The Lisbon Treaty (Article 11) recognises the provision on participatory democracy as a democratic principle of the European Union (EU), thus constitutionally legitimising the involvement of civil society in European governance. However, at least three issues relating to the democratic dimension of this practice remain unresolved. First, it is not possible to specify precisely how the participatio

Respiratory complex I of plant mitochondria has to date been investigated with respect to physiological function, biochemical properties and molecular structure. In the respiratory chain complex I is the major entry gate for low potential electrons from matrix NADH, reducing ubiquinone and utilizing the released energy to pump protons across the inner membrane. Plant complex I is active against a

Legal certainty is central to taxation decisions. This article describes the current legal situation and discussions in four Nordic countries. Sweden and Finland are specialized in dealing with taxation cases in administrative courts. In Denmark and Norway, no specialization exists in taxation cases. I maintain in this article that legal certainty would benefit from explicit signals from the state

Quantitative risk analysis (QRA) is a very powerful tool with which the fire protection engineer systematically can analyze fire safety problems. Risk analysis methods have during the last decades become more common for analyzing fire safety problems. This is partly because of the development of fire simulation tools enabling a quantitative estimation of the consequences. The increased use of risk

This paper presents corpus-elicited contrastive data relevant to the interand intralanguage study of cleft constructions. It is shown that even in closely related languages like English and Swedish, the frequency and distribution of different types of cleft constructions vary greatly. Previous approaches to the study of clefts in English have attempted to derive distributional differences between

The results also suggest

Local delivery of amyloid beta oligomers from the tip of a nanopipette, controlled over the cell surface, has been used to deliver physiological picomolar oligomer concentrations to primary astrocytes or neurons. Calcium influx was observed when as few as 2000 oligomers were delivered to the cell surface. When the dosing of oligomers was stopped the intracellular calcium returned to basal levels o

The use of this material under current conditions is supported by existing information. This material was evaluated for genotoxicity, repeated dose toxicity, developmental toxicity, reproductive toxicity, local respiratory toxicity, phototoxicity, skin sensitization, as well as environmental safety. Data show that this material is not genotoxic. Data from the suitable read across analog 2-butyloct

The predominant way of modelling mortality rates is the Lee–Carter model and its many extensions. The Lee–Carter model and its many extensions use a latent process to forecast. These models are estimated using a two-step procedure that causes an inconsistent view on the latent variable. This paper considers identifiability issues of these models from a perspective that acknowledges the latent vari

Ethnic acculturation in a sample of 19-year-old individuals of Yugoslavian and Iranian origin in contemporary Sweden was studied, with a focus on how acculturation is contingent on social structure and social context. Acculturation was measured as orientation to the majority and the parental culture of origin. The results suggest, first, that the two dimensions are weakly but positively correlated
