How to Improve Student Performance? A look inside the box of teachers' education

Improving the quality of education is imperative for economic development, and educating teachers has been seen as one of the main ways to increase educational quality. Yet, there is conflicting evidence about the importance or effectiveness of teacher’s education to improve student outcomes. This text makes use of the TALIS-PISA link from the OECD to disaggregate teachers’ education into the diff

High-resolution simulations of stellar collisions between equal-mass main-sequence stars in globular clusters

We performed high-resolution simulations of two stellar collisions relevant for stars in globular clusters. We considered one head-on collision and one off-axis collision between two 0.6-Msolar main-sequence stars. We show that a resolution of about 100000 particles is sufficient for most studies of the structure and evolution of blue stragglers. We demonstrate conclusively that collision products

Are Individualist Accounts of Collective Responsibility Morally Deficient?

Individualists hold that moral responsibility can be ascribed to single human beings only. An important collectivist objection is that individualism is morally deficient because it leaves a normative residue. Without attributing responsibility to collectives there remains a “deficit in the accounting books” (Pettit). This collectivist strategy often uses judgment aggregation paradoxes to show that

Can Persistence be a Matter of Convention?

This paper asks whether persistence can be a matter of convention. It argues that in a rather unexciting de dicto sense persistence is indeed a matter of convention, but it rejects the notion that persistence can be a matter of convention in a more substantial de re sense. However, scenarios can be imagined that appear to involve conventional persistence of the latter kind. Since there are strong

Evaluability : an alternative approach to polarity sensitivity

Based on Brandtler (2012), this paper argues that polarity items are sensitive to evaluability, a concept that refers to the possibility of accepting or rejecting an utterance as true in a communicative exchange. The main distinction is made between evaluable and non-evaluable utterances. The evaluable category comprises any clause that asserts, presupposes or entails the truth of an affirmative o

Justin and Stoic Cosmo-Theology

Abstract in UndeterminedDue to his background as a Platonist, Justin Martyr’s relation to Stoic philosophy has not gained as much attention from scholars as his relation to Platonism, and his relationship to contemporary Stoicism has been largely overlooked. The present essay provides an overview and analysis of Justin’s references and allusions to Stoics and Stoic philosophy, with particular focu

Operation for nitritation of sludge liquor in a full-scale SBR.

At Sjölunda WWTP, a full-scale SBR for treatment of mesophilic sludge digester liquor has been operated almost a year with stable nitrite accumulation. Only nitritation of the sludge liquor is needed since the oxidized ammonium is denitrified in the first anoxic zone of the high-loaded activated sludge in the main plant. The process strategy was to have an ammonium set-point to end the aeration, a

Strategies to improve clinical research in surgery through international collaboration

More than 235 million patients undergo surgery every year worldwide, but less than 1% are enrolled in surgical clinical trials-few of which are international collaborations. Several levels of action are needed to improve this situation. International research collaborations in surgery between developed and developing countries could encourage capacity building and quality improvement, and mutually
