Dynamic Optimization of Transportation Networks with Delays

The topic of this thesis is the optimal control of transportation networks. The problem studied is a dynamical extension of a classical problem in economics, in which the objective is to distribute goods to maximize welfare, whilst satisfying constraints on production and consumption. The main contribution is to show that for a class of welfare functions and dynamics, the optimal control is highly

The ethics of regenerative medicine

Most developments in regenerative medicine have in common that there are many uncertainties and knowledge gaps. These features make the evaluation of long-term consequences of the available options difficult and have consequences for the ethical issues raised. This paper presents an overview of ethical issues raised in regenerative medicine, using as a starting point a list of stakeholders and theMost developments in regenerative medicine have in common that there are many uncertainties and knowledge gaps. “Das Problem ist das Patriarchat” A qualitative Analysis of Framing and Counterframing of Femi(ni)cides in contemporary Germany

According to the Federal Criminal Police Office, 139 women were killed by their (ex-)partner in 2020. That year, Germany was ranked second highest in estimated number of femicide victims in Europe. As most extreme form of gender-based violence, femicide or feminicide designate the gender-specific killing of women, related to the maintenance of hierarchical gender relations. The topic is little dis

Then our research may be for you. Our main focus is on developing advanced therapeutical medical products (ATMPs), such as cell and gene therapy for Parkinson's disease. We are also working to treat one of the most devastating disorders of the human brain: glioblastomas,

Access to Housing for Migrants and Refugees : Testing the Boundaries of International Law

This thesis examines whether international law is sufficiently equipped for a sound conceptualization of migrants’ and refugees’ right to access housing beyond a minimalistic paradigm. Itaims to assess the potential and shortcomings of this right in counteracting the manner in which power is exercised in migration law, policy, and politics to instrumentalize housing against migrants and refugees. "They Are Welcome to Join" - A study on participation in the cooperation between donor and recepient organisations in development work in Kenya

Participation is one of the most important concepts in current development debate, both in theory and practice. It is also a contested topic and it has been argued that despite well expressed intentions, problems that for long have been connected to development are not solved through participation. Despite participation being suggested as the „new development era‟ many development theorists argue

Looking Beyond Variance: The power of Expected Shortfall in crisis-resilient portfolios

The 21st century has been marked by repeated financial crises that have challenged the effectiveness of traditional portfolio management strategies. Events such as the 2008 financial crisis, the Eurozone debt crisis, and the COVID-19 pandemic have exposed the vulnerabilities of conventional models, such as the widely used Markowitz (1952) mean-variance framework. Since this model balances risk and

Local environmental governance: Assessing proactive initiatives in building energy efficiency

Ett exempel är energi- och Local governments are increasingly taking the initiative in environmental governance. But can they make any difference in addressing current environmental challenges, which are becoming more and more global in scope? This PhD thesis explores and analyses the outcomes of proactive initiatives in the field of building energy efficiency, and the governance approaches taken. It addresses outcomes both

Anti-Schmitt - En begreppsanalytisk studie av multituden och det politiska

This study, which can be considered a study in political philosophy, develops the relationship between the two concepts multitude and the political. The aim is here to explore how the two concepts can be understood firstly by themselves, but also when coming together. In modernity, and most clearly in the tradition of the German legal theorist Carl Schmitt, the political was considered to belong t

Life Cycle Assessment of an Office Building Based on Site-Specific Data

Life cycle assessment (LCA) is an established method to assess the various environmental impacts associated with all the stages of a building. The goal of this project was to calculate the environmental releases for a whole office building and investigate the contribution in terms of environmental impact for different parts of the building, as well as the impact from different stages of the life cLife cycle assessment (LCA) is an established method to assess the various environmental impacts associated with all the stages of a building. Quantum Coherence for Light Harvesting

Almost all life on Earth depends on the products of photosynthesis — the biochemical process whereby solar energy is stored as chemical-rich compounds. The energy of captured photons is transferred through a network of pigment-protein complexes towards the reaction center. The reaction center is responsible for trans-membrane charge separation, which generates a proton motive force which drives al
