Many countries in the Western world are facing great challenges posed by an ageing population. Since cognitive impairments and the prevalence of dementia increases with age, we can expect an increasing number of older people in need of care. However, severe problems with such care are already reported by researchers as well as in the mass media. The aim of this paper is to discuss how the identity

Dactylorhiza traunsteineri is an allotetraploid species that belongs to the large Dactylorhiza incarnata/maculata polyploid complex of the Eurasian genus Dactylorhiza (Orchidaceae). Here, eight polymorphic microsatellite loci were isolated using selective hybridization according to the FIASCO protocol (fast isolation by AFLP of sequences containing repeats) with slight modifications. The number of

The structures of three closely related heterodimetallic cyano complexes, [(NC)(5)Pt-Tl(CN)(n)](n-) (n = 1-3), formed in reactions between [Pt-II(CN)(4)](2-) and Tl-III cyano complexes, have been studied in aqueous solution. Multinuclear NMR data ((TI)-T-205, Pt-195, and C-13) were used for identification and quantitative analysis. X-ray absorption spectra were recorded at the Pt and TlLIII edges.

Vid för höga halter av partiklar i BACKGROUND: Exposure to airborne particles in occupational environments can lead to both acute and long-term health effects in humans. To date, particle exposure limits in the air are typically given in terms of mass concentrations. But by only using mass concentration to characterize particles means there is a risk that other relevant characteristics, such as particle size and composition are con

Heat transfer in gas turbine related applications is investigated by steady state liquid crystal thermography (LCT) in this thesis. The work presented includes outlet guide vane heat transfer and gas turbine internal cooling. The heat transfer on the outlet guide vane (OGV) surface and its endwall region is investigated experimentally in a linear cascade test facility. The inlet flow angle is varie

Recently a new approach to photoemission, EXAFS and electron scattering has been developed. The correlations between target electrons are separated from the active electron-target electron correlations, and the damping effects are coming out explicitly. The theory uses van Hove diagonal Green's functions and projection operator techniques, not the usual diagram expansions. By omitting from the sta

A semiempirical method to characterize the pencil-beam dose kernel is presented. Results from measurements are described by mathematical models of the applicable physical processes. The measurements were made with 6 and 25 MV x-ray beams from a linear accelerator. Broad-beam notations were used consistently, and the pencil-beam quantities were obtained by differentiation. The results were compared

A random planar quadrangulation process is introduced as an approximation for certain cellular automata in terms of random growth of lines, called rays, from a given set of points. This model turns out to be a particular (rectangular) case of the well-known Gilbert tessellation, which originally models the growth of needle-shaped crystals from the initial random points with a Poisson distribution
