Sustainability moving forward with grants, innovations and a top ranking

I and many others are ambivalent when it comes to the ranking of the world’s universities. But Lund University has made the ranking lists and that does have an impact, at the very least for international marketing purposes. We must be active, rather than passive, in relation to the ranking bodies. Small margins can make a university climb or tumble down the lists, so there is a need to be modest w

How does the sharing economy develop in cities – and what are the benefits and threats?

This article is over 5 years old, and the information may therefore be outdated. The environmental, social and economic benefits of the sharing economy have become a contested issue. When municipalities and sharing organisations argue how the concept should develop, they often use sustainability claims to back up their standpoints. In her thesis, Lucie Enochsson explains how sharing organisations

The brain's immune cells can be triggered to slow down Alzheimer's disease

The brain's big-eating immune cells can slow down the progression of Alzheimer's disease. This is shown by a study that is now published in Nature Aging. The brain's own immune cells are called microglia and are found in the central nervous system. They are big eaters that kill viruses, damaged cells and infectious agents they come across. It has long been known that microglial cells can be activa

Cutting out sugar and starch is as effective for IBS as current recommendations

Symptoms for patients with the gastrointestinal disease IBS improved as much by eating less sugar and starch as for those who followed FODMAP – the diet currently recommended to patients. The results, presented in a new study from Lund University in Sweden, also show that weight loss is greater and sugar cravings are reduced among those who follow the starch and sucrose-reduced diet. Multiple explanations for memory problems

This article is over 5 years old, and the information may therefore be outdated. Where did I put my sunglasses? Where have the car keys got to, what is the door code to Lisa’s building, and what did I do yesterday afternoon? We all know how irritating it can be when our memory doesn’t work as it should. However, it can be difficult to know what is a ‘normal’ poor memory and what is the result of d

Ease or Excitement?

There is no doubt that retailing is undergoing a significant structural transformation. During the last decade or so, many stores have closed. Yet, at the same time, online retailers are opening physical stores and showrooms and many long-established retailers are investing in new and innovative store formats. This suggests that the physical store is not ‘dead’ but that its role and function is ch

Between 2015 and 2020 it became significantly harder to be granted sick insurance in Sweden. Altermark and Plesner examine the lived experiences for chronically ill people of losing financial support. They show that consequences often are drastic, as people experience economic crisis. This in turn gives rise to stress and uncertainty with regards to the future that often contributes to deteriorati
