the National Radiation Protection Authority (SSI) and the Swedish Defense Research Agency (FOI). In a previous study the effecti
Hepatitis C virus genotypes in different regions of the former Soviet Union (Russia, Belarus, Moldova, and Uzbekistan)
The prevalence of HCV genotypes in four republics of the former Soviet Union (Russia, Belarus, Moldova, and Uzbekistan) was investigated. Overall, 197 HCV isolates from 66 blood donors and 131 patients with chronic hepatitis were typed. Viral sequences from sera of infected subjects were amplified by nested RT-PCR using primers from the core region and typed by one or two techniques: (1) DNA enzym
A structured questionnaire to assess patient compliance and beliefs about medicines taking into account the ordered categorical structure of data
Rationale, aims and objective The objectives were to describe and evaluate the structured medication questionnaire and to improve data handling of results from the Morisky four-item scale for patient compliance and Beliefs about Medicines Questionnaire-specific (BMQ-specific). Methods A questionnaire was developed with the purpose of being used when identifying medication errors and assessing pati
Ionic binding of C3 to the human pathogen Moraxella catarrhalis is a unique mechanism for combating innate immunity
Moraxella catarrhalis ubiquitous surface proteins A1 and A2 (UspA1/A2) interfere with the classical pathway of the complement system by binding C4b-binding protein. In this study we demonstrate that M. catarrhalis UspA1 and A2 noncovalently and in a dose-dependent manner bind both the third component of complement (C3) from EDTA-treated serum and methylamine-treated C3. In contrast, related Moraxe
Tooth wear in wild boar (Sus scrofa).
In order to study the limitations and possibilities of age estimation based on tooth wear of skeletal remains from wild boar, 315 mandibles from five different populations of wild boar from Poland, Germany and Sweden were analysed. Asymmetric tooth wear between the right and left mandibles was found to be rare and no systematic difference in tooth wear between males and females (less than 36 month
Eye Movements During Mental Imagery are Not Reenactments of Perception
In this study eye movements were recorded for participants in three different conditions. All three conditions consisted of a perception phase and an imagery phase. The imagery phase was similar for all conditions, i.e. participants looked freely at a blank white screen. But the perception phase was different for each condition. In a control condition participants looked freely at a complex pictur
