Coughed droplets, estimating size and speed

When we cough and speak we launch droplets and if the person launching these droplets is sick from some kind of virus disease, such as COVID19, the droplets can contain viruses. These viruses have been found to be one of the main contributors to the spreading of the pandemic disease. If we can further understand where these droplets end up we can make more effective protective measures during a pa

New initiative to raise status of teaching

Teaching is to be as highly valued as research when it comes to appointments and promotions. Despite this ambition, it has rarely worked that way in practice. A recently completed project provides a new framework which will help faculty managements, as well as individual teaching staff members, to evaluate and develop educational qualifications. In the ‘Pedagogisk Meritering’ project, which concer

How we can prevent cheating in assessment

During the pandemic, reports of cheating rose dramatically – by over 100 per cent. The response to this development saw the launch of the pilot project “Förebygga disciplinära förseelser” (Prevent disciplinary offences) which was intended to strengthen the capacity of learning environments to prevent cheating and produce routines and materials for the work going forward. Revealed: Molecular “superpower” of antibiotic-resistant bacteria

A species of ordinary gut bacteria that we all carry flourishes when the intestinal flora is knocked out by a course of antibiotics. Since the bacteria is naturally resistant to many antibiotics, it causes problems, particularly in healthcare settings. A study led from Lund University in Sweden now shows how two molecular mechanisms can work together make the bacterium extra resistant. “Using this

Link between selenium deficiency and heart failure

The risk is twice as high for individuals with low selenium levels. Heart failure is a common condition affecting 250 000 Swedes. In heart failure, the heart cannot pump enough blood into the body, and the disease is associated with a poor prognosis.

Recycling strategies of fungi can affect how forests store carbon

Some fungi are wasteful, while others recycle – and this can determine how much carbon is stored in a forest. Researchers at Lund University have now revealed how fungi manage their mycelium, the network that builds the structure of fungus. The results could provide new insights into the carbon cycle and climate. Researchers have investigated how fungi recycle their mycelium when they grow. Using
